a big thump last week that derailed the improvement special,
however, only momentarily..
Seems this fellow decided to get
his own engraving plant and. run
gobs of local photos. Just go out
and take pictures like a madman.
Great plans .were made for the
first engravings. The engraver
arrived and, as might be expected, a ground glass window was
broken in transit. Took another
couple of weeks for the new
glass to arrive. It was installed
and once, again this newspaper

The first break in a heat wave that has hung over the area
like a warm blanket since June 14, came Thursday morning.
High clouds and cool air pointed to an easing of the oppressive heat which has set a new all-time record for Presidio County. Even Presidio, often acclaimed as the hottest spot in the nation, came up with a reading that equalled the all-time high set

Reasonable People Use Reasonable Ways
Events got a lot hotter in Marfa Monday
than the thermometer indicated. A goodly number of taxpayers-showed up at the school tax office to "talk" to members of the board of equalization.
One gratifying thought, seeing these people
lined up to discuss valuations with a board of
equalization, was that this is thc democratic
and sensible way to discuss the matter.
Another point, brought out vividly, was
that more people met with the board of equalization Monday than in all the years combined
since the county was organized.
Some people apnroached the board with a
great big chip on their shoulder. Some chips
were knocked off, some just got a little shaky.
However, regardless of the final outcome
of the board's studies and hearings, there'll be
another hearing on July 6, the sensible way Vo
handle tax squabbles is through a board ot
equalisation. Not in the courthouse.
The board went through some mighty rough hours Monday, but from observations, it appears that most cases were handled well and
were handled with understanding by both sides.
True, there were a couple or thick-skulled individuals who wouldn't give in now even if they
were right.
It is unfortunate that it took a county-wide
squabble to get people out to talk with a board
equalization, but it may have awakened taxpayers to the fact that there are certain things that
must be faced and wo can't just rock along as
disinterested parties.
Also, we'd best go on record at this time as
to our statements appearing in print on thc subject. We have never stated, as one individual
jumped us out about Monday, that there were
"only 17 dissatisfied taxpayers in the county."
What we did say was that there were seventeen taxpayers who were carrying this fight to
the courts, but that there were probably many
more who understood the situation and, although dissatisfied with their valuation figure, were
willing to go to a board of equalization.
That there arc many persons dissatisfied
with valuations was evident Monday. And thc
fact has never been disputed. Frankly, we're not
satisfied, but we're not going to slap a bunch of
unfavorable publicity on our school and county
because of a misunderstanding.
And too, it's tough to start paying taxes
when you've ridden the bundwajjon for no many
years without paying a fair share, isn't it?

low as possible. During the time that it takes to completely change to
thb new system-(about three months) you may receive either the
new statement or the old statement with your monthly telephone bill.
Or you may receive BOTH statements .with your bill, with part of
your long distance calls listed on each.

If you've ever just missed a call after running In from outside to
answer the phone, you know how disappointing it is. Most folks can
get to their telephones within a minute, even when they aren't ln the
house. One minute Is about the time it takes for the phone to ring
10 times.
By waiting at least 10 rings beforeyou hang up, you have a much
better chance of getting your call through, especially when the person you're calling Is not hear the phone. In the long run, you'll save
yourself the time and trouble of calling again, and your friends will
certainly appreciate your courtesy and patience. So please remember
