Glycol in oil standards
Our glycol in oil standards are intended
for use as calibration standards or
reference materials in the determination
of ethylene glycol in engine oil by headspace gas chromatography (GC).
Ethylene glycol is typically mixed with water to
form an engine coolant, but this can leak into the
engine oil. Although glycol contamination of oil
is a fairly uncommon occurrence, it can cause
major engine problems. As with most things, early
detection is the key to avoid such problems.
ASTM Method D7922 is a new standard that was
developed to test for glycols in engine oil, using
gas chromatography. It is a much more effective
method for determining glycol contamination
than previous indirect/direct techniques, such as
Schiff’s reagent method, test kits, acid number,
ICP-OES, and/or FTIR. It is noted that the prior
techniques had a high propensity for false
positives and false negatives.
Using high shear mixing techniques, we have
produced a range of stable standards for
measuring ethylene glycol in engine oil. Our
glycol-in-oil standards (EGOIL) are tested using a
head-space GC analyzer, and they are intended
for use in accordance with ASTM Method D7922.
Ethylene Glycol in Engine Oil Standards are
just the latest addition to our suite of calibration
standards and reference materials for used oil
analysis. To complement your coolant analysis
program, we have developed Karl Fischer titration
standards, a multi-element coolant standard
for ICP, and nitrate & nitrite IC standards. We
offer many other products for used oil analysis,
including standards for measuring acid number,
base number, fuel dilution, and soot content. Our
wear metals standards (V21, V21+K, and V23)
are offered in many concentrations. In addition,
our proficiency testing program includes standards
for the elemental analysis of oils and viscosity
analysis.
