Mission Statement:
“Aggie Pride Parents” is a support group for the parents of UC Davis student-athletes. We exist as a communication
link for a parent-student-university partnership. We will encourage parents to become involved, attend our Aggie Pride
Parents special events, and urge support of the Aggie Sports Fund or any of our 27 individual sports funds. UC Davis
values the parents of our student-athletes and would like to provide a relationship with our parents by offering volunteer
opportunities and parent-to-parent communication.
Dear Aggie Pride Parents,
UC Davis Athletics held our annual Endowment Donor
Appreciation Dinner at the ARC Ballroom on February 3, 2009.
The event began in 1999-2000 as a way to honor and thank
the donors who have established endowments to support UC
Davis student-athletes. The evening’s program also honors the
student-athletes chosen as individuals who best exemplify the
reasons for creating the endowments.
The event provides an opportunity for the student-athlete
recipients to meet our donors and to honor the achievements
of the individual student-athletes. Over 200 donors, recipients,
family members and fans joined us for the dinner this year.
Lindsay Kiyama, Women’s Water Polo, and Dustin Noack,
Wrestling, were the featured speakers representing the thirtyfive recipients for 2008-09. Their speeches exemplify the
time, commitment and dedication that our student-athletes
demonstrate to achieve their goal as UC Davis graduates.

UC DAVIS Athletics Compliance
REPRESENTATIVE OF ATHLETICS INTERESTS (BOOSTERS)
The NCAA identifies a UC Davis “representative of athletics interests” or
“booster” as any individual who:
1. Made any type of contribution to the UC Davis Athletics Department,
TeamAGGIE or individual athletic programs
2. Joined the UC Davis booster club (TeamAGGIE, Aggie Fanatics, Gold
Club, TeamAGGIE Gymnastics) or any sport specific support group
3. Provided NCAA permissible benefits to prospective or enrolled studentathletes or their families
4. Assisted, in any manner, in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes
5. Participated in intercollegiate athletics at UC Davis
6. Is the parent or legal guardian of an enrolled student-athlete
7. Promoted UC Davis Athletics in any manner.
Representatives of athletics interests can
be an individual, an independent agency, a
corporate entity or any other organization.
As a parent, you also are considered a
booster. You will need to understand the
rules and limitations as a booster and as a
parent of a student-athlete who will come
in contact with other UC Davis boosters.
Once identified as a Representative of
Athletics Interests, an individual or
business retains that identity for life.
NCAA rules hold UC Davis responsible
for all actions of its representatives
of athletics interests. A booster’s
involvement with NCAA violations could
jeopardize prospective student-athletes
and current student-athletes’ eligibility
for competition. Sanctions could also be
imposed on the athletics program (e.g.,
loss of scholarships, post-season bans).
If you do become friends with another
UC Davis booster, please remember that
you still are responsible for maintaining
compliance with NCAA rules. In general,
these individuals may not provide benefits
to you or your son and/or daughter. As
mentioned above, parents of studentathletes also are considered boosters.
You are bound to the same regulations
and may not provide benefits to any
student-athlete other than your son and/
or daughter.
EXTRA BENEFITS:
An “extra benefit” is any special
arrangement by an institutional employee
2
or a representative of athletics interests
that provides a student-athlete or the
student-athlete’s relative or friend a benefit
not authorized by the NCAA. The general
rule is if the same benefit is not available
to the institution’s students or their
relatives or friends it is an extra benefit.
Examples of extra benefits include, but are
not limited to:
1. Receiving a meal or drink from a
booster at a restaurant or receiving a
complimentary meal from a restaurant
because of the student-athlete’s affiliation
with UC Davis athletics
2. Complimentary tickets to a professional
sporting event
3. Special discount, payment arrangement
or credit on a purchase or service (e.g.,
green fees at golf course, free legal service)
4. Free or reduced-cost housing (e.g.,
paying mortgage payments, use of
vacation home in Tahoe, staying overnight
at a booster’s home in Davis or on an away
trip)
5. Services (e.g., movie tickets, meals,
lodging, use of a car) from commercial
agencies (e.g., movie theaters, restaurants,
hotels, car dealers) without charge or at
reduced rates
6. Transportation or use of an automobile
7. Cash, gift certificates or other items of
value
8. Purchase of items or services from you
or your relatives at inflated prices
SOME EXCEPTIONS:
OCCASIONAL REFRESHMENTS
Aggie Pride Parents • Spring 2009 • www.ucdavisaggies.com
UC Davis may provide the parents
of a student-athlete with reasonable
refreshments such as soft drinks and
snacks on an occasional basis. This
usually occurs after an athletics event.
