OVERVIEW OF PROGRAM OF STUDIES
The program of studies is divided into two sections:
•
•
Language Arts
− General Language Component
− Specific Language Component
Culture
It is important that the sections be implemented in an integrated manner.
Language Arts
The Language Arts section of this program of studies reflects an integrated, interdependent
approach to language learning within a bilingual programming context. Ukrainian language
arts includes a General Language Component and a Specific Language Component.
The Specific Language Component provides the detailed linguistic elements of the
Ukrainian language, descriptors of language competence for each grade, and outcomes to
support sociocultural/sociolinguistic and strategic learning.
The Specific Language Component outlines the linguistic elements that students will need to
be able to use the Ukrainian language, while the General Language Component provides
the context and purpose for using the language, and outlines the knowledge, skills and
attitudes that students are to develop. The two components should be developed
concurrently so that the language being learned is the language that students will need and
be able to apply.
Culture
The Culture section fosters the development of essential knowledge, skills and attitudes
related to self, Ukrainian language and cultures, the community and the world. “Ukrainian
cultures” refers to the cultures of Ukrainian-speaking peoples.
GENERAL OUTCOMES
General outcomes are broad statements that form the basis of this program of studies. Each
general outcome outlines the key learnings that each section of the program is designed to
support. The general outcomes describe the common goals that all students in the Ukrainian
Language Arts Kindergarten to Grade 9 learning sequence are expected to achieve.
Ukrainian bilingual programming is designed to promote all-round personal development by
fostering social, emotional, moral, intellectual and creative growth. To support this growth and
development, the Ukrainian Language Arts Kindergarten to Grade 9 program is built upon the
following seven general outcomes.

This video series offers numerous strategies and activities that teachers can use when teaching second languages.
The narrations and discussions are in English while the demonstrations are in various languages. The strategies can
be adapted to other second language teaching activities.
The resource offers a close examination of assessment in second language high school classrooms. Three case
studies feature second language teachers using various assessment methods; e.g., the Integrated Performance
Assessment Model, Performance Tasks and Backward Design. Each case study follows a teacher as she works
through the process, from setting clear goals, giving directions and modelling, to giving immediate and helpful
feedback to students on their performance.
Interviews with district assessment leaders and teachers convey the importance of identifying learning outcomes,
designing engaging activities and providing specific and timely feedback to students. All are essential in building
language proficiency in second language classrooms.
Demonstrations of teaching, learning and the assessment process are conducted in French, Spanish or English.
Activities are student-centred and assessment-driven but are also interesting and fun. Comments from students reflect
the success of these three case studies. They share how the teaching and learning activities motivated them to
practise and improve throughout the course.
Titles authorized in this series are Assessment Strategies, Communicating about Sports, Daily Routines, Exploring
New Directions, Food Facts and Stories, Fruits of the Americas, Happy New Year!, Hearing Authentic Voices,
Holidays and Seasons, Promoting Attractions of Japan, Routes to Culture, Sports in Action, Sports Stats and US and
Italian Homes.

This video series offers numerous strategies and activities that teachers can use when teaching second languages.
The narrations and discussions are in English while the demonstrations are in various languages. The strategies can
be adapted to other second language teaching activities.
Communicating about Sports presents ideas and strategies, in Chinese, that teachers can use when teaching sportsrelated material to a class of Grade 6 second language students. Students work on various activities to practise using
sports vocabulary; e.g., using a Venn diagram to compare what sports Chinese and Americans enjoy playing,
interviewing a classmate about his or her sport-related likes and dislikes, role-playing. Students also practise writing
Chinese characters in class, as homework and in an ongoing activity where they compose and send a letter to a pen
pal in China.
In this resource, a teacher demonstrates her understanding of learner outcomes and how she incorporates them in
her lessons. She uses total physical response (TPR) to involve students in acting out and saying sports vocabulary.
She uses facial expressions and gestures to help students understand the terms. Small-group and large-group
activities allow students opportunities to work with one or more of their classmates. Students comment on the
importance of engaging activities that encouraged them to learn and practise the language.

This video series offers numerous strategies and activities that teachers can use when teaching second languages.
The narrations and discussions are in English while the demonstrations are in various languages. The strategies can
be adapted to other second language teaching activities.
In this resource, a teacher walks the viewer through a typical lesson with a Grade 5 Japanese class. The video is
useful to any teacher instructing in a second language classroom. It provides practical ideas and strategies, e.g., Total
Physical Response (TPR), modeling, paired practice and student-led charades, for vocabulary instruction.
In the video, students engage in activities; e.g., creating a personal daily routine, using filmstrip boxes. The routine is
then shared with a partner who presents the daily routine to the class. In another activity, a Venn diagram is used to
compare Japanese and American culture. The video makes reference to language applications and cultural
comparisons that coincide with curricular objectives found in the language and culture programs of study.
Student perspectives, on the benefits of learning a second language, are also provided.

