Letter from the Rector
Dear Friends in Christ,
Several days ago, our Holy Father, Pope
Benedict XVI met with the seminarians
of the Diocese of Rome. His address to
the seminarians given at that audience
is always published, and I look forward
each year to reading what our Holy
Father has to say to his seminarians.
There is always guidance to be found
there, both for the men in formation
and for those who form them. Let me
just share an excerpt from this year’s address. Pope Benedict said:
“The formation of the priest, too, requires integrity, completeness, ascetic
exercise, heroic constancy and fidelity in all the aspects that constitute it;
deep down there should be a solid spiritual life animated by an intense
relationship with God on the personal and community level, with
particular care shown in liturgical celebrations and the frequenting of
the Sacraments.”
The Pope’s words stands as a reminder not only to “his”
seminarians, but to all seminarians of the importance of good,
solid formation for those who wish to be of service to God’s
people in priestly ministry. Pope Benedict sets the bar high, as he
should. But, the Holy Father’s words also stand as a reminder for
us, the educators and formators, of the special importance of our
work as well. It is a work which we take seriously and couldn’t do
without you, our benefactors, who support us in so many ways
with your time, treasure, talent, and most especially your prayers
throughout the year. Please know of our tremendous gratitude.
Several weeks ago, we began the second semester with a total of
eighty-four seminarians, the highest enrollment in many years.
Over the Christmas break, two of our seminarians were ordained
to the diaconate by their bishops back in their home dioceses, and
returned here to complete their formation. This April, seventeen
more of their classmates will be ordained to the diaconate by
Bishop Gerald Barbarito, the Bishop of Palm Beach. Due to the
large class, the largest in my seven years here, that ordination will
take place at the parish church next door, St. Thomas More. Then,
beginning in early May, the current deacon class consisting of nine
men who having completed their formation here at St. Vincent de
Paul Seminary will be ordained to the priesthood in celebrations
throughout the state.
The growth in our enrollment is a great blessing and evidence
of the active work of the Holy Spirit throughout the state of
Florida and beyond. Let’s pray that men will continue to respond
generously to the Lord’s call to serve His Church in ordained
ministry, for the men in formation here at St. Vincent, and for
those who form them.

Mission Statement
The primary purpose of St. Vincent de Paul Regional
Seminary is to provide a human, spiritual, academic, and
pastoral formation program to prepare candidates for
the Roman Catholic Priesthood. In response to the large
number of Hispanic Catholics in Florida, and throughout
the United States, the Seminary formation program is
bilingual and multicultural.
The secondary purpose of the Seminary is to provide
continuing theological education to qualified clergy,
religious, and laity of all denominations.
Notice of correction for fall 2011 dialogue
Fr. Jose Alfaro, Vice Rector, Dean of Human Formation
was omitted from the staff/directors listing. The article on
page 10, Seminary Blessed with Several Bequests, in the
first paragraph Joseph Fazzalaro was incorrectly identified
as the son of Eleanor Fazzalaro. He is a relative. In the
third paragraph, the reference Mrs. Fazzalaro should have
been “Ms.” Fazzalaro.

“We are great believers in supporting the formation
of priests, and want to do whatever we can to
help the seminary achieve that goal.”

benjamin & rosemary kriEger – Co-chairs

In addition to being active volunteers at SVdP, the Kriegers,
are members of the seminary’s Legacy Society and Rector’s
Guild, a special group of donors who support the seminary
financially. When asked about their decision to Chair
Friends of the Seminary 2012, Rosemary replied, “We
are honored to be a part of this vital mission to educate
Seminarians who will be Priests and provide spiritual
leadership to God’s people for many years to come.”
Ben and Rosemary Krieger natives of Cincinnati, Ohio, were
married in 1958. These high school sweethearts are proud
parents of three adult children, Greg, Ken & Cathy, and
three grandchildren, Ben, Jenna Rose and Nicholas.
Ben’s career path enabled the Krieger family to live in
many places. When he took a position as the President
and CEO of Ris Paper Company, the family moved to New
York. Subsequently he became Executive Vice President
of Dixon Paper Company in Denver, Colorado, prior to
becoming President of two Distribution Companies of
Mead Corporation in Michigan and Ohio. Rosemary started
her career with banking in Ohio and handled advertising
for Travelhost magazine during their time in Colorado.
Rosemary and Ben have also been recognized for
their inexhaustible charity work. They served as both
Chairpersons and Honorary Chairs of the YMCA
Champions Ball, and received the Rotary Opal Award for
Community Service. In 1997, Rosemary was presented
with the Women of Distinction Award by Soroptomist
International, and in 2010 she received the AVDA Heart of
Woman Award. Other organizations that have been touched
by the Kriegers, include: The March of Dimes, Catholic
Charities, Food for the Poor, the Boca Raton Rotary,
American Heart Association, American Cancer Society,
and Boca Raton Community Hospital, just to name a few.
Their involvement with the Boca Raton Rotary’s College
Scholarship Program led them to mentor and support a
young student from Columbia who is currently attending
Palm Beach State College in Boca Raton.
In 1990 the Kriegers moved to Boca Raton, where Ben
became a partner in White Knight Solutions and Corporate
Development International, while Rosemary opened
a successful Executive Suite business. The powerhouse
couple became very active in the local community in both
volunteer and leadership roles. Ben even went on to serve
as a Boca Raton City Commissioner.
The Kriegers, members of St. Jude Parish in Boca Raton have
been volunteers and supporters of St. Vincent’s for many
years. They were introduced to the seminary by a friend, and
member of the SVdP Development Council, Larry Dahman.
“We were so inspired by the Seminary and the Seminarians
who are the heart of our Catholic Church,” said Rosemary.
“These men are preparing to dedicate themselves to follow
Christ as the Apostles did centuries ago.” Over the past
six years, Ben has served on the Development Council, as
well as the Friends of the Seminary and Joe-Paddy event
committees. Recently, he played a vital role as a member of
the Feasibility Study Committee.
The Kriegers’ volunteerism and advocacy work in
conjunction with the leadership roles they have taken on
in the local community have certainly made a profound
difference in the lives of so many. Rosemary and Ben hold
dear the words of Mother Teresa, “It’s not how much we give
but how much love we put into giving.”
Volunteer Spotlight
Raymond Cuminale
The seminary has found a true friend and volunteer in
Raymond Cuminale. For the past four years, Raymond has
been volunteering his time at St. Vincent’s. He serves as a
member of the Development Council and plays an essential
role on the Friends of the Seminary and Joe-Paddy committees.
In addition to ensuring that our auctions are successful,
he lends his design and decorating expertise to each event.
Whether it’s designing the centerpieces, decorating the auction

