We left Bangkok at 6.00 pm and arrived in Sydney at 6.00 am, finding that Sydney’s time was three hours ahead of Bangkok. The service on the Qantas flight was very good. Australians are proud of their national airline. Our flight path took us over three of Australia’s six states plus the Northern Territory. The other territory (Australian Capital Territory) is where the national capital, Canberra, is located, although for its first twenty-five years Australia’s federal parliament was held in Melbourne. As we flew across the country I was imagining the birds of Australia flying over the tree-tops: the black and white magpie, the laughing kookaburra, the beautiful sounding bell bird and lyre bird… but not the emu which has long legs but cannot fly. I wondered about the animals in the bushland forests beneath us: the hopping kangaroos, the wild dingoes, the koalas and possums in the trees, the platypus swimming in the quiet creeks and the wombats coming out to eat in the dark of night. Australia has such dangerous animals, too. The dangerous snakes include the taipan, tiger snake and brown snake. Spiders too: the deadly funnel web spider and the red-back spider. And, of course, there is the crocodile lurking in the rivers and swamps of the north. When we arrived at Sydney airport we could see the red, white and blue of the Australian flag flying on many buildings. Our friends took us to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House on the shores of Port Jackson, or as it is more commonly known, Sydney Harbour. Our Karen friends told us of their relatives living in Perth and Darwin, while the Karennis in Wollongong also knew of some in Brisbane and Adelaide. There were none that they knew in the Tasmanian cities of Hobart or Burnie. What to do, continued Carefully read the questions below. I cannot think of Sydney without picturing it in my mind. One day I would like to see it and ride a bicycle across it. From news reports I hear that there are occasionally car or truck accidents on the Bridge. These cause major traffic hold-ups with cars being queued for many kilometres on the roads approaching the Bridge. (84 words) Enjoy your assignment! (Remember your check lists!) 3
