 Action Verbs 
Monday  Verbs and Action Verbs
A verb shows what the subject of a sentence does or
did.
An action verb expresses action.
It tells what subject does or did.
I want a sled for my birthday.
The children ride their sleds.
The ranger tells us to stop sledding.
Some common action verbs are ride, walk, play,
want, get, and take.
Action verbs that are commonly misused include
lie/lay, sit/set, rise/raise.
Monday Practice
Name the subject and the action verb.
1. Bill speaks two languages: English and Chinese.
2. She reads two books every week.
3. That teacher never gives tests on Fridays.
4. I like vanilla ice cream better than chocolate.
5. Every morning we buy a newspaper at the coffee
shop.
6. He wants a basketball for his birthday.
7. Sometimes they sit on benches in the park.
8. Do you raise your hand often?
9. My mom sometimes lies down in the afternoon.
10. I smell something bad.
Tuesday  Subject-Verb Agreement
A verb must agree with its subject
A singular subject takes a singular verb.
A plural subject takes a plural verb.
Add –s or –es to most verbs in the present tense if the
subject is singular.
If the subject is plural, the verb must be plural. Do not
add –s to it.
Tuesday Practice
Put the subject and action verb in the correct space.
Make sure the subject and verb are in agreement.
1. I always (dance, dances) at a party.
2. We usually (work, works) until seven o’clock.
3. He (sing, sings) beautifully.
4. Emily (score, scores) in almost every game, a goal.
5. They never (deliver, delivers) the pizza I order!
6. That dress (look, looks) really nice.
7. My little brother (feel, feels) bad if he doesn’t win.
8. We always (drink, drinks) a lot of water during
basketball practice.
Wednesday Mechanics and Usage:
Subject-Verb Agreement
A verb must agree with its subject.
A singular subject takes a singular verb.
Henry goes to the park every day.
A plural subject takes a plural verb.
The students go to the park every day.
Both simple and compound sentences should have
correct subject-verb agreement.
Henry walks home.
Henry walks home, but his sisters ride the bus.
Wednesday Practice
Practice: Change the verb so it matches the subject.
1. She often (buy, buys) flowers for her grandmother.
We (buy, buys) books every time we go to the mall.
2. My friends usually (play, plays) baseball after school.
Tom’s sister (play, plays) the trombone.
3. Ruth and I sometimes (argue, argues) about what
movie to see.
Simon with his brother (argue, argues) all the time.
4. Some birds (fly, flies) south for the winter.
My uncle (fly, flies) a jet for the airline.
Thursday Practice
Name the action verb.
Then choose the subject that agrees with the verb.
1. (We/She) buy all our groceries at the corner store.
2. (My friends/Frank) almost never misses a football
game on TV.
3. (He/You) sometimes miss the bus.
4. (Jill and I/She) like camping in the summer.
5. (Mom and dad/A dog) never bites the hand that feeds
it.
6. During their vacation, (they/he )usually fly to Mexico.
7. Our (parents/coach) drives the bus to the games.
8. (We/A gardener) plant a flower garden every April.
9. Their (team/players) wins the most games every year.
Friday Practice
Fill in the correct action verb to complete the story.
The first one has been done for you.
Every summer my family visits (visit/visits) my
grandparents for a week.
They (live/lives) in a cabin on a lake.
My parents (sleep/sleeps) late to catch up on their rest.
But my little brother and I always (get/gets) up early.
He (like/likes) to go fishing with Grandpa just as the sun
(rise/raises) up.
I (prefer/prefers) swimming, even though the water is
very cold.
Sometimes Grandma (join/joins) me, and we (lie/lay) out
on the raft.
The cold (make/makes) our teeth (chatter/chatters).
But it really (wake/wakes) us up!
After that we might swim all day until the sun (sits/sets)
onthe horizon.