and interior design in addition to heading up
a creative marketing company. To add to his
credits, Ray is also a published poet.
In 1996 Raymond relocated to Palm Beach,
seeking new horizons. He joined St. Edwards Church, serving
and singing in the choir for four years. He volunteers his time
to various charities and organizations: The Lord’s Place, Café
Joshua, Humane Society, Save-A-Pet, and serves as a Board
member for Greyhound Pets of America. Raymond serves at
daily mass as the liturgical coordinator at St. Ann. In May 2011,
he graduated from Christian Formation School and has recently
begun his own ministry, “Hand of Faith” with the mission to
end Human Trafficking in our community.
A native New Yorker of Italian descent, Raymond was educated
at the High School of Music & Art, The Fashion Institute of
Technology, NY University and the Kulicke Stark Academy. He

Very special thanks to the following volunteers:
Ben & Rosemary Krieger, Co-Chairs, FOS 2012,
Chris Grant and the Knights of Columbus, Sandy
Lucas, April Murphy, Karen Parker, Bob & Lorie
Clinger and Academy Awards. We also owe
gratitude to our dedicated administration, staff
and students: Msgr. Keith Brennan, Fr. José Alfaro,
all the Seminarians, Keith Parker, Stanton Cadow,
Fr. Michael Flynn, Minnie Garcia, seminarian
Mark Librizzi, Sharon Melancon, Daniella Coy,
Roland Jenkins & the Maintenance Crew, the
Housekeeping Staff, Chef Philippe Pedemey & the
Kitchen Crew.
Please note that the seminary is very conscious of
making the most of every dollar contributed to this
event, and is grateful for the talents and time of our
Chef, kitchen staff and volunteers to provide the
best meal possible. We are blessed to be able to
offer a first class event, atmosphere and ambience
for historically less than 14 cents per dollar raised.
The benefit of having our seminarians act as waiter
staff, in-kind contributions from vendors, and
hosting Friends on campus, is largely responsible
for enabling us to accomplish this. Thank you
again for your support and prayers.

St. Vincent de Paul
History of Friends of the Seminary
“Friends of the Seminary” was originally called Opportunity
Dinner and was conceived in October 1983 by Rector Rev.
Felipe Estévez. The first Opportunity Dinner took place
March 27, 1984, at a cost of $125 per person. This loosely
organized event, changed its name to Friends of the Seminary
in 1990, and at times was a sit down dinner or a reception
with hor’dourves. In the mid 80’s the Donor Brunch & Mass
was created as an offshoot of Friends. Celebrated in early
December each year, its purpose remains a “thank you” event
for all donors.
Friends takes place the evening of the bi-annual Board
of Trustees meeting, providing an opportunity for the
Archbishop and all the Bishops to celebrate with seminary
supporters. In 2004, under the direction of Bill Conroy, the
seminary’s new Director of Development, (the seminary had
no formal development or organized fundraising program
until then) $87,880 was raised. The event’s chair was Larry
Dahman, a member of the newly formed Development
Council, in both 2005 and ’06. At times the event included
singing and music by seminarians and outdoor seating
accommodating over 300 guests. In 2005 a Mardi Gras theme
was adopted, and continued until 2008.
The idea of title sponsors and/or lay honorary chairs was
begun in 2008. Mrs. Catherine R. “Sis” Murphy retained
that title in 2008, followed by Jacques and “Danger”
Vinmont in 2009. A decision was made that year to seat all
attendees indoors, resulting in a reduced number of tickets
available due to space limitations. Roughly 100 fewer guests
were seated, however a record $158,203 was raised under the
leadership of Paul & Lynn Lawless.
Salve Regina
The tradition of a commemorative logo, beads, gift bags,
program ad sales, complementary promotional items,
corporate support, the underwriting of valet parking were
started in 2007 and expanded in ‘08. This allowed the cost
per dollar raised to remain extremely low. In 2010 the lowest
cost ever at 10 cents per dollar raised set a record. In 2008
$206,506 was given under event chairman John Herrick,
a $48,000 gain over the previous year. With the leadership
of Carmel Quinn, chair of the Friends 2009, another new
record was set with over $235,470 contributed. Under Quinn
the theme was changed to best represent the spirit of the
seminary’s mission, ambiance and environment by including
the colors, architecture and elements of the chapel and
campus. By 2010, April Murphy of Boca Raton stepped in to
chair the event during very difficult economic times. Diane
Simowitz served as working chair for Friends 2011, raising
$213,885. Boca Raton Co-Chairs Ben and Rosemary Krieger
are leading the event for 2012. While Friends today is able to
accommodate fewer guests, it is more generously supported
locally and state-wide, and represents a significant total of the
annual fund-raising budget. Since the initial event in 1984,
28 years ago, over $1.5 million has been raised, while the
price per ticket has increased only $50.
Salve, Regina, mater misericordiae