OCCASIONAL MEALS
If you want to provide the team an
occasional meal at your home, this is
permissible, however you may only
provide the meal for the student-athletes,
coaches, team managers and trainers. All
parents, friends and relatives of studentathletes must pay you for their meal.
Please note that only a parent or legal
guardian may provide a meal for the team.
Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents,
family friends may not provide a meal
to the team. Additionally, meals must
be on an occasional basis. If a group of
parents want to provide a team meal the
Thursday before every home football game
this would not be permitted. Potlucks
are permissible at any time, provided all
individuals contribute.
VIOLATIONS INVOLVING EXTRA
BENEFITS
Receipt of an extra benefit will result in
UC Davis petitioning to the NCAA to
reinstate the student-athlete’s eligibility for
competition. Additionally, the studentathlete (or relative) receiving the extra
benefit will have to donate the dollar
amount of the benefit to his or her choice
of charity. Documentation is required.

UC DAVIS Athletics Academic Advising
In addition to their leadership in the
classroom and in their sport, our
student-athletes also take an active role
within Intercollegiate Athletics. The
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
(SAAC), a leadership group composed
of representatives from each of our 26
teams, has been working on a variety of
projects this year. Coupled with providing
student-athlete input on NCAA Division
I proposals and serving on campus-wide
committees, 2008-09 SAAC officers Kelsey
Fischer (women’s golf), Grant Hirneise
(baseball), Deanna Menapace (softball),
and Avreeta Singh (volleyball) successfully
organized the first-ever Student-Athlete
Tailgate before the North Dakota football
game as an informal opportunity for
current student-athletes to meet each
other. Teams brought appetizers then
used their expert Division I athletic skills
to compete in a pie eating contest (won by
baseball and wrestling), an egg toss (with
softball posting the win), and a relay race
(with lacrosse taking the championship).
During fall quarter SAAC team reps
also partnered with the campus student
group Athletes in Action to present the
third annual Thanksgiving Dinner for the
Homeless. Our student-athletes cooked
turkeys and other holiday delicacies then
served the food and ate with the homeless
guests from Yolo County who attended the
meal.
the Big West could collect the most money
for their specified charity. Last year UC
Davis student-athletes won the inaugural
Coin Drive—during our first year in the
Big West and Division I—by collecting
more than $1,700 for Sacramento Loaves
& Fishes, an organization serving the
homeless community. By virtue of beating
the other Big West schools, we also
received half of their collected donations.
2007-08 SAAC officers Toki Burke
(men’s swimming), Daniel Elefant (men’s
tennis), Matt Engle (football), Kelsey
Fischer (women’s golf), and Rachel Keener
(volleyball) were thrilled to deliver a check
for $5,006.10 to Loaves & Fishes on
behalf of UC Davis student-athletes. The
effort also set the school record for most
money every raised by UC Davis studentathletes for a single charity. In 2009, the
other Big West schools vowed to topple
UC Davis. SAAC raised $2,481.01 for the
American Cancer Society but ended the
drive in third place behind Pacific and Cal
Poly San Luis Obispo.
SAAC team reps also would like to remind
parents that we continue our ongoing
collection of hotel-sized shampoos and
soaps from both team travel and family
trips. Donations can be dropped off in
Student-Athlete Academic Services, 204
Hickey Gym, year-round. Last year our
student-athletes donated approximately
2000 personal care products to Loaves &
Fishes for use in their shower facilities for
homeless men, women, and children.
And now for a few fun academic facts
about our Aggies:
•Our average team GPA for all men’s
and women’s teams in spring 2008 was
2.96—which tied the school record for the
highest average GPA in one quarter for all
teams combined.
•In spring 2008, a remarkable 63% of our
female student-athletes earned a 3.00+
GPA. This broke the school record for
highest percentage of women with a 3.00+
in a single quarter.
•In spring 2008, the men’s tennis team
earned a 3.31 team GPA and broke the
school record—for the second consecutive
quarter—for the highest quarterly GPA
earned by a men’s team.
