Summer Reading - English III Welcome to English III! This summer we will read Lord of the Flies, a novel by William Golding. In this allegorical tale, a group of students attempt to maintain social order after a crash landing on a deserted island, and must reckon with the “beast” of human nature. Basic Guidelines and Expectations ❖ You may obtain this book in print or electronic copy. ❖ You must have access to this book for at least the first 1-2 weeks of the school year, so don’t just borrow it from the library and return it before the fall. Your Assignment In English II you focused on the concept of identity, and this issue reappears in Lord of the Flies. Many of the novel’s characters see their identity shift in dramatic and unsettling ways, and these transformations prompt the reader to reconsider even the most basic element of identity: what does it mean to be human? Here’s the assignment: ❖ As you read, please highlight, underline, or otherwise annotate spots in the novel that deal with the theme of human nature and/or identity. You should mark at least one spot in every chapter--the more you note, the better you will remember the book when we discuss it in September. ❖ Select one page from the novel that you think is worth discussing in close detail. Above and Beyond (Optional) ❖ Watch The Dark Knight, the second film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. It shares many themes with Lord of the Flies.
