5.8B The Sun and Water Cycle Student Expectation Clark 2016

5.8B The Sun and Water Cycle Student Expectation
Clark 2016-2017
The student is expected to explain how the Sun and the ocean interact in the water cycle.
Essential Questions that students will be asked





5.8 Overarching Question – What effect does energy and matter have in the larger environment?
5.8A Main Questions- How does solar energy affect the processes of the water cycle?
What are the different components of the water cycle?
How does the Sun move water in the water cycle from the oceans?
How does the Sun affect weather patterns that move water and form precipitation?
Key Concepts that need to be understood to answer essential questions



The Sun provides the energy that evaporates water on Earth.
While evaporation can be used to separate solutions, water that evaporates from the ocean does not
contain salt.
Much of the water cycle begins when the Sun’s energy evaporates water from oceans, which collectively
cover approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface.
1/10- HW On-line Pre-Assessment 5.8B The Sun and Water Cycle

Reading- Under the Sea
Writing- WRITE about the ocean and the Sun and their roles in the water cycle. What happens to saltwater
during the water cycle? When ocean water evaporates, what happens to the minerals it contains, such as salt?
Do you think evaporation takes place mostly at night or during the day? Why?

5.8B The Sun and Water Cycle Student Expectation
Clark 2016-2017
Read The Sun and Water Cycle in the STEMscopedia page 71-76. Then chose and
complete one of the following activity
Options A- RFQs
Option B- Web Surfing and Stretch Activity
Reading Focus Questions- Complete all 7 of the base questions and at least 3 paired
questions for a total of 10. Use complete and supported sentences to answer the questions.
Use PPL to identify were in the reading you found the answers. You may also do the stretch
activity.
1) How does the Sun move water in the water cycle?
2) What is the water cycle?
Draw a diagram and label the parts of the water cycle
You may use image on page 75 to help
3) Explain the process of evaporation. Once evaporated where does the
water vapor move to?
4) Explain the process of condensation. What does this process form in
the atmosphere?
5) Where are all the places that water can be found on Earth?
6) What affect does the water cycle have on living (biotic) organism found
in the environment?
7) What affect does the water cycle have on non-living (abiotic) parts of an
environment?
Paired QuestionsA How do you interact with the water cycle every day?
B How does the amount of sunlight affect the water cycle? Does more evaporation
take place at night or during the day? Why?
C How does air temperature affect the precipitation stage of the water cycle?
D Describe why we can’t see water vapor but can see a cloud
E If a water droplet in the atmosphere gets to large what happens? What force
causes this?
F How does the amount of thermal energy in the atmosphere effect precipitation?
Option B) After reading the unit complete the questions with the help of the
websites listed in the Web Surfing Assignment.
Stretch Questions- Complete the Connecting with your Child on page 76