AS OF 3/9/09, OUR CURRENT STUDENT-ATHLETES ARE ENROLLED IN:
23 Majors in the College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences
7 Majors in the College of Biological Sciences
9 Majors in the College of Engineering
37 Majors in the College of Letters & Science
1 Majors in Graduate School (master’s program in exercise science)
TOTAL: 76 different undergrad majors & 1 graduate program
From February 1st-28th our SAAC
participated in the second annual Big West
Conference Coin Drive, a month long
contest to see which athletic department in
Tour & Wine Tasting
On Saturday, February 21, 2009, over 50
parents of student-athletes and alumni
attended the tour of the Robert Mondavi
Institute for Wine and Food Science. Our
guide, Dr. Andrew Waterhouse, Viticulture
and Enology Department Chair, gave us
an informative tour of the highlights of the
Institute that recently opened in October
2008. Our audience was very engaged
asking many questions about classes,
graduates, the new winery and how to
get involved in a sensory wine tasting.
We concluded our tour with a wine
tasting provided by the Cal Aggie Alumni
Association Vintage wine collection and
olive oil tasting from the UC Davis Olive
Center.

Saturday but it was well worth the effort.
Look for the announcement of our next
event in the fall.
Most of the parents headed over to our
basketball double header at the Pavilion
where we enjoyed more refreshments
prior to the two games. Sandy Simpson,
Women’s Basketball Coach, and Greg
Warzecka, Director of Athletics, joined
the group along with our many donors,
alumni and friends of Aggie Athletics. All
agreed it was fun to meet parents from
all different sports and enjoy an evening

Coaches letters
Hello Aggie Athletic Parents,
It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to write this article.
Parents are an integral part of a collegiate program. The support
parents provide to programs is invaluable. That support comes in
many forms and means, and often tips the scales on a program’s
level of success. As a coach I have a great opportunity to be
an ambassador for the university to many parents. Through
the recruiting process I have meet hundreds of parents every
year. Through many of the campus events I attend, I have the
opportunity to meet with parents of student-athletes from other
teams as well. Within my own sport, I am blessed to have an incredibly supportive
and dynamic group of parents. Their support of the program, the coaches, the studentathletes and the support staff is a direct factor in the level of success Aggie Gymnastics
has achieved. I would like to thank all those parents that support all of our teams.
Mother’s and Daughters at MPSF
Conference Championships
March 2009
John Lavallee
Head Women’s Gymnastics Coach
To Our Aggie Parents,
The 2008-2009 Women’s Swimming and Diving season was a tremendous success in a variety of ways. The
team finished a strong second at the Big West Conference Championship meet, our 800 Freestyle Relay was
the first relay in school history to win a relay event, Heidi Kucera became a conference champion in the 200
IM and 100 Breaststroke, achieved an NCAA Division I ‘A” cut in the 200 Breaststroke and was awarded
the Big West Conference Female Athlete of the Year. By virtue of her accomplishments, she became the first
female Aggie to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championship meet. Twenty swimmers achieved lifetime
bests, school records were set in five individual and five relay events and eight returning swimmers made it
onto the All-Time Top 10 List.
Team and individual achievements are objective accomplishments and easily will be forgotten in five or ten
years. What remains in the student-athlete’s memory bank are the friendships and experiences they shared throughout their journey
as a student-athlete at UC Davis. A significant part of that journey involves you, the parent.
As the coach of the women’s swim team I honestly can say that without parental support our team would be “un-pampered!” The
Athletic Department does a good job of providing for our student-athletes, however, the little things that our parents provide make a
huge difference in the overall experience. Often times a team’s survival at all day meets, tournaments, invitationals, etc. depends on
parents organizing and setting up the snack tables or bringing box lunches to the competition site because it is more efficient and cost
effective. We have found that by rotating and sharing in the responsibility more parents are happy to chip in and help.
Working as a team, a team of supporters in this case, always brings people closer together and friendships evolve. Assisting as timers,
scorers or cheering in the stands is another fun way to meet new people while helping the team. Home cooked meals hosted by
families after a competition are greatly appreciated by the student-athletes.
Supporting your son or daughter’s team is a great way to connect with the university and be a part of their college experience. AGGIE
Pride Parents is a new program being offered which provides you with an opportunity to learn more about UC Davis and interact
with parents from other sports teams. Research has shown that being a part of a small group within a larger organization contributes
to a positive and meaningful experience and “connects” that person to the organization (university). For the student-athlete, being
a member of an intercollegiate athletic team provides that opportunity. For the athlete’s parent(s), being a member of TeamAggie,
AGGIE Pride Parents or a sport specific booster club provides the same opportunity.
