Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 Introduction to PowerPoint The PowerPoint Interface Open a new, blank presentation. PowerPoint Ribbon at top; click on various tabs to access different features. Add New, Open, Slide Show from Beginning to Quick Access Toolbar. Main slide pane on right. Slide tab and Outline tab in the left pane. Try sliding the split bar divider between the left and main areas to see changes in the left area. The Notes pane is at the bottom. There are four view options at the bottom right-hand side of the window o Normal view o Slide sorter o Reading o Slide show Zooming In and Out o Ctrl+mouse wheel o Slider at bottom right-hand side of the window Title and Subtitle Text 1. First (title) slide is added by default to all new presentations. 2. To add a title and subtitle to this slide layout, click in the placeholders provided and begin typing. Type “My Show” in the title placeholder. 3. Click in the subtitle placeholder. Type “Simple but Effective” in the subtitle placeholder. Adding New Slides 1. While in the Slides tab, left click on the first slide to select it and press ENTER. 2. A new slide is added. 3. Left click on Layout in the Slides group (Home Tab). a. These are suggested layouts. b. Content is text, charts, pictures – just about anything but a title or subtitle c. You can always use a blank slide and insert your own text and pictures. 4. Right click on this newest slide and left click on New Slide 5. Left click on the New Slide button on the Ribbon in the Slides group, not the arrow. 6. Left click on the arrow, but don’t add a slide this way. 7. Notice the difference between the two actions of the New Slide button. 8. You should now have four slides. Loveland Library Introduction to PowerPoint Page 1 of 3 Navigating and Adding Text 1. Left click slide 2, click on title placeholder, and type “Limit Text on a Slide”. 2. In slide 3 type “Don’t Muddle your Message” in title placeholder. 3. In slide 4 type “Engage your Audience” in title placeholder. Text Indenting 1. Go back to the second slide “Limit text on a slide”. 2. Left click “Click to add text” (notice the bullet) and type “Put details in notes.” ENTER 3. New bullet appears. TAB. (Indents and bullet style changes) Type “Make notes available”. ENTER 4. TAB Type “Use extra slides”. Do not press ENTER. 5. Put cursor on last bullet. Drag four-headed pointer to left until it is under the top level bullet. 6. Press CTRL+Z to undo the last action. 7. Use Decrease Indent (Decrease list level) on the Ribbon to change the indent. 8. In the Slides Tab pane, click on Slides tab, then Outline tab, and then Slides tab again. Notice the difference. You may also edit your slides in the Outline tab view. Type and View Notes 1. Drag split bar above notes area to make it just a little bigger. 2. Type “First thing to say”, ENTER, “Second thing to say”, ENTER “Third thing to say” ENTER. 3. Formatting, i.e. bullets can be used on notes. Try increasing the font size to 16 and changing the font color to red. Note that not all formatting changes are visible in this view. 4. Left click View>Notes Page. This view allows you to see all formatting changes. 5. Type “Fourth thing to say” 6. Click Normal on the View tab Ribbon. This returns you to Normal view, but the notes pane is still enlarged. 7. Return the Notes pane to its original size by holding down CTRL and clicking Normal View. WordArt Styles 1. Go back to the Home tab. 2. Select the title on the first slide by clicking on the dashed-line border of the placeholder. Notice that the placeholder now appears as a solid line. This will select everything within the placeholder. 3. Click on Drawing Tools>Format>WordArt styles 4. Hover your mouse over some of the styles to see the effects and then click on a style to select it. Loveland Library Introduction to PowerPoint Page 2 of 3 Picking a Theme 1. Click Design on the Ribbon. 2. Click on the small arrow for the dropdown menu in Themes. 3. Look at the designs in This Presentation and Built-in; and notice that there are many more available online. (There might already be some custom designs there also.) Click here for 4. Click somewhere in a blank area on the screen to get rid of the dropdown menu, and then slowly move your mouse over the various themes. menu. a. Notice what happens to the current slide. b. As you pause over each theme, notice that they all have a name. 5. Left click (select) a theme. 6. Look at what happens to all the slides. 7. Left click (select) another theme. 8. Look at what happens to all the slides. 9. Click on the second slide, and then hold down the control key and click the fourth slide. 10. Click on a different theme. 11. Go back and make all the slides Opulent by right clicking and selecting apply to all. 12. We could also use a right click on any theme to select various themes for some or all of the slides. Deleting Slides 1. On the Slides tab of the Slides/Outline task pane on the left of your screen, click on the thumbnail of the slide wish to delete. Press the Delete key on your keyboard. Moving Slides 1. Click on the slide you wish to move to select it. 2. Drag the slide to the new location. 3. A horizontal line will appear as you drag the slide. When the horizontal line is in the correct location, release the mouse and the slide will be in the new location. Moving Slides using Slide Sorter View 1. At the bottom right-hand area of the window, click on the Slide Sorter view. 2. Try changing the order of some of the slides by dragging and dropping slides to a new location. This is very handy for working with large numbers of slides. 3. At the bottom right-hand area of the window, click on Normal view to exit slide sorter view.
