2009 FRESNO STATE MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
2009 PREVIEW
DETERMINED DOGS POWER TO WAC
Fresno State’s men’s track and field team is ready
to prove itself in 2009.
“What has amazed me about this group is
their confidence that they can get this done,” said
head coach Scott Winsor. “They have confidence
that they can win the WAC, which is exactly the
attitude we need to have.”
Last season, the Bulldogs saw their hopes of
a conference title dashed in the final events of the
Western Athletic Conference Championships.
“To be fourth in conference last year but
within 10 points tells me that this conference title
is a dogfight.”
And it’s one that these ‘Dogs are ready to
take on.
After a fall of adjusting to the new coaching
staff and the accompanying philosophies, Fresno
State is ready to return to the top.
“We’ll need all facets to step up,” said Winsor.
“And with the way this team has worked to get
ready for the season combined and the talent that
we have, we definitely stand a chance to win it.”
SPRINTS/HURDLES
The Bulldogs list 10 men as sprinters and
hurdlers, making this group the deepest from
which Fresno State can draw.
“This is a really promising group,” said
Winsor. “Particularly in the open 400 and the 400
intermediate hurdles.”
Returning for his junior season is team leader
in both 400 events, Val-Pierre Dai’Re. Dai’Re
took silver in both hurdling events at the WAC
Championships and qualified the events for the
first round of the NCAAs, finishing one spot shy of
an automatic bid in the 400 hurdles. He secured a
place in Fresno State history with a time of 51.02
seconds in the 400 hurdles, the program’s thirdbest time.
“Val is a leader on the team,” said Winsor.
“He gets the team out there, works hard and
pushes the entire team to do the same.”
Also coming off success in the hurdles in the
2008 is Kendrick Young, who joined Dai’Re at the
NCAA Regional in the 400 hurdles. Rounding out
the team’s hurdling contingent will be redshirt
senior Evan Young, the team’s 110 hurdle leader
in 2007.
“Evan and Kendrick will be forces in the
hurdles throughout the season,” said Winsor.
Darryl Miller and Myster Holliman have
proven themselves as hard workers entering the
season.
“Myster has shown himself to be a valuable
asset as a freshman, which is great to see,” said
Winsor. “And Darryl has really come on recently.
He obviously worked very hard over Christmas.’
Winsor emphasizes that every sprinter will
be called on to contribute points to the team.
“These guys are going to be relied upon to
produce for us,” said Winsor. “We have the depth
so they are going to have to be big contributers.”
DISTANCE
2009 PREVIEW
The distance corps will look to build on a
strong showing in cross country this past fall for
the 2009 outdoor season.
“We have a good group of young men that
work very hard and proved themselves to be really
good this fall,” said Winsor. “I’m looking forward to
seeing what they can do on the track.”
Riding an NCAA Championship bid and
Fresno State’s top 10K time in school history is
Erick Garcia. The sophomore found his stride this
fall, leading the team with two individual titles and
two runner-up spots.
Frank Sanders, who put up the WAC’s best
times in the 800 and the 1,500 and won the
conference’s title in the 1,500, will look to repeat
in 2009.
“Frank wants to defend in the worst way,”
said Winsor. “And he puts in the hard work to
prove it.”
New faces will also take the track in the
distance races. Eric Battles proved to be a key
contributor to the cross country team this fall
and has worked to develop himself for the spring.
Transfer Paul Zwama will represent the Bulldogs

in the 10,000, one of the most demanding races
in track.
“This is a group that has shaped up really
well,” said Winsor. “I’m looking forward to seeing
how they do.”
THROWS
With the graduation of three NCAA Regional
qualifiers, the Bulldogs have some rebuilding
ahead of them. But the athletes are ready.
“We’ve had guys really step forward,” said
Winsor. “Two relatively young guys, sophomore
Raul Gonzalez and junior transfer Tim Greene,
have shown great leadership in work ethic.”