This resource demonstrates the teaching of Chinese in a multilevel class (Levels 2, 3 and 4), using a theme-based
approach. In the video, the teacher leads students in an exploration of directions, both literally and metaphorically.
First, Level 2 and 3 students work in small groups to learn how to get to a Chinese restaurant. They use simple maps
they have created to facilitate questions and answers, including finding directions and providing descriptions of
neighbourhood buildings and services.
At the same time, Level 4 students in the class practise reciting two poems from the Chinese literature curriculum. The
video shows how these students interact with each other in their discussions about various interpretations of the
poems.
Student groups at each level demonstrate their product and the teacher provides constructive comments.

This video series offers numerous strategies and activities that teachers can use when teaching second languages.

This video shows a second-year Japanese classroom in a senior high school. The video focuses on the importance of
being an active learner and incorporating a student-centred approach to learning a second language. The teacher
acts as a facilitator and guides students through their learning about the Japanese language and culture by engaging
them in a common topic; i.e., celebrating New Year's Day in Japan.
The teacher engages students in active learning and accommodates different learning styles by creating a learning
environment in which the class is divided into two groups. One group focuses on reading and writing about activities
that happen in Japan on New Year's Day; e.g., special foods and exchanging gifts (money). The second group
participates in authentic New Year's Day activities; e.g., singing songs, making cards and playing games. Both groups
then switch activities. At the end of the video, the instructor gives students an opportunity to articulate what they have
learned, in English, to assess their understanding of concepts learned during the lesson.
The video also offers a cross-cultural analysis of how New Year's Day is celebrated in different cultures around the
world.
This resource supports many of the curricular objectives found in the language and culture programs of study and has
a good instructional design.
Titles authorized in this series are Assessment Strategies, Communicating about Sports, Daily Routines, Exploring

Comments:
• The context of the film takes place at a senior high school level; however, the methodology of teaching a second
language and the suggested activities can be implemented at any grade.

This video depicts a grade 3 and 4 German classroom where the teacher does not have a homeroom. She
demonstrates a creative way to use teaching materials that allows her to have all materials on a cart. The lesson
presented on the video combines the topics of seasons and holidays, e.g., Fasching, Halloween, to reinforce basic
reading skills, build cultural knowledge and introduce more abstract thinking. The teacher begins and concludes the
lesson by having students sing theme-related songs to establish the learning environment and to reinforce their
learning. During the lesson, she uses visuals, e.g., student-made month and season clocks, sentence strips, a Venn
diagram, to engage students in the active learning of German. She groups students in a circle or in pairs to allow them
to participate and practise German in meaningful ways.

level in an elementary language development series. The readers, a series of seven books containing 28 stories, are
highly illustrated with blackline drawings and are designed to reinforce and use vocabulary learned in other
components of the Nova series. The Echo-Acting Routines consist of 13 units that allow students to learn both
language and the skills of sequencing and processing. The Dialogues consist of 13 units of dialogues to help
students develop oral language within contexts meaningful to them. The Gameboards consist of 26 laminated
12"x18" gameboards that allow students to match words with their corresponding pictures. A variety of themes are
covered, including foods, family, activities and Christmas. An answer key is included. The five posters and instruction
booklet that comprise the large calendar-format Poetry and Rebus Readings are designed to reinforce other
components of the Nova series. The Song Book contains the words and actions for 55 songs and is divided into 13
units that act as a companion to the Dialogues and the Echo-Acting Routines. All songs are featured on the
audiocassettes and audio CD. They are designed to enrich vocabulary, cultural knowledge and experience through
music. The Teacher’s Unit Preparation Book contains additional materials and techniques required for the preparation
of daily lesson plans. Practical teaching tips and recommended supplementary resources are included, as well as

Dialogues. They are well illustrated and provide students with activities to help them recall the dialogue, test their
comprehension, learn the Ukrainian alphabet, and develop vocabulary and writing skills.

This is a resource based on thematic dialogues. It is a multifaceted approach to language learning that has
components that involve music, reading materials, oral dialogues, rebus readings, games, etc. The seven readers are
suitable for students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 (depending on the students’ ability). The Echo-acting Routines help to
develop sequencing and processing skills within a Ukrainian language environment. Each of the 13 units contains a
teacher’s text, several 8.5”x11” illustrations and a set of sentence strips. The Dialogues consist of 13 units of
dialogues to help students develop oral language with contexts meaningful to them. The Poetry and Rebus Readings
include 26 attractively illustrated posters that present poetry and rebus readings used to develop the themes,
vocabulary and concepts taught in the 13 Nova 3 units. The posters provide an attractive Ukrainian print environment,
and the poetry introduces students to authentic Ukrainian literature. The Song Book includes song texts, teaching
instructions, accompanying activities, and illustrations for 50 songs featured on the Nova 3 songbook cassettes. It is
designed to enrich vocabulary, cultural knowledge and experience through music and is to be used in conjunction with
the Nova 3 dialogues and echo-acting routines. The Teacher’s Unit Preparation Book brings together the diverse
range of Nova components so that teachers can use them most effectively. It provides techniques, tips and
organizational tools to help teachers get the most from their students. The resource includes 13 unit sections, giving
teachers easy access to the information needed to deliver the units developed in Nova 3. A comprehensive set of
appendices includes student activity copymasters, planning forms and instruction on how to incorporate all the Nova
components.

