INTRODUCTION
James Jerome Hill Papers:
Letterpress Books, 1877-1916
Born on the Ontario frontier in 1838, James Jerome Hill migrated to St. Paul in
1856 where he embarked upon his remarkable career. Initially, he concerned
himself with the Mississippi steamboat trade and warehousing, later expanding
his operations to help trigger what one biographer has called an "energy revolution in the Northwest," which switched from wood to coal as its principal energy
source.
In 1878 he joined with Norman Kittson of Minnesota and George Stephen and
Donald Smith of the Canadian Pacific Railroad to complete the St. Paul and
Pacific Railroad, which linked Minneapolis-St. Paul with'Winnipeg by rail and
opened the rich Red River Valley of the North for settlement. Allying himself even
more closely with Stephen, Smith, and others of the Canadian Pacific Syndicate, Hill's voice was an important one in the determination to construct that
railroad along its southernly route, close to the United States border where it
could compete effectively with the recently completed Northern Pacific Railway.
Following his "Canadian interlude," Hill constructed his own transcontinental
road, the Great Northern Railway, which linked Minneapolis-St. Paul with Seattle in 1893. By 1901, he had joined with J.P. Morgan and Co., the Rockefeller
interests, and E.H. Harriman, to organize the Northern Securities Company and
consolidate his former rivals, the Northern Pacific and the Chicago, Burlington
and Quincy railroads, with his own Great Northern. Thej largest railroad conglomerate of its day, the Northern Securities Co. quickly drew the attention of
President Theodore Roosevelt and became the target of one of the most
celebrated of the Progressive Era's "trust-busting" cases.
A man of many interests, Hill also ran model experimental farms in Minnesota
to develop superior livestock and crop yields for the settlers locating near his
railroads. He invested heavily in various lumber arid milling enterprises/and he
was a major figure in the development of the mining industries of Minnesota,
Iowa, Montana, and Washington state.
In addition to his activities in western Canada, Hill played a role on the
broader, international stage. After the turn of the century, he unsuccessfully
VII
attempted to tap the fabled Asian markets through the development of his own
steamship lines. That effort failed, but Hill's interest in Asia led him to collect
material useful to historians interested in the Pacific trade. Less well known is his
brief involvement in South America. Drawing on his experience in the development of Minnesota's Iron Range, Hill was, during 1911 -1912, in close contact
with Gaspard Farrer of Baring Brothers and Company of London regarding the
formation of the Brazilian Iron Ore Company, formed to tap that nation's rich
mineral deposits.
Outside of his business interests, Hill assembled a fine collection of Barbizon
School paintings and was an active supporter of cultural events in MinneapolisSt. Paul. When J.P. Morgan, Thomas W. Lamónt, Howard Elliott, George F.
Baker, Robert T; Lincoln, Arthur Curtiss James, and Robert Bacon raised
$125,000 to endow the James J. Hill Professorship of Transportation at the
Harvard Business School in 1915, Hill personally contributed another $125,000
to endow the chair. His philanthropic interests were wide-ranging and included
substantial support for various causes from St. Paul to the Pacific Coast. He
maintained close ties with Archbishop John Ireland and was a major financial
supporter of the St. Paul Theological Seminary, Macalester College, Hamline
University, the University of Washington, and other educational, religious, and
charitable organizations throughout the greater Northwest.
This edited microfilm collection of Hill's most substantive outgoing correspondence, 1877-1916, is drawn from his extensive personal papers, which are an
invaluable source for researchers interested in the history of transportation,
colonization and settlement, immigration, philanthropy, Indian-white relations,
and other subjects of interest to historians concerned with the experience of the
upper Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, the national and international financial
communities, and western Canada.
The letterpress books reproduced for this microfilm edition include Hill's most
significant outgoing correspondence, 1877-1916. They are divided into three
groups, the Personaland Private Series and the Pre-Railroad Business Series
(Series P) and the Railroads Series (Series R), which reflect their original
arrangement in Hill's offices. Topically and chronologically, however, these
series overlap, and all three should be consulted for most subjects.
The Personal and Private Series and the Pre-Railroad Business Series
consist of James J. Hill's outgoing personal and business letters, sent to a wide
variety of prominent individuals and organizations in Minnesota, elsewhere in
the United States, in Canada, and in Europe. This series includes thirty-one
volumes, spanning the years 1877 to Hill's death in 1916, and in addition to the
main series, includes two subseries. The New York and On Line subseries
eonsistsofeightvolumes, 1891-1916, authored primarily by Hill in his New York
office and while traveling. The Marcus Alonzo Hanna subseries consists of four
letters, collected in one volume, which Hill wrote to Hanna (1896-1897), William
VIII
McKinley's campaign manager, concerning the implications of the Republicans' defeat of William Jennings Bryan and the Populists in the 1896 presidential campaign.
