I n 2014, I read 200 books! I kept track on Goodreads.com (Facebook for readers). I did not expect to read that much—in fact, my initial reading goal for the year was 120 books. But as I neared that goal about mid-September, I thought to extend my personal challenge and just keep extending until the end of the year just to see how many books I could (or would) read. I surprised myself! My books ran the gamut from short e-book novellas to full length hardcover sci-fi, from paperback to e-books collected on my Kindle. I even re-read at least a dozen of my favorites. So, what do I set for my 2015 reading resolution? I’m leaning towards just trying to match my number for 2014, but mixing it up by reading from a new genre or two and reading a few titles that have been on my to-read list for a few years. However my challenge goes, I know that I am resolved to read, read, read in 2015. What are your reading resolutions? Early-Out Fun on January 21 Tweens: Read outside the lines (secret codes) 2-3 in the Kinne Wing KOOL (K-4th): Watch for details! 2:30-3:30 in the BBPL Meeting Room. Teens: Game Day! Bring your drawing skills! 3:30-4:15 in the Kinne Wing Jots by Julia Julia Humphrey, Children’s Librarian It may cold outside, but it is nice and warm in the library. When it’s too cold to take the little ones outside to play the library makes a great place to escape. Our preschool storytime starts back up on Thursday, January 8. KOOL (for K-4th grades) resumes after school on Tuesday, January 6. The KOOL kids will be chilling out and exploring fun crafts, games, and books this month with Ms. Julia! Stitch ‘n’ Knit Stitch 'n' Knit meets every Friday morning at 10 am in the Kinne Wing. This is the perfect time of year to gather your yarn, your stitching and your holiday projects and come join the group! Bertha’s Robotics Lab, led by Matt Emerson and Dwayne Fournier, will create and command robots that walk and talk using LEGO® MINDSTORMS EV3 (programmable robotics construction sets). This new endeavor will teach participants about science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a fun environment and in a way that feels more like playtime than learning time. The robotics lab will meet in January, for kids 6th grade and up and costs $15, which covers a pizza lunch. Preregistration is required and limited to 12. Please let us know if you are interested and we will contact you with details. If you can think it, our robotics LEGO® lab is the place for you to create and command it! It’s 2015, a year full of nice round numbers, and a chance to start with a fresh new outlook. Each year as we start breaking in new calendars, scheduling our way through the winter, and work through the year, we look back pondering where the previous year disappeared. It’s a frightening concept, as we age, the years disappear quicker, children grow up faster, and our memories lose important information more rapidly. As we try to look ahead into the future, the library board, foundation and library staff look at goals and long-range plans for the use of our library here in Story City and in Gilbert. Our goal is to be the library our communities need, and our communities are made up of the patrons Kolleen Taylor who use the library! There are elements designed for the many different types of library users…. Those who love the programming, others who just read books, those who depend on our audio collections, and those who use our puppets. Those who use our computers are lost without access each week. Some who use our puzzles can’t imagine spending so much money for the wide variety of puzzles they have to choose from, while others just love downloading e-books and audio books from “Overdrive”. Our library serves, and the services vary for everyone.. We hope we provide the services needed most. And as we design programs to lead us into the future, as our Robotics Program is intended, we hope that all who tag along with us will see their futures better for our efforts. 2015 Reading Challenge Pick up your copy of our year—long reading challenge at the Circulation Desk. We are resolved to get you to read, read, read in 2015!
