China Day 2 Homework
Latitude and Longitude Review
Example of how to write a measurement with latitude and longitude:
60⁰N, 120⁰E
You must have: the number, degree sign, capitalized direction letter, and a comma between latitude and longitude.
Remember that latitude and longitude are used together to tell exactly where places are located on the planet.
For example, Democracy Prep Harlem is found at 41⁰N, 74⁰E
Longitude is the second number. It is also measured in
degrees (⁰) and is labeled with an E or W. Longitude lines
are measured from the prime meridian.
Example from map – Beijing is found at 115⁰E (it doesn’t
say E, but you know China is east of England where the
prime meridian is)
Latitude goes first. It is measured in degrees (⁰) and is
found with an N or S. Latitude lines are measured from
the equator.
Example from map – Beijing is found at 40⁰N (it doesn’t
say N, but you know China is north of the equator)
1. What is wrong with this latitude/longitude measurement? 25⁰E, 55⁰N
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
2. What is wrong with this latitude/longitude measurement? 55⁰S 75⁰W
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
3. Explain, using evidence, what latitude and longitude are used for.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
4. What are the four parts of a latitude and longitude measurement you MUST have?
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
5. Why would it be a problem for geographers and sailors to do their jobs if there was no latitude and longitude
information?
