May 2017 Newsletter From the Principal Dear Parents, This week we have commemorated ANZAC Day. We held a school service on Monday afternoon and participated in the town commemorations through the march and service held at the War Memorial. Thank you to our students and staff that participated in these services and represented the College so well. Thank you in particular to our student leaders who had public roles to fulfil both at school and in the town service. ANZAC Day is an excellent opportunity to teach children some great character lessons. It’s hard for us to imagine war, living through war, or being on the battlefield. Our lives are so blessed with peace and comfort that we often don’t appreciate it as much as we should. Our ANZAC’s demonstrate courage, sacrifice, selflessness, and mateship, qualities which we need today in peacetime as much as in wartime. At ANZAC time I can’t help but reflect on The Lord Jesus who embodied these characteristics. Romans 5 vs 6 – 10 tells us “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!” I’d like to thank Mrs Di Alderton who has resigned after serving in the College for over 15 years. Di was not only a parent of the College but served as a Teacher Aide in support of special needs students, to whom she provided love, patience and help to enable these students to access learning. I know Di will be missed and we wish Di God’s richest blessing for her future. Congratulations to Judson House on winning the Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday and to all competitors that participated. Congratulations also go to Miss McGrath who was married during the holidays to Mr Jarred Pethybridge. We wish Mr and Mrs Pethybridge the very best as they start their married life together. God bless, Stephen Wilson Principal Character & Culture College Values Have you ever heard someone say; “he/she is a person of principle”. I watched the movie “Gallipoli” with some of my children on the eve of ANZAC Day. The end of the movie is about the “Battle of the Nek”. A battle between Australian Jeromy Wainwright Light horsemen and Turkish soldiers. Australian troops were required to jump out of the safety of their trenches and charge the Turkish lines. The plan was to send 4 waves of soldiers 2 minutes apart to attack the enemy. The first 2 lines of Australian soldiers were shot down before they made 45 yards across the open battle ground. Despite the massive casualties, the 3rd wave of light horsemen were also sent to attack the enemies – they also suffered the same fate. So why would the men in the 2nd and 3rd line charge at the Turkish lines when they knew they were running to certain death? Major Thomas Redford of the 8th Light horse Regiment said “not a man in the second line stayed in his trench”. I believe the ANZAC soldiers charged because they were men of principle. Practically they would have been far better off if they had disobeyed their orders and stayed in the safety of their trench. But their belief in values like honour, mateship and sacrifice were values worth dying for. Values can be defined as principles or standards of behaviour that help you determine what is important in life. Without values guiding us in life, we are like a boat that is tossed about in the sea. The waves are like society’s influence on our thoughts and opinions. Values help us to stay on course despite the changes in opinions and beliefs by those around us. At Dalby Christian College we want to teach our young people to grow up to be men and women of Principle. People who stand up for values like Truth, Integrity, Diligence, Courage, Faith, Love and Honour. In the movie Gallipoli, before the major sends the 3rd line of ANZACS to charge out of the trenches, he says to the men; “I want you to remember who you are, you’re the 10th Light horse, men from Western Australia, don’t forget it”. ANZAC day reminds us that we should never forget the character of the men and women who fought for our country. However, we should also reflect on our own character and the character we want to teach our children. Who are we and what do we believe? At Dalby Christian College, we want our students to know that they are children of God whose purpose is to glorify Him with their lives. To grow up to be young men and women of principle who have the courage to stand up for what is good and right. The first is: affection. The Bible says if you love your child you’ll discipline them. And you’ll do it in love, and not anger. Don’t buy into the idea that good parents don’t discipline their children because they ‘love them too much’. The truth is, if you don’t discipline your child it’s not because you love them too much, it’s because you love yourself too much. A Gallup poll revealed that more than 90 per cent of graduating high school seniors wished their parents and teachers had loved them enough to discipline them more and require more of them. Like water, we follow the path of least resistance. It’s much easier to let things slide, avoid confrontation, stick your head in the sand, and hope things will get better, than it is to suffer the pain of disciplining a child you love. Keep in mind, however, that the only person who ever got anywhere by letting something slide was a trombone player. Seriously, the Bible says, ‘Whom the Father loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights.’ (Proverbs 3:12 NKJV) Let that sink in! The greatest and wisest father of all is God. He not only loves, He is love. Yet we read here that our loving God is one who disciplines. Any parent who refuses to discipline their child is really saying they are a better parent than God. Love always does what is best for the other person. And there are times when love demands discipline and training. The Word for Today, Thursday 4th May 2017, pg 5. My trip to Chile over the school holidays has been rewarded beyond expectations. A week in Patagonia that included the popular 5-day W Circuit in Torres del Paine National Park proved to a be a valuable time of solitude spent with God through the challenges and reward of a multi-day hike in challenging conditions. One of the many blessings was the opportunity of language and culture immersion among Chilenos and fellow trekkers as well as experiencing the significance of ecotourism in Chile. I spent the second week with a pastor’s family from a previous mission trip in 2012/2013. My Spanish language skills were put to the test in a meeting with a school in rural Chile to establish a connection between their English and our Spanish programs, assisted by my pastor friend. The meeting with the Principal and Head of English (and his Australian assistant) was pleasant and promising. We have since been in contact and I will keep you posted on developments. I thank you for your encouragement, support and prayers for my time away in Chile. I believe the experience will bear much fruit in the development of our College’s Spanish program.
