answer some of those questions. For ease in accessing, just
follow the link.
Benefits Open Enrollment Starts Oct. 25
•
•
Benefit-eligible associates may enroll in 2017 Ascension benefits
from Oct. 25 – Nov. 8.
Associates can begin to prepare for open enrollment:
− Watch a 90-second video to prepare for benefits open
enrollment.
− Consider any changes in your family such as marriage; additions
to your family since last year; did your spouse get a new job or
increase/decrease hours; are any of these changes expected in
the coming year.
− Consider if your current healthcare, disability, and life insurance
coverages will continue to meet your needs or if it’s time to
make changes.
− Review your healthcare expenses by looking at 2016 claims and
health account balances and consider what expenses there
could be in 2017.
− Evaluate other plans available like a spouse’s employer’s
benefits.
Simple tips to safeguard against Phishing emails
•
•
Additional communication about
benefit enrollment and where to
find information about Ascension’s
medical, dental, vision, disability, life
insurance, and legal plan benefits
will be shared in the coming weeks.
Watch for email reminders as well as
information on our intranet sites
and in coming issues of our regional
e-newsletter.
Everyone is responsible for information security and data protection so there is ongoing
education to remind associates that falling for a phishing email could jeopardize our
patient’s data and lead to a data breach. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when
accessing and reviewing your email:
1. If you see a link in an email, an alarm should go off in your head!
2. If you are considering clicking on a link in an email, study the email closely looking for
anything suspicious.
3. If you are unsure, never click on a link in an email. Find a different way to access the
information. When in doubt, don’t click on a link!
4. Always treat user ids/passwords like credit card or social security numbers.
5. You are just as vulnerable to phishing attempts when you use personal email accounts at home.
Corporate Responsibility Corner
Have you ever picked up a stack of papers from a shared copy machine and handed
them all to a patient without looking through them first? This is one of the most
common HIPAA violations. It may be an unintentional breach, but it still is reportable
to the patient and the Office of Civil Rights.

St. Mary’s hosts first Brain Aneurysm/AVM/ Hemorrhagic Stroke Support Group in the Area.
The Brain Aneurysm, AVM Support Group will hold its first meeting on Thursday, Oct. 20, and will meet the third
Thursday of each month from 6 to 8 pm. The meetings will be located in the Health Education Center at St. Mary’s of
Michigan main campus. Meetings are free and open to the public.
The purpose of the support group, which is hosted by a former patient and survivor in conjunction with the Joe Niekro
Foundation, is designed to bring individuals together to share stories and offer support. Social support is important in
the recovery process because social isolation is considered to be a risk factor after having a Brain Aneurysm, AVM, or
Hemorrhagic Stroke.

New sleep surfaces are being installed
Tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 30, a total of 188 new mattresses are slated to be delivered and begin installation. This is a huge
collaboration and team effort consisting of nursing aids, TriMedx associates, transporters, EVS and Hill-Rom
representatives along with other key staff.
During the installation process, bed frames will be cleaned and brand new linens will be placed on the beds. The beds
with the new mattresses will be moved from the staging “work room” to a patient room, and nursing will provide the
transition for patient movement.
This update is all thanks to the HCAHPS survey pointing to patients’ dissatisfaction with our sleep surfaces. We are proud
to improve these sleep surfaces and increase patient satisfaction.

St. Joseph Health System
Recognitions
And the 2016 Lighthouse Award winners are…
St. Joseph Health System (SJHS) proudly recognized Stephanie Lichota and Rachel Kaiser as the 2016 first quarter
Lighthouse Award winners and Becky Morand, its second quarter winner. The trio was recently honored at a Lighthouse
Luncheon held at St. Joseph Hospital.
Stephanie and Rachel, both Orthopedic Techs at St. Joseph’s Bone & Joint Center, were nominated by associate, Sue
Geer. After hearing that a patient who was scheduled
for surgery at St. Mary’s of Michigan could not find
transportation to Saginaw, Stephanie and Rachel,
without reservation, declared, "we can do it!” They
not only drove the patient to Saginaw but waited
until the surgery was complete and she had
recovered before bringing her home.
“I am so proud of these two associates for
recognizing the need and acting in accordance with
our Mission, Vision, and Values. We have so many
wonderful associates that are dedicated to helping
people in every aspect of care. It is truly amazing,”
said Sue.
Becky, an RN and discharge planner, was nominated
by Chi Smedley, Risk Coordinator. On discharge, a

because of insurance coverage issues. Becky went
above and beyond her job duties and went to St.
Vincent De Paul’s and purchased a walker with her own funds and got it back in time to educate the patient on its
use before he left the hospital.
“Becky demonstrates our values every day, but this act really pointed out how very lucky we are to have her as part
of our SJHS family,” remarked Chi.