This video series offers numerous strategies and activities that teachers can use when teaching second languages.
The narrations and discussions are in English while the demonstrations are in various languages. The strategies can
be adapted to other second language teaching activities.
This video shows an advanced-level Japanese classroom in a senior high school setting. The video reinforces the
importance of providing students with a purpose when learning in a second language classroom. It also addresses the
importance of actively engaging students to make their learning meaningful and enjoyable.
The instructor assesses students’ ability to use the Japanese language and to learn about Japanese culture by
engaging them in a unit of study that focuses on Japan as a tourist attraction. Students are asked to first identify a
geographical region in Japan and landmarks found in that region. They then play a game related to the geographical
areas and their landmarks. Students are also asked to reflect on what they like about a particular region, in written
form. They then connect the information and create a travel brochure to promote Japan. The culminating activity is the
creation of a promotional video that promotes travel in Japan.
The instructor reinforces proficiency in the language by practising vocabulary and sentence structure through
interactive activities that engage students. Students are given the opportunity to reflect upon the importance of
learning a second language in short clips during the video.
This resource addresses many of the curricular outcomes in the language and culture programs of study. This
resource shows how making learning meaningful and enjoyable is beneficial for the student.
Comments:
• The context of the film takes place at a senior high school level; however, the methodology of teaching a second
language and the suggested activities can be implemented in grades 4 through 12.

This video presents instructional strategies to teaching German at the high school level. Students are guided through
graduated activities, including a total physical response (TPR) vocabulary review of the body and a grammar segment
on the verb gefallen (Eng. please). A listening component is incorporated in the lesson where students listen to
statements related to sports. They are asked to listen and draw the message. This allows students to focus on
listening comprehension.
The teacher uses total physical response storytelling (TPRS) to have students act out a story while she reads it. A
student retells the story while his or her classmates act it out again. The students are then asked to write the story
individually and share what they have written. The teacher writes the stories on the blackboard. This allows students
to see the words in written form and self-check their own spelling.
The teacher uses a list of sports events and the number of medals that Germany received in the 2002 Winter
Olympics to introduce sports vocabulary. To conclude the lesson, and as a homework assignment, students are asked
to create their own story, using the sports vocabulary

This video presents various strategies to teach German in a Grade 5 class where students have been studying
German for four years. As the teacher does not have a homeroom, she uses all school facilities; e.g., the library and
the gymnasium. In the demonstrations, she combines German language activities with mathematics concepts. Using
sports as the theme, she models “like to play” and “do not like to play”. Students use these sentence segments to
complete a chart independently and share their work with the class. The teacher models how to ask the class whether
they like certain familiar sports. She invites students to be the surveyors and count and tally the results of this query,
in German.
The teacher uses copies of German sports magazines to encourage students to identify and interpret favourite sports
played by young people in Germany. Using sample sentences, students work in pairs to describe, in complete
sentences, the clothing worn by athletes; e.g., colours and types of clothing.
As a homework assignment, students are asked to write a letter to the teacher stating their hobbies or sports they like
and do not like. This activity provides students with an opportunity to bring together what they have learned and
produce a written text.

This video series offers numerous strategies and activities that teachers can use when teaching second languages.
The narrations and discussions are in English while the demonstrations are in various languages. The strategies can
be adapted to other second language teaching activities.
This 28-minute video provides sample teaching practices that support Alberta’s language and culture programs. The
video depicts a lesson that compares Italian and American homes. The class learns new vocabulary words and
practises them during a line dance and card game. As a homework assignment, students compose letters describing
their home that they will e-mail to students in Italy.
Although the video is presented in the target language, there are English subtitles and narration that provide effective
teaching practices for a second language teacher.
Titles authorized in this series are Assessment Strategies, Communicating about Sports, Daily Routine, Exploring
New Directions, Food Facts and Stories, Fruits of the Americas, Happy New Year!, Hearing Authentic Voices,
Holidays and Seasons, Promoting Attractions of Japan, Routes to Culture, Sports in Action, Sports Stats and US and

This “high-interest, low-vocabulary” novel is designed for the adolescent, reluctant reader. It can be used as oral
literature, for novel study, or for independent reading at the senior high school level. In this story, Jim refuses Dan’s
advice not to run away from home; Dan reluctantly accompanies Jim on his many adventures. A farmer finally
provides the boys with moral support and valuable advice.
