ROUND 10 – July 13 2014

The
MAG
ROUND 10 – July 13th 2014
Belgrave vs Yarra Glen
Emerald vs Yarra Glen
President’s
REPORT
Welcome to everyone from the Yarra Glen and Emerald JFCs.
With the end of the season now in sight this is when planning begins for next year. Details
of our strategy meeting held yesterday will be available shortly. Thank you to those who
attended the meeting, we are excited for our future. It takes people and time for these
things to come to fruition so please don’t hesitate to approach the committee if you think
you can help.
Shortly we will be setting a date for our Presentation Day / AGM so keep an eye out for that
one. It’s a great day for the kids with entertainment. The players all receive a trophy for
their hard efforts throughout the year. As we will be holding our AGM on the same day, this
is when elect our committee positions for next season and all positions are made vacant.
Soon, we will also be asking for applications for coaches for next year. We will advertise for
under 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s. I know we were unable to field an under 16s this season but
we are already working on that and have already been told by a few kids that they plan on
returning to Belgrave next year to play under 16s.
Congratulations to our 2 ‘Milestoners’ this week. Kodi De Pace joins his brothers in
reaching 100 games for the BJFC and William Beggs achieves his 50th. Thanks boys for your
loyalty and commitment to the Club.
Don’t forget our AusKick program which we run here on Fridays evenings at 5:30. Our
numbers are very strong with both boys and girls, so tell your friends about it and
encourage some more kids down here to “Have a Go!” as we hope to field an Under 9 team
next year.
Finally, remember we have a BBQ on this evening from 5.30pm. There is the U16 game
on so stick around and enjoy the day and evening.
GO BELLY !
Paul Armstrong.

Under 10 Coach REPORT
Round 8
Our home game against Gembrook-Cockatoo was played in perfect
conditions. The glorious sunshine was matched only by the effort
displayed by all the boys throughout the entire game.
The theme of the day was all about “being quick” – quick to run to a
contest, quick to help out a team mate, and quick to move the ball
when in possession. Minute by minute, quarter by quarter the boys
kept at it – and while just falling short on the scoreboard, their efforts
symbolised just how far they have come in a little over half a season.

Round 9
In terms of playing conditions, the round 9 away game against Monbulk
couldn’t have been more different from the week before. We knew it
was going to be a slog given the U9’s had called their game off only half
an hour earlier. It’s fair to say the enjoyment level for the kids was low,
but with true grit and determination they took to the field and played
out the entire game without having anyone on the bench to rotate
with. A big thanks to all the parents who helped the kids get through
such trying conditions, in particular Dan Walsh who ran buckets of hot
water out on the ground to help avoid frostbite!
Congratulations to the round 9 match day award winners:
Cameo Theatre Award – Mackay Bateson
Mountain View Hairdresser Award – Mo Handley-Hughes
Pizza Lovers Award - Cameron Baker
Slurpee Coaches Award – Rylan Armstrong
With a well-earned school holiday break under their belt, we look
forward to the players coming back re-energised (warmer and dryer)
and getting stuck into the second half of the season with the same
gusto and positive attitude they’ve displayed to date.

Welcome to Round 10 Belgrave and Yarra Glen,
The last two games for Belgrave have been against tough opposition,
Gembrook-Cockatoo and Monbulk, both top 4 teams. You can rest
assured that all of your support staff and parents have been very
proud of your effort as you have not allowed these teams to score
too freely. It was also great to see these two teams happily sharing
players or match our low numbers to make it a fair contest. Today,
we are up against another formidable opponent, with Yarra Glen
sitting in second position but I’m sure you will all give it your all and
give them a run for their money.
Stick to our structures and play your role, which is the best you can
do and I look forward to seeing another great effort today. Believe in
your abilities and back yourself, remember, together as a team we
are stronger.
“One player can be a crucial ingredient on a team but one player
cannot make a team”.
Our new players are starting to find their straps and I predict great
things for this team in the near future. Keep up the good work team!

Round 8 was played in beautiful sunshine at Belgrave and the
‘combine’ team held their own for much of the game until the 3rd
quarter when Gembrook’s Top 4 quality took its toll. To their credit,
the boys, with a few injuries, still provided stiff competition against a
team with a lot of height.
By contrast, our Olinda home game in Round 9 was played in the
coldest and wettest conditions of the season. Dennis was home sick
for the day and Barry instructed the team in wet weather footy. The
team started in sizzling style and had 4 goals on the board in the first
quarter with goal sneak Aiden Ardley snagging 2. In the 2nd quarter
though, Woori responded well and fed the ball back overhead to a
loose man at half – forward who gave them a lot of run. They fought
back so that scores were almost even at half time.
The third term was a good old fashioned tussle with each side
defending desperately in the rain. Jordie Miller loved the conditions
and was on the bottom of every pack. With Hunter absent (enjoying
sunny Queensland) Ely really stood up and played a great game. Kodi
got on top in the ruck and Darcy and Angus Browne never stopped
running.
Woori kept attacking but Crouchy was a strong defender, repelling
many attacks with desperation and long clearing kicks despite the
sodden ball. With a minute to go Woori goaled and there was a
‘point the diff’. Stout defence pushed the ball wide and the last
minute was a good example of the fierce pressure we have wanted
all year. As the mist descended making it hard to see more than 50
metres, the siren sounded giving us a 1 point win!

Overall it was a great team effort and, with Hunter missing, it was
pleasing that we were able to find other avenues to goal. It will give
the players a lot a self-belief for the rest of the season.

Codes of
CONDUCT
FOR PLAYERS:
1) Play by the rules of the game and the rules set down by the DRJFL, your club and coach.
2) Never argue with an official, never question officials and umpires’ judgement and never question their
honesty.
3) Control your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other players is not accepted.
4) Work equally hard for yourself and your team.
5) Never ridicule players for mistakes. Your goal is to play for enjoyment and winning is only part of it. Be a
good sport, applaud all good plays whether they be from your team, your opponent or the other team.
6) Treat ALL players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of
another player.
7) Co-operate with your coach and team mates, and respect the ability of your opponents.
8) Place in proper perspective the isolated incidents of unsporting behaviour rather than make such
incidents the “highlight” of the game.
9) Players must not assault or attempt to assault an umpire, another player, officials or spectators.
10) Be proud to walk off the ground after each game knowing that you have given your best effort and
never involve yourself in an argument with opposing players, umpires or officials.
FOR PARENTS:
1) If children are interested, encourage them. However if a child is not willing, do not force him or her.
2) Focus on the child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the game.
3) Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory.
4) Encourage children to always participate according to the rules.
5) Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game.
6) Remember that children are involved in organised sport for THEIR enjoyment, not yours.
7) Remember that children learn best from example. Applaud good plays by all teams.
8) If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels (via your child’s club
which then can bring it to the attention of the ruling body) rather than question the official’s judgement
and honesty in public.
9) Remember, most officials give their time and effort for your child’s involvement.
10) Support efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities
11) Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give up their time and resources to
provide recreational activities and deserve your support.
