Why You Should Join the Newspaper Club — by
Casandra Bratton & Talayeh Cunningham —5th
grade, Ms. Dee’s Class
Are you in the third, fourth or
fifth grade? Do you love to
write articles, poems and stories? Would you like to get
involved in an exciting after
school club that will also help
you to become a fantastic
writer? Then you should join
the Shacklette Newspaper
Club.
The first reason why you
should join is because the
club is so enjoyable. As a
club member you get to
choose what type of article
you get to write about which
makes it fun. You have the
freedom to choose fun things
to write about without having
your teacher tell you that you
have to write about something
you do not like.
Another reason that you should be
in the newspaper club is because
you will meet new friends. You will
get to know students in different
grades throughout the school. Doing this helps you to also learn how
to communicate better with the new
friends you are getting to know in
the club.
Finally, you should join because the
club teaches you how to become a
better writer. You will learn how to
choose a topic, write about that
topic and how to correctly write para

graphs, use capitalization and punctuation. If you are in the fifth grade,
the newspaper club is great because
it helps you to improve your ondemand writing skills so that you can
try to score a proficient or distinguished on your KPREP test.
So if any of these above reasons interest you, then go see Ms. White in
Room 209. Our meetings are every
Wednesday after school in the library
from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. We would
love to have you as a member. Come
ready to work hard, be engaged and
to have tons of fun.
This is the first year for the newspaper
club. The name of our newspaper is The
Shark Street Journal. It will come out the
second Thursday of each month.

My Big Birthday Chicago Surprise
by Emory W hite—3rd grade, Mrs. Patel’s class
“I just can’t
wait to get on
that Southwest
plane and get
those delicious
and salty airplane peanuts.” This is what I
was thinking about all day in
Mrs. Patel’s class on Friday,
August 29, 2014. I was so excited because I love to travel
and my aunt was taking me to
Chicago, Illinois for an early
birthday trip. My birthday is
September 14.
The plane was so much fun. I
got to vlog on the IPad while
we were in the air. A vlog is
short for a video blog. A vlog
is when you tape yourself and
tell people what you are doing.
My vlog was about how I
couldn’t wait to get to Chicago.
Our hotel was the Hilton
Palmer in downtown Chicago.
When I walked in that room I
fainted. This was the best hotel room I had ever stayed in.
The room was so awesome. It
had two bathrooms, a mirror
closet, a great view of Chicago and nice room service.
The room looked amazing.
The next day, we got up early to
start our fun trip in Chicago.
We rode the city bus to go to
the Shedd Aquarium. I love visiting aquariums and was excited
to go to this one. However, I
was disappointed when we got
there and found out that we
couldn’t go in. The aquarium
had a two hour wait. So we
went across the street to visit
the Field Museum.
After visiting all of the cool exhibits like the Ancient Egypt and
the Ice Age movie, we left and
walked back to the hotel. We
went to rest at the hotel before
we were going to the big kids
event. But I found out that we
were not going to a big kids
event at all.
I was so happy that I could not wait
to get to the stadium to hear One
Direction sing. I was glad that they
sung all of my favorite songs like
That’s What Makes You Beautiful
and The Story of My Life. I also
got some fantastic souvenirs from
the concert such as a shirt, wristband and water bottle.
The One Direction concert was
one of the best birthday presents I
ever got. I had an amazing time. I
will never forget my big birthday
Chicago surprise.
Emory at the One Direction
concert in Chicago, Illinois
My aunt pulled out two pieces
of paper and told me to read
them. She had tricked me. On
the two pieces of paper were
concert tickets to see one of my
favorite bands, One Direction!
That was my big birthday surprise. I was so excited after I
read the tickets that I fainted on
the floor again.

Awesome Tips For Looking Fun and Fashionable In Your
School Uniform by Taylor Borum - 3rd grade, Mrs. Patel’s Class
Hey, did you know that you
can make your school uniform
look fun and fashionable?
Well, you can. I love to look
fun and fashionable in my uniform. I am going to give you
some awesome tips so you
can too.
A picture of some
fun and fashionable
boots that girls can
wear with their
uniform.
Girls, it is so easy to make
your uniforms look fun and
fashionable. You can wear
colorful hair bows and headbands in your hair. You can
wear different hairstyles like a
bun or a side ponytail. You can
also wear cool jewelry like
rainbow bracelets, earrings,
and necklaces.
Boys, you can look fun and
fashionable too. You can
wear a clean red, black, or
white uniform shirt. If you
want, you can wear a tie with
your uniform shirt. You can
also have your hair in different styles like a short cut,
braids, or curly style.
Both girls and boys can
make their uniforms fun and
fashionable with some cool
shoes. You can put on some
nice tennis shoes with designs on them or some cool
boots. Girls, you can get the
boots with glitter on them.
Those kind of boots are very
cool.
I hope you like my fashion tips.
They will make you look fun
and fashionable. When you
look good you will have a good
day at school.

A Monster Movie You Should See —by Gariyon Croomes, 5th
grade, Mrs. Bohnert’s class
Have you seen the movie Monsters University? If not, then
you should. It is a really good
movie.
Monsters University is a Disney
movie. It is about how two monsters, Mike Wasoski and James
P. Sullivan became friends. The
character James has a nickname. It is Sulley.
At first, Mike and Sulley were
not friends. However, they became friends after studying together while they were in college. They became friends because they found out that they
were more alike than they were
different.
I also like some other characters in
the movie. They are Scott Squishy,
Scribbles, and Ms. Squibbles. All of
them are very interesting characters.
They all make the movie very funny.
I laughed the whole time.
All of the characters, Mike, Sulley,
Squishy, and Scribbles remind me of
kids I know. They also have some of
the same problems that kids have
today. One problem they had in the
movie was thinking that the way they
looked was why people did or did not
like them.
I think you should really watch the
movie Monsters University. It is 1
hour and 44 minutes long. I like the
movie and I think you will too.

Shacklette’s School Wide “ Name Our
Newspaper” Voting by Catherine Chen – 3rd
grade Mrs. Patel’s Class, Hayden Pollock – 4th
grade Mrs. Allison’s Class & Nia Polk – 5th
grade Ms. Dee’s Class
On October 24, 2014, the
whole school voted to name
our new school newspaper.
The newspaper club worked
very hard to come up with a
list of names for everyone to
vote on. It took us weeks to
get the information out to the
school for the school wide
Name Our Newspaper day.
In one of our club meetings,
we worked in teams to brainstorm a list of names for the
school to vote on. We came
up with about 28 names. So to
make it reasonable, we narrowed it down to 4 names that
appeared on the student ballot. A ballot is a piece of paper used to cast a vote. The
names that were on the ballot
were The Shark Street Journal, The Shark Times, The
Shacklette Shark Times and
The Shacklette Shark Journal.
in the city election. She became a family
court judge.
In another meeting, we made
posters telling students when
the voting was and what names
they were voting for. We put the
posters up all around the
school. The members of the
newspaper club made some
very nice posters.
On voting day, students were very excited. Some of the newspaper club members went around with Ms. White to
every grade so that students could vote.
Students voted wisely for the name that
they thought was the best for our newspaper. The name that won of course
was The Shark Street Journal. Thanks
everyone for voting.
We also had a school-wide voting informational telecast on
Friday, October 10, 2014. Attorney Denise Brown was our special guest. She came to talk to
us about why voting is important and why we should take it
seriously. She was very nice
and enjoyed talking with the
students at Shacklette. On November 4, Mrs. Brown also won