Gonzalez had a solid freshman campaign,
developing his skills in the discus and the hammer
throw. Greene, a transfer from Fresno City College
where he competed in all four throwing events, will
be called upon to be a quadruple threat for the
Bulldogs as well. The duo will provide a solid base
for the throwing corps.
Adding depth to the throwing lineup is Justin
Cutler, a record-breaker from Templeton, Calif. The
freshman will toss the shot put and the discus.
“Justin is off to a great start and has the
potential to be great,” said Winsor.
Fresno State struggled in javelin in 2008,
but Winsor says newcomer Peter Krumeich has
shown promise in throwing the medieval lance.
Sophomore James Nenandal threw the javelin for
the first time last season and will look to build on
last year’s momentum.
JUMPS
The jumping corp is poised to have a breakout
spring. With the return of four upperclassmen
in seniors DeAnte Brown, Erik Fossen, Taylor
VAL-PIERRE DAI’RE
2009 PREVIEW
Franzmann, and junior Andrew Pancotti, the
Bulldogs can only improve their jumping position.
Brown, who sat out last season due to injury,
was 2007’s only NCAA Regional double qualifier,
earning bids in both the long and triple jumps.
“DeAnte is a great leader who works hard,”
said Winsor. “We really need him to be a big point
contributor for our team.”
Fossen represented the Bulldogs in both
horizontal jumps as well as the high jump last
season and has improved in all three in the offseason.
“Erik will be looked to score in all three this
year,” said Winsor. “He has made great strides this
year and is more than talented enough to do it.”
Pancotti won the pole vault in 2007 and looks
to reclaim his title in 2009.
“Andrew can win it,” said Winsor. “He is
powerful and explosive, he just needs more vaults
and he will be great.”
Lyle Quillin will likely be a point-getter in the
pole vault as well.
“Taylor can be a huge contributor at the WAC,”
said Winsor. “All the guys have been vaulting from
short approaches on bigger poles which is very
promising.”
2009 FRESNO STATE MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
DECATHLON
Last season freshmen Matt Bushnell and
David Deal stepped up to fill in the gap for the
Bulldogs in the decathlon. The result was positive.
Deal took second at the WAC Championships and
Bushnell was just one place back.
After redshirting last season, Evan Young
returns to make the decathlon a premier event
for Fresno State. The redshirt senior scored the
WAC’s second-most points with 6,659 in 2007
and wants to better that mark.
“These guys will be critical in our ability to
win conference,” said Winsor. “Evan has been
there before, so we will be looking to him to lead by
example.”
Winsor is quick to point out that although
each decathlete has specific strengths, none of
the trio has a glaring weakness.
“Matt can really run, Evan dominates the
throws and hurdles, and David has overall ability,”
said Winsor.
SCHEDULE
The Bulldogs officially take the field on March
7 for the Cal Quadrangular, with meets the ensuing
10 weekends.
“Our schedule demands that we are working
to better ourselves every weekend,” said Winsor.
“Every meet will be important.”
The schedule boasts 10 invitational meets,
including old favorites like the Mt. SAC Relays and
the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, to new additions
like the Arizona State Invitational.
“I can’t point to one meet that is the most
important other than the conference meet,” said
Winsor. “We can’t take a weekend off. We have to
continue to build as we approach conference so we
can peak at the right time.”

2009 FRESNO STATE MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
REVIEW
A SEASON OF RECORDS
The Fresno State men’s track and field team highlighted the 2008
season with 10 qualifications for the NCAA Western Regional in Northridge,
Calif., and finishing fourth in a tight ten-point race at the conference
championship.
Senior Brian Vazquez and freshman Gary Lee got the team off to a
strong start, qualifying for the NCAA Regional at the season’s first meet,
the UC Davis Quadrangular. Vazquez, a thrower, hurled the hammer 195feet, 8-inches (59.63 meters) to win the event and punch a ticket to the
postseason. Lee launched himself 24-1.75 (7.36m) to take first in the long
jump and earn a bid to the Regional.
