New Bedford – Sullivan’s Ledge
Generates Clean Energy on Superfund Site
The City of New Bedford partnered with SunEdison and BlueWave Capital LLC to successfully redevelop the Sullivan’s Ledge
EPA Superfund Site, once a landfill used for the disposal of hazardous waste, into a host site for a 1.8 MW solar power plant.
With no capital outlay from the city’s budget, the solar installation will provide New Bedford with significant energy savings
of approximately $2.7 Million over the next twenty years through the purchase of solar net metering credits. The City of New
Bedford continues to be a leader in the generation of solar power within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts having now
installed PV systems at 10 sites—including the city’s drinking-water plant, three schools and two reclaimed brownfields.
In addition to creating new, local jobs and transforming contaminated land for clean energy
production, the solar energy plant at Sullivan’s Ledge further supports the City of New Bedford’s long
term clean energy initiative of purchasing 65% of its electricity load from solar powered generation.
The Sullivan’s Ledge solar array adds to the city’s impressive solar PV development strategy that will
save New Bedford taxpayers an estimated $22 million over the lifetime of these projects.
