Self-Defense for Women with Detective Juan Rodriquez, Owner of Summit
Training Academy
Saturday, April 1, at 9:30 a.m. in the Large Auditorium
The best way to prepare yourself to fight off an attacker is to take a self-defense class. Join us as
Det. Juan Rodriquez, owner of the Summit Training Academy, teaches you how to size up a
situation and decide what to do. He will also teach things you can do to get away, including ways
to break an attacker's grasp and ways to catch your attacker off guard. Participation is free;
however, online registration is required as space is limited.
Calligraphy Basics for Beginners with Elizabeth Van Der Kamp
Saturday, April 1, at 2 p.m. in Room 102 (Lower Level)
If you frequent social media or have been to a wedding, chances are you’ve seen how beautiful
calligraphy can be. If you’ve ever wanted to learn calligraphy yourself, this program is for you.
Elizabeth Van Der Kamp will go over some of the basic calligraphy shapes and tools you’ll need
to get started and show you how to use them.

Shred It! Recycle It!
Friday, April 7, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Library's Back Parking Lot
Join us in the back parking lot to help the planet by shredding your documents and! Secure
Destruction’s shredding truck will be on site to destroy your sensitive documents and files.
Please do not bring any metal or plastic. Boxed paper will be shredded and boxes returned.
Protec Recycling will also be on hand to take and recycle your old electronics, batteries,
appliances, ink cartridges, and other items. Secure hard drive destruction on-site for $10. No TVs

Homewood Chamber of Commerce, Secure Destruction, Protec Recycling, and Homewood

Opening to Flow – Poetry and Yoga
Mondays, April 10 & 24, at 10 a.m. in the Large Auditorium
What do poetry and yoga have in common? A call to pay attention. An exploration of self. An
invitation to notice. Yoga teacher and librarian Marie Blair brings movement and words together
during National Poetry Month. No experience with either yoga or poetry is necessary, and adults
of all ages are welcome. It is low-impact and designed with seniors in mind. Bring your
curiosity. Wear comfortable clothes. Come prepared to listen and discuss poetry followed by
exploring gentle movement. Participants will receive handouts of poems by Rumi, Mary Oliver,
and Wendell Berry, among others. No registration required, but please bring your own mat.

UAB Neuroscience Café - Concussion in Football
Thursday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. in the Large Auditorium
When a football player suffers a concussion during a game or practice, it's serious business. In a
concussion, the brain shakes so forcefully that it hits the inside of the skull. That injures the
brain. Doctors, coaches, and researchers are focused on the damage concussions can do to
football players’ brains as a result of the many tackles they endure. Research shows that athletes
who have repeated concussions are more likely to get long-term brain damage, including a
condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease that mimics
dementia. Join us as UAB doctors and researchers discuss what we know about concussion in
football and what we're doing about it.
Derby Days Cocktails

Prep for the Kentucky Derby with bartender and writer Clair McLafferty's discussion of
bourbon's role in the annual event. Wear your best Derby hat for a chance to win a special prize.
After the program Ms. McLafferty will be selling and signing copies of her book, The Classic &
Craft Cocktail Recipe Book: The Definitive Guide to Mixing Perfect Cocktails from Aviation to
Zombie. Ages 21 and up. Tickets are $10 and include two adult beverages and light refreshments.
