2016 School Profile
Founded in 1969, The Pine School is an independent, college preparatory, co-educational day
school. The School enrolls 350 students from kindergarten through grade 12 on a 142 acre campus
in Hobe Sound, Florida.
STUDENT POPULATION
There are 149 students in the Upper School, including a senior class of 44. Admission to The Pine School is competitive, based
on a student’s academic record, recommendations, and personal qualifications, as well as an interview and entrance examination.
The School seeks students of all races, religions, nationalities, and economic backgrounds and is committed to nondiscrimination
in its admissions and educational policies, financial aid and loan programs, athletic programs, and all other activities. During the
2016-2017 academic year, the School awarded approximately $1,000,000 in need-based financial aid to 29% of the student body.
ACCREDITATION AND AFFILIATIONS
The Pine School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Florida Council of Independent
Schools, and the Florida Kindergarten Council. The School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools,
the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. TPS
is committed to adhering to the Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
COLLEGE COUNSELING PHILOSOPHY
The Pine School’s comprehensive college counseling process is designed to assess each student’s abilities, interests, needs, and
career goals in order to find the best college match. In addition to helping students academically prepare for higher education,
the Office of College Counseling encourages students to personally reflect on their skills and personalities through such tools
as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. All college applications are carefully considered.

UNIQUE PROGRAMS
ACADEMIC AND TESTING DATA
EVALUATION AND GRADE POINT AVERAGE
The Pine School has a strong academic program and a small senior class, each member of which goes on to a post-secondary
institution. It is our belief that a report of each student’s class rank would be statistically invalid. Consequently, class rankings are
calculated primarily for in-house use and typically are not included on the school transcript.
The GPA is reported on a 4.00 scale, rounded to the nearest hundredth. All academic courses taken in grades 9-12 (as well as
math and world language courses taken in grade 8) are counted in the determination of a student’s grade point average. Fine arts
and elective courses are academic courses required for graduation, so they are also included in the computation of the GPA. All
academic courses are weighted equally, except Advanced Placement courses and those designated as Honors courses by the faculty.
Each Honors course is weighted .5 points, and all Advanced Placement courses are weighted 1.0 point. (The weight is used only to
compute the GPA and does not alter the year-end grade achieved by the student.) Courses taken through the Florida Virtual School
are not calculated in the determination of a student’s GPA.
THE WEIGHTED GPA DISTRIBUTION FOR THE
CLASS OF 2017, COMPUTED AT THE CONCLUSION OF
THE JUNIOR YEAR, IS AS FOLLOWS:

2016 ACT SCORES
The Pine School embraces experiential education and provides its students with off-campus educational opportunities for one week
each year. The experiences are designed to move students out of their comfort zones, developing skills that will aid them for the rest
of their lives. The Class of 2015 has participated in the following trips:
Outdoor Education trip exploring the Florida environment
College Tour - Touring colleges throughout the Mid-Atlantic United States
Outward Bound navigation challenge through the urban jungle of New York City
Adventuring and performing community service in North Carolina
SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT
During senior year, each student at The Pine School must complete a capstone project – a challenging 40 hour field study, service
project, or career exploration activity. During the last week of school, a public symposium is held, and each student presents his or her
work to the community.
PREFECT STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
The Pine School Prefect System is comprised of outstanding juniors and seniors who are nominated or self-nominated and then
selected by a faculty review board. Chosen for their high character, exceptional integrity, leadership within and outside of the classroom,
and commitment to the mission and core values of The Pine School, the Prefects have a passion to see The Pine School live out the
fullness of its potential. With the addition of Deputy Prefects, which is open to rising Junior students, we ensure a smooth transition as
the seniors prepare for graduation as well as offering added leadership opportunities to the Juniors. The Prefects and Deputy Prefects
serve our school community by contributing in every aspect of student life, admissions, campus tours, communications, publicity,
service, environmental life, and the overall quality of student experience that makes The Pine School so unique.