The team and I are forever grateful for the support and love bestowed upon us by our parents during the season. We thank everybody
for “connecting” with us and I encourage every parent to get involved in his or her student-athletes college experience.

Faces in Athletics
Vianney Campos Head Field
Hockey Coach
Stewart Inducted Into ULV Athletics
Hall Of Fame
On November 12, 2008, UC Davis
named Vianney Campos the head
coach of its re-established women’s
field hockey program. The team
will begin competition in 2009 in
the NorPac Conference as UC Davis’
27th NCAA Division I sport. Campos
comes to UC Davis after serving as an
assistant coach at Pacific for the past
two years. Prior to that, she completed a
stellar playing career for the Tigers.
UC Davis head coach Gary Stewart was
inducted into the University of La Verne
Athletics Hall of Fame on March 21. The
former Leopard student-athlete and head
coach was one of six individuals in the
2009 induction class.
Campos assisted in all facets of Pacific’s women’s field hockey
program since joining the staff. She also has served as a
Futures coach for USA Field Hockey since 2007 and served the
organization in a volunteer capacity at its 2007 U-14 Regional
Rumble. In addition, she has a wealth of experience coaching
at various camps for the past four years in some of the strongest
recruiting areas in the nation. Campos also directed the Pacific
Tiger Cub Camp for the past two years.
“Vianney’s knowledge of key recruiting areas within the state
of California and her experience in recruiting academically
and athletically talented students is important to our ability to
successfully restart the women’s field hockey program at UC
Davis,” said Greg Warzecka, Director of Athletics. “Her passion
for the sport is clearly evident, and her philosophical approach
to building a value based, achievement oriented program will
serve her well.”
As a four-year starter at Pacific, Campos helped lead the Tigers
to 39 victories. As a senior, she led the nation in points per game
(3.79) and goals per game (1.68). In all, she posted 32 goals
and tallied 72 points during her final season. Also that year, the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named
Campos first-team All-America. She also was selected to play
in the 2006 NFHCA Senior All-Star game. Her collegiate career
featured three conference offensive player of the year awards as
well as being named to the NorPac First Team All-Conference
Team all four years. Campos was named to the NFHCA All-West
Region Team four times.
“I am extremely thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of
UC Davis and become the field hockey coach for the Aggies,”
said Campos. “I welcome the challenge of starting a program
from the ground up. I will miss my alma mater, but this is a
terrific opportunity and I look forward to developing successful
student-athletes for the Aggies.”
In addition to her Tiger career, Campos has been a member of
the USA National Team Developmental Squad since 2007. She
has traveled with the team to compete in Azerbaijan as well as in
various games against Canada and a team from Japan.

Stewart played four seasons for La Verne
before graduating in 1984. He earned AllSouthern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference distinction all four years and All-District VIII honors
in each of his last three seasons. A three-year team captain,
Stewart finished his career ranked among the Leopards’ top 10
in numerous statistical categories. He captured the SCIAC’s Ted
Ducey Award, bestowed upon one senior who best exemplifies
outstanding achievement in academics, athletics, leadership and
sportsmanship. Additionally, he was the 1984 recipient of the
Anthony P. Scafani Sportsman of the Year Award.
As head coach from 1987-95, Stewart guided La Verne from last
place to first in three years and remains the only coach in La
Verne history to lead his team to a SCIAC title or a berth in the
NCAA Division III Championship. Additionally, he ranks second
all-time at La Verne with 116 wins during his eight-year tenure.
Stewart just completed his sixth season as UC Davis head
coach and 16th overall. He led the Aggies to their first Big West
Conference Tournament in 2008-09.
DOLINSKY, LAVALLEE CLAIM TOP MPSF HONOR
UC Davis senior Andi Dolinsky earned a share of Gymnast
of the Year honors while head coach John Lavallee took
home Coach of the Year distinction as the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation announced its year-end awards in March
2009.
Lavallee has now won Coach of the Year accolades every
year in his three seasons at the Aggie helm. This season,
his team led the MPSF wire-to-wire in both total average
and regional-qualifying score (RQS), while improving on its
previous mark for nine straight weeks with the exception of
an emergency fill-in appearance at Stanford.