Et Iesum,

O Clemens, o pia, o dulcis

V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.

Hope for the Future!
by then Rev. Mr. Dominic Toan Tran (now Rev. Dominic Toan Tran
at St. Juliana Parish in West Palm Beach)
Last January I was among
ten seminarians, a deacon,
and a priest flying from Fort
Lauderdale International
Airport in Florida to
Washington D.C., in order
to participate in the 38th
Annual March for Life. It
was a bittersweet experience
and a very memorable one
for me this year. Being there
as a member of the clergy, a deacon, was really awesome.
The first great memory that sticks out from the trip was
preceding the march; on Sunday I attended a solemn mass
at the Basilica of the National Shine of the Immaculate
Conception, the largest and most beautiful Catholic Basilica
in the United States of America. Before the mass I joined
with several seminarians in praying at the Chapel of Our
Lady of La Vang and also at the Crypt Church before the
Blessed Sacrament. I was moved to see several bishops,
priests, seminarians, and youth in silent and fervent prayer
before the Blessed Sacrament.
and supporting human dignity and the sanctity for the
right to life. Their presence in the movement to reclaim
the dignity of all human persons is essential and one that
was very much felt at the solemn mass. The importance of
youth, young adults, seminarians, deacons and priests in
attendance was highlighted in the homily given by the main
celebrant, Cardinal DiNardo.
The next morning we attended a youth rally and Mass at
D.C. Armory. There were about twenty thousand attending
and Cardinal DiNardo was the main celebrant. I cannot
describe how deeply moving it was to pray and participate
in Mass with so many young and vibrant Catholics - the
future of the Church.
Finally, there was the March itself. If you are reading this
and have not gone before, please go next year. Seriously, just
go. It is such a witness to the United States of America when
countless people of every age, color and religion can gather
for the common cause of defending the sanctity of life.
So let’s together with one mind and heart praise God and
give Him thanks. So that from east to west we collaborate
with each other and stand up to support and defend the
sanctity and dignity of human life right from the moment
of conception. All in all, as you can probably tell, it was a
profound and heartfelt experience for me, and one that I
wish and hope everyone in the United Stated of America
will one day experience.
The solemn mass began at 6:30 PM on Sunday at the
Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Thousands of
youth, young adults and adults from East to West, North
to South of the United States of America joined with
countless seminarians, deacons and priests, score of bishops
and five cardinals who participated in this Mass. Cardinal
Daniel DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston Houston and
Chairman of the U.S. Bishop’s Committee on Pro-Life
Activities, was the main celebrant. The procession featuring
the seminarians, deacons, priests, bishops and cardinal
took about 45 minutes; it was such an amazing experience.
I recognized that I am just a little piece of the puzzle, but
in seeing myself connecting with all of the other pieces was
astonishing.
Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy!
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
To thee do we cry,
poor banished children of Eve,
to thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning and weeping
in this valley of tears.
Looking out into the eyes of countless people crammed
into the Basilica, I saw intense love and hope for all of us.
Especially seeing all these young people, I could see clearly
that the future is with us and not with the promoters of the
culture of death or self-interest. It was a breathtaking way to
literally see the Body of Christ right in front of my eyes. In
his homily, Cardinal DiNardo spoke of Christ as the “light
that illumines the darkness, the culture of death” and of
the importance of unity among each one of us working to
promote and support the sanctity of life.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us;
and after this our exile
Show unto us the blessed fruit
Of thy womb Jesus;
O clement, O loving, O sweet
Virgin Mary.
It is the countless youth and young adults, the present and
the future of the United States of America, and the Church
in attendance that is most of note. How breathtaking to see
that the current and the future generations are so actively
committed to preserving, standing up for, working for
