Raise your Glass

Raise your Glass
A street sketch for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
This sketch requires two narrators and a chorus who stand in a line and perform the
actions specified.
Chorus:
Let off party poppers and say: Pop!
Narrator 1:
It’s time to celebrate!
[Chorus put party hats on one by one down the line]
Narrator 2:
Sit down for a little tea and cake.
[Chorus bring their cups to their lips and freeze]
Narrator 1:
Enjoy the party, raise your glass,
[Move cup from lips outward and freeze]
Narrator 2:
Pause for a moment to remember the past.
Narrator 1:
A toast to the Queen in her Jubilee Year,
Sixty years reigning here.
Chorus:
Cheers! [Drink and freeze]
Narrator 2:
Let’s remember the crowning in fifty-three,
The cheering crowds lining the street,
[Chorus cheer and wave and then freeze in a waving position]
Waving to the Queen as she drove by
Narrator 1:
And all the people watching it live
[Chorus crowd in staring at the audience as if it is the TV and then
freeze]
Crowded round boxes in neighbour’s houses,
Listening as the Archbishop announces
[During this chorus become the Queen, the Archbishop, a throne for Queen
to sit in and the watching crowd. They freeze until the next direction]
Narrator 2:
What it is the Queen promises to do?
To govern Great Britain, the Commonwealth too;
To bring justice with mercy and uphold the faith
They listen as the Queen this oath makes
Narrator 1:
They watch as she’s presented with a Bible, God’s word
[Chorus bring on Bible and present it to the Queen]
The most valuable thing that this world affords.
Narrator 2:
They observe as she goes to be anointed beneath
A canopy of gold, God’s strength for her deed.
[In the next section the crown is slowly brought in]
Narrator 1:
They watch as she receives; a sword,
To protect and defend the oppressed and the poor
[The Archbishop crowns the Queen]
Narrator 2:
A robe, an orb, the rods and the crown
As cries of
All:
long live the Queen!
Narrator 2:
Narrator 1:
resound.
Let’s remember the parties that people then had
[Break out of the solemn mood dance into a line and into a party freeze]
Tables in the street, bunting and flags,
Narrator 2:
Fancy dress contests, fun and food.
[Change party pose into a just about to eat something freeze].
The country in a celebratory mood
Narrator 1:
And let’s relive the parties here today,
Sixty years into her Majesty’s reign
Narrator 2:
For now we celebrate promises kept
Over years of reigning expectations met.
Narrator 1:
So enjoy the party, raise your glass
[The chorus raise glasses and freeze]
A toast to the Queen, thanks for all that is past.
Narrator 2:
And here’s to the future, all that’s to come
To many more happy years on the throne.
[Chorus clink glasses, drink and then freeze]
