I hope our students were able to enjoy some relaxation and family activities during this time away. After a few false starts, spring is finally here. While we love the weather, the spring fever phenomenon often plays havoc on teenagers’ ability to maintain their focus on their academic responsibilities. However, the reality is that the final quarter of the school year has several high stakes touch points. There are multiple internal and external exams during the fourth quarter. All of them are important, and it is necessary that students maintain their focus and do their best. Students will be participating in one or more types of exams (see below) in this final quarter. In addition to preparing for exams, students need to focus on their grades. While strong grades should be a priority for every student, the second semester of students’ junior year is critically significant. Colleges and universities scrutinize the junior year’s second-semester grades on many levels: If a student has a relatively low GPA, is there an upward trend? If a student has a strong academic record, has the student maintained his/her academic excellence? Has the student performed well in challenging classes? Etc. Seniors also have a crucial interest in their final, high-school transcript and must not make the mistake of thinking their college and university acceptances are a sure thing. Seniors who lose focus during their final quarter of high school and fail to maintain the grades that got them accepted in the first place, risk having their scholarships withdrawn, and, in some cases, universities have been known to withdraw students’ admission to the institution of their choice. Seniors, don’t let this happen to you! Stay on top of your assignments right to the very end of the school year. Students will likely have more work to do at home this quarter as they prepare for their tests, complete projects, write papers, and prepare for course finals. Parents, you can help students remain focused by making sure your student is keeping on top of assignments, regularly logging on to PowerSchool and class Haiku pages, and encouraging your student to take advantage of Office Hours. School isn’t over until the last day of school. Parents, please help us maintain this mantra until school is truly over. Finally, Herron High School recently received a School Counseling grant from the Lilly Foundation. The purpose of the grant is to allow schools to undertake a deep data dive into the effectiveness of their school counseling program to identify its strengths and weaknesses. We know that our counseling program is the best it’s ever been since we were able to add a fourth counselor this year. This grant will allow us to identify ways we can make it even better. In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out to all of our students, families and stakeholders with an important, online survey. Please watch for additional information when we release the survey. We hope all of our families will engage in this important upcoming effort. Students will be asked to complete a survey during advisory or during seminar. Federal law requires that we notify parents/guardians of their right to opt their student out of the survey. To that end, we have included our Notification of Rights Under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) statement at the end of this newsletter. Please take a few minutes to review the information. If you have any questions about participation in the survey or wish to opt out you student, please contact Counselor/Advisor Shelby Blasingame at [email protected]. Indiana extending financial aid filing deadline to April 15, Families have one more chance to file FAFSA for college financial aid. Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers announced today that the state’s March 10th financial aid filing deadline would be extended to April 15th this year in response to recent issues with a federal data retrieval tool that complicated the process for families attempting to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). “This is an excellent opportunity for Hoosiers who missed last Friday’s deadline to complete the FAFSA and qualify for financial aid that makes college more affordable,” Lubbers said. “All prospective college students—whether they’re a high school Summer is coming….
