Unit 2 Math Study Guide
Test Date: _____________
-know place value: be able to identify place values and based on clues figure out
given numbers for missing values  know 1/10 is one place value smaller or bigger,
10 times less is one place value smaller, and 10 times more is one place value larger.
Examples:
-estimates: given two numbers, be able to round them to “easy whole numbers” to
multiply and divide and realize that this is an estimate that your actual answer
should be close to
Ex. 196 * 25  200 * 30 = 6,000
-notation: be able to know and write standard notation, expanded notation,
exponential notation, and the products of 10 to represent the number
*Standard notation: most common way of representing a number
Three hundred fifty six  356
*Expanded notation: writing a number as the sum of the value of each digits
2,345  2,000 + 300 + 40 + 5
*Exponential notation: represent repeated multiplication by the same factor
5 * 5 * 5 * 5  54
-High Number Toss: know that when you play high number toss, you pull cards
from a deck of cards to create the largest numbers possible. Remember the
exponent tells you how many zeroes to add to the number. The person who creates
the largest number is the winner.
Ex. Tony got: 345 * 103 = 345,000
John got: 256 * 104 = 2, 560, 000 (WINNER!!)
-conversions: covert pounds to ounces (1 pound = 16 ounces)
1 pd = 16 oz
2 pd = 32 oz
3 pd = 48 oz
-write an expression with grouping symbols: given a number story, write an
expression to match the problem
Ex.
-create mathematical model, showing your work, and explain what to do with
the remainder
-be able to estimate and multiply using U.S. traditional multiplication
-be able to estimate and divide using partial quotients or U.S. traditional
division