Hill is the primary author of letters in this series. Secondary authors include
Charles H. Benedict, Adolphus H. Bode, Charles A. Broadwater, Martin R.
Brown, Hamilton.Browne, Arthur W. Clark, J. Dolby, J.D. Farrell, Reuben B.
Galushaand James J. Hill, WestonHammons, Robert H. Harrison, Louis W. Hill,
James J. Hill and Daniel M. Robbins, William I. Kenna, Charles D. Kerr, Norman
W. Kittson, Norman W. Kittsonand James J. Hill, Darius Miller, Frank L Moffett,
Leslie P. Richardson, William Secombe, George Stephen, William A. Stephens,
Nicholas Terhune, William C. Toomey, Frank E. Ward, and H.B. Willis.
The Railroads Series (Series R) consists of outgoing correspondence,
telegrams, legal documents, and memoranda, generated in official railroad
offices by James J. Hill and others. This series includes thirty-seven volumes,
1877-1898, of the St. Paul and Pacific; the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba;
the Great Northern; and the Canadian Pacific railroad companies. It contains
information regarding the construction and operation of these railroad companies and related matters.
The Railroads Series is divided into two parts, by author. Volumes R-1
through R-21 include correspondence authored almost entirely by James J. Hill
and his secretaries (volume R-21 being the only volume with extensive
correspondence by other authors). Included in this part are four subseries. The
St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway (James J. Hill) subseries includes
fourteen volumes of correspondence authored by James J. Hill, 1879-1890, in
his official capacities as general manager and as president. The Great Northern
Railway (James J. Hill) subseries includes three volumes of correspondence
authored by James J. Hill, 1890-1898, in his official capacity as president. The
St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway: Telegrams (James J. Hill) subseries includes telegrams authored by James J. Hill, 1879-1884. The Canadian
Pacific Railway (James J. Hill and others) subseries includes one volume of
correspondence authored by James J. Hill, Richard B. Angus, and George
Stephen, 1881-1882.
The second part of the Railroad Series consists of volumes R-22 through
R-37, which include correspondence and documents authored almost exclusively by persons other than James J. Hill and which are organized in six
subseries. The St. Paul and Pacific Railroad: General Manager (Jesse P.
Farley) subseries includes two volumes of correspondence authored by Jesse
P. Farley, 1877-1879, in his official capacity as general manager. The St. Paul,
Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway: Executive Committee subseries includes
two volumes of correspondence, minutes, and other documents, 1888-1890.
The principal authors are Henry D. Minot, chairman, and Frank L. Moffett,
secretary. The St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway: Vice President
IX
(Richard B. Angus) subseries includes two volumes of correspondence authored by Richard B. Angus, 1879-1881, in his official capacity as vice.president. The St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway: Vice President (Henry
D. Minot) subseries includes two volumes of correspondence authored by
Henry D. Minot, 1886-1887, in his official capacity as vice president. The St.
Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway: General Manager (Allen Manvel)
subseries includes seven volumes of correspondence authored by Allen
Manvel, 1881 -1887, in his official capacities as assistant general manager and
general manager. The Great Northern Railway (Legal Documents) subseries
includes one volume of legal documents and memoranda, including lists of
stockholders, 1881-1899.
In addition to James J. Hill, authors in series R include John W.N. Abbott;
Charles Anderson; Richard B. Angus; Samuel J. Beals; Elbridge H. Beckler;
Charles H. Benedict; Adolphus H. Bode; Charles A. Broadwater; R.C. Burdick;
Clark, Eller& How; John M. Egan; Jesse P. Farley; William H. Fisher; Reuben B.

D. Miller; Minneapolis Northwestern Railway Company; Henry D. Minot; Frank
L. Moffett; Gen. S. Morison; James C. Morrison; William T. Reed; Leslie P.
Richardson; C.B. Rockwood; William Secombe; Donald A. Smith; George
Stephen; William A. Stephens; William C. Van Horn; I.C. Wade; Frank E. Ward;
Charles A. Warren; and George B. Young.
A number of letters in this microfilm edition remain difficult to read, since the
originals were damaged by water and other agents in the various offices where
the Hill Papers were stored in St. Paul and elsewhere before they were transferred to the James Jerome Hill Reference Library. Retakes have been made of
documents that are at least partially legible in their original form and are included
on supplemental rolls at the end of each series. Documents that are totally
illegible in their original form have not been filmed. Documents included in this
edition originally were reproduced as part of the complete James J. Hill Letterpress Books Project, done by the James Jerome Hill Reference Library in
cooperation with the Minnesota Historical Society. Major funding forthat project
was supplied by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
