Chaplin Family Records
Another Robert Chaplin, was born in the west county of Somerset. He and his wife Rebecca (nee
Greedy) settled as assisted immigrants in South Australia. Here is their story and the generations
that followed them;
Robert Chaplin1,2 was born July 30, 1803 in Brompton Ralph, Somerset, England3 and died October
12, 1890 in West Mitcham, South Australia. He died aged 87 years,4,5 and was buried at West
Mitcham Primitive Methodist Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.
Robert’s life-time occupation seems to have been as an agricultural labourer.
He married Rebecca Greedy August 28, 1825 in St. Andrew’s Church of England, Wiveliscombe,
Somerset, England, Register number 268, and was witnessed by John Hill and William Milton. They
were married by banns (which meant their intention to marry was made public in church on three
successive Sundays, so that anyone could then raise an objection if they thought it appropriate.
Marriage by license required a large payment but ensured privacy and was quicker.)
Rebecca Greedy was born and Christened on January 20, 1805 in Langford Budville, Somerset,
England 6. She died October 23, 1885 in West Mitcham, South Australia, aged 79 years.7 She is
buried at West Mitcham Primitive Methodist Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia. The Headstone
reads: “Wife of Robert."
She was the daughter of James Greedy and Susannah Harvey.
Residences: Robert and Rebecca resided in Wiveliscombe in their early life, but with marriage in
1828 moved to Loamy, then in 1830 Woodend, in 1833 Woodhouse, 1835 Stone Wood, until settling
somewhat from 1838-1847 at Burton Court, in Brompton Ralph, Somerset.

Religion: While Methodist at the time of their deaths, their marriage and the baptisms of their
children are listed in the Church of England, Parish Registers, at Wiveliscombe and Brompton Ralph.
In South Australia the family where known members of the Primitive Methodist Church at West
Mitcham.
This non-conformist church community built the famous South Australian landmark “Carclew”. On
21 October 1850 Jonathan Roberts sold one acre out of section 7559, Hundred of Munno Para (GRO
memorial book no. 26, page 327) and in 1855 (the year Robert and Rebecca arrived in the colony) a
Primitive Methodist Chapel was erected thereon, becoming known as "Carclew". Its fourth
anniversary is reported in the Register, 19 March 1859, page 2h: “The fourth anniversary of the
Primitive Methodist Chapel was held on 13 March 1859... On the 14th March there was a public tea
which was gratuitously provided by the ladies of the congregation following which was a public
meeting in respect of the finances of the chapel... “
A further chapel was erected on the site and opened in 1870 – (Register, 21 June 1870, page 5e).
Mr Roberts was born in Cornwall at Perranarworthal, near Penryn and about three miles north of
that town is the "seat" of Carclew. (See Bartholomew's Gazetteer). An Education Board report shows
the school opening in 1856;
the Observer of 9 August 1856, page 1d (supp.) reports on examinations while the Government
Gazette of 26 April 1860 records the Gawler River School as being conducted in the Carclew Chapel.

The name derives from the Old English crucgleu - cruc (or crug) - "burial ground" and cleu - "an
enclosure".
Emigration: Robert and his wife Rebecca and seven of their children, emigrated on the assisted
passage scheme promoted by the South Australia Company, on December 5, 1854 aboard the ship
"Lady MacDonald".

19th century SA shipping records are divided into specific periods which correspond to the
emigration schemes available at the time.
1. 1836 to 1840: The early years-large numbers of British emigrants respond to a widespread
advertising program and apply for free passage. 11,518 labourers and their families who applied for
free passage. Individuals over the age of fifteen were deemed adults and although they may have
travelled with their parents, they were considered applicants in their own right and are entered into
the register by name.
2. June 1841 to 1845: Government assisted emigration suspended due to lack of funds
3. 1847 to 1886: Various assisted emigration schemes offered by the government according to the
labour requirements of the colony. 749 vessels which brought assisted emigrants to the Colony in
the period 1836 to 1886 and for which some record of some passengers survive.

Notes on James Chaplin
Emmigration on Utopia 1858
The Utopia is no exception to other late arrivals from England in having made a long passage, which
is accounted for by adverse weather, commencing in the Irish Channel, where she beat about for 14
days without making any considerable progress. The parallel of the Cape was reached in 71 days,
and from the Cape to the Leuwin a good run of 18 days was traversed but since that period easterly
weather retarded her progress, and for the last 18 days of the trip she was within three days sail of
her port of destination. She was seen from the beach station on Thursday at midday, but did not
reach the anchorage until Friday morning, when she was boarded. Register 10/7/1858

The Utopia is no exception to other late arrivals from England in having made a long passage, which
is accounted for by adverse weather, commencing in the Irish Channel, where she beat about for 14
days without making any considerable progress. The parallel of the Cape was reached in 71 days,
and from the Cape to the Leuwin a good run of 18 days was traversed but since that period easterly
weather retarded her progress, and for the last 18 days of the trip she was within three days sail of
her port of destination. She was seen from the beach station on Thursday at midday, but did not
reach the anchorage until Friday morning, when she was boarded. Register 10/7/1858

He married a second time to Elizabeth Rebecca Read, only two years later and is recorded as a
widower. Presumably Hansani died within two years. Such a young age to be married in those days
and in the registry office. Perhaps they were eloping or she may have been pregnant?

It is quite possible that George Maxwell Chaplin lied about his age in order to enter the military
effort against Japan. His BDM record (Digger SA) is for 1922, but his military record has 1919. 1922
would mean that he was only 17 yoa, whereas 1919 makes him 19 yoa and legally enlistable.
Sections of military record to do with 3 court martials use the inverted name Maxwell George.
However it is not very likely that they are separate individuals given that they were both born at
Hamley Bridge and only 2 years apart. Furthermore both names have military records from the same
period.