One week later at Fresno State’s annual dual against Cal Poly, the
Bulldogs continued to make 2008 a year to remember. Lee leapt 24-11.25
(7.60m), breaking the Fresno State freshman record in the long jump and
setting a new Regional-qualifying mark. Outside of the jumping pit, two more
throwers added their names to the NCAA Regional-qualifying list. Senior
Chris Witscher tossed a personal-best 187-4 (57.10m) in the hammer
making him the second Bulldog to qualify in the hammer. Witscher took
second in the event to Vazquez, who bettered his qualifying mark with a throw
of 203-0.25 (61.88m). Oscar Rodriguez earned a postseason bid with his
shot put mark of 54-6.75 (16.63m). Rodriguez would better his qualifying
mark one week later at the USC Invitational, throwing a 56-6 (17.22m). ValPierre Dai’Re also made his mark at the USC Invitational, earning a bid to the
Regional in the 400 hurdles at 52.07.
Competing at Warmerdam for the final time in the 2008 season,
Fresno State put on a great show for the Bulldog fans. Fresno State
finished second in the 20-team field, amassing 165 points. The Bulldogs
took second, third and fourth in the final day’s opening event – the hammer
throw. Vazquez registered a 198-5 (60.48m), taking second to UCLA’s Boldi
Koczor. Rodriguez and Witscher came in third and fourth with tosses of 19010 (58.17m) and 184-8 (56.28m). Rodriguez’s throw qualified him for the
NCAA Regional, making him a double-qualifier – earning bids in both the shot
put and the hammer throw. Lee broke his own freshman record for the long
jump in front of the home crowd. The freshman cleared 25-6.25 (7.78m) to
win the event and move up in the national rankings.
April was a good month on the track for the Bulldogs. At the 50th
Annual Mt. SAC Relays, two Bulldogs doubled-up for the Regional. Dai’Re
Val-Pierre Dai’Re championed the 110m hurdles with a personal-best of
14.24, picking up his second event for the postseason. Frank Sanders hit
two regional qualifying marks with a second-place finish and personal-best of
1:50.08 in the 800. He also won the 1,500 run with another personal best
and regional-qualifying time of 3:50.42. The Brutus Hamilton Invitational
proved to be another successful weekend for Dai’Re, who bettered his
qualifying mark in the 400 hurdles to 51.80.
The 2008 WAC Championships illustrated the best the Bulldogs had
to offer. Fresno State picked up 25 Top 5 finishes, including one individual
champion, and a added a seventh qualifier for the NCAA Regional. Sanders
championed the 1,500 for the Bulldog’s lone individual title. Kendrick Young
earned a bid to the Regional in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best of
52.41. The team landed fourth place, finishing the tight team race behind
Louisiana Tech, Utah State and Boise State. The year’s race for the title was
close with Boise State winning out by seven points. Utah State squeaked
past Louisiana Tech by a half point for second and Fresno State ended up in
fourth, just three points back of bronze.
The Bulldogs had a powerfully balanced showing at the Regional with
three throwers, two hurdlers, a distance runner, and a long jumper. On
the first day, Lee leapt 25-1.25 (7.65m) to place fourth in the long jump
and solidify a trip to the NCAA Championship Meet. The freshman finished
fourth behind three seniors and was less than an inch from bronze. Vazquez
threw a personal-best at the Regional, tossing a 208-6 (63.55m) in the
hammer throw to finish sixth, one place shy of an automatic bid to the NCAA
Championships.
At the 2008 NCAA Championships, Lee took fifth place in the long jump,
granting him All-American honors. Lee, who continued to improve throughout
the season, ended the year on a high note, jumping a 25-7.5 (7.81m) to
finish with a personal-best and U.S. Olympic Trial provisional qualifying mark.
The freshman was the first Bulldog to be named an All-American since Ryan
Beckenhauer in 2001.
The 2008 season marked the end of an era as 28-year Fresno State
Track and Field veteran, Bob Fraley, retired.
