Palm Beach State College Foundation Scholarships (3/18/15)

Palm Beach State College Foundation Scholarships (3/18/15)
The door to higher education is open to students attending Palm Beach State College. The Foundation’s
goal is to help students overcome this obstacle through its scholarship program. Generous individuals,
businesses, foundations and organizations in the community have made donations to benefit students in
many programs. Below is a listing of the annual and endowed named scholarships.
To be considered for Fall/Spring Term Scholarships, The on-line scholarship process enables the
Foundation to utilize a general scholarship application which allows the student to apply for all
the Foundation scholarships with a single completed application.
In order to qualify for a Foundation Scholarship, the student must be completing their first AA, AS, AAS,
ATC, ATD, CCC or PSAV degree. The Foundation has some scholarship funding available to students in
the Bachelor’s Programs.
Foundation Scholarship applications are available prior to the start of Fall Term and through the drop/add
period. The majority of scholarships are awarded for the Fall/Spring Terms. If funding is available, we
will open the application for the Summer Term.
By completing the scholarship application, you will be considered for all the scholarships for which you
qualify for based on the donor critieria. Students are only awarded one foundation scholarship per term.
The Foundation Scholarship website is updated periodically with notices regarding upcoming scholarship
opportunities and interim status reports of scholarship awarding.
Please keep in mind that it is the donor that establishes the scholarship criteria. The majority of
foundation scholarships require students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
(FAFSA) and have financial need. We recommend that students complete a FAFSA online at FAFSA on
the Web.

Helen Bokas Darcey Endowed Scholarship
With our father, we established this endowment to honor our mother, Helen Darcey, commemorating her
commitment to teaching and affection for this university. An instructor in the Communications
Department, her main specialty was teaching reading. Although reading is an ability most take for
granted, imagine tackling your college courses without a command of this basic skill! For years, Mom
encouraged students and taught them tools to improve proficiency. Consider the benefits:
comprehension makes books more enjoyable, builds confidence and expands life's opportunities.
Mom's style, grace and pretty smile made her a favorite. One colleague told us "When I first got to know
Helen, she made me feel like a special friend. Later, I realized she made everyone feel that way." Mom's
success was evident: One year, she was voted to serve as a representative to the national "Teacher of
the Year" convention. She kept a box of cards, drawings and trinkets from grateful students. We got a
kick when, years after her 1995 retirement, people continued to stop her to say, "Remember me, Mrs.
Darcey?" and "You really helped me". This is her proud legacy. Thanks, Mom.
