COC Education Team January 2017 Newsletter Dalhousie Elementary School Newsletter Page 6 of 7 Safety & School Patrols As the weather improves, our patrols will be out on a more regular basis. You can help us by reminding your children about safety procedures! Always look both ways before crossing the street Always cross at corners, or at marked crosswalks Never run across the street Never run into the street between parked cars Obey all signs and signals List to and obey the school safety patrols Do not go with or take anything from strangers Do not walk on snow hills beside the street in the winter Do not throw snow Please remind your children to cross where patrols are stationed and encourage them to come to school only when patrols are on duty. Patrol Times: 8:40 a.m. – 8:50 a.m. 11:45 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. 12:35 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. 3:35 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Motorists are also reminded to be considerate to young children and drive carefully. Also remember that passing a school bus (when lights are flashing) at any time from any direction is against the law and can result in a large traffic fine. Do not park close to patrol crossings as it blocks sight lines. The school parking lost is very crowded and dangerous when used by parents. Please arrange alternate drop-off and pick up spots. Mrs. Huber & Mrs. Bracken, the patrol supervisors, would like to congratulate the grade five and six patrols on an excellent start to the year. They have been punctual and responsible teams so far! Parents of patrols should know that the children have received their official patrol cards issued by the Winnipeg Police Department. These cards permit entrance to several movies during the year as well as to Wheelies on Wednesday evenings. Please be aware the school does not provide transportation or supervision for these events. Many other incentives will be given throughout the year. PTV VOICES Pembina Trails Voices is celebrating its 15th season of offering a world class choral experience to students in Pembina trails School Division. All interested choristers from Kindergarten through grade twelve are invited to be part of the excitement! Pembina Trails Voices is a choir program which offers a five concert season for our various performing ensembles. Choirs also perform as guest artists at community events, sing in the Winnipeg Music Festival (National Classes), record and tour annually, either locally or internationally. PTV choirs are frequent guests of other professional music organizations in the city such as the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony, Winnipeg Singers and Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. Interested students who love to sing and would love to sing with others who share their interest in choral music, are invited to consider auditioning for the 2017 – 2018 season. Audition packages are available the week of March 20 from your school office, your school’s music teacher, or from the PTV office at 181 Henlow Bay. All audition forms must be returned by Friday April 21st. For further information see our website at https://ewww.pembinatrails.ca/affiliates/pembinatrailsvoices Page 7 of 7 Dalhousie Elementary School Newsletter Musings from Music The Winnipeg Music Festival season has come and gone very quickly. An explanation of the festival “system” is important to understand the gold, silver and bronze standings. While the festival was once named the “Winnipeg Music COMPETITION Festival” the festival board dropped the competition portion of the title some years ago. There are still trophies awarded for best performances in some categories, and individuals and groups are invited to perform at a final celebration concert, but in each class there are NO first, second, and third placements. The Gold, Silver, Bronze and participation designations are an indication of the level of proficiency of each performance at the festival. A gold indicates that everything is in place in the performance. In group performances like ours, that would include focus and attention to the conductor, entrance to place on stage, stage presence, even dress. It would also, of course, include musical skills like great intonation, articulation, and shaping of phrases. It would also include dynamics (loud and quiet), attention to tempo markings and other ideas that the composer placed in the music, such as pauses, staccato rhythms, etc. In a choral group, these categories would also include the telling of the story of the poetry in a piece of music. If all of these things are present in the performance, the group is awarded a gold standing. There may be one gold standing in a class of choirs, or none, or many, depending upon the caliber of the groups in the class. Our groups represented Dalhousie very well and each group was complimented on their audience behavior. Well done boys and girls. Silver standing was achieved by our boys’ and girls’ choirs, our Grades Two/Three choir, Ms. Allan’s class, Ms. Sobkowich’s class, Ms. Mansbridge’s class and Mr. Mitchell’s class. Gold standing was achieved by Mr. Flett’s class, Ms. Refvik’s class, Mr. Ervick’s class and our Grade Six Handbell Choir. For all of our choirs, we are again indebted to Ms. D. Windsor. Without her wonderful support as accompanist, we would not sing nearly as well. Mrs. Windsor was presented with the inaugural Helen Black Award at this year’s festival. This award acknowledges accompanists who are masters in their field. We also thank Ms. Morrow who spent time “fine-tuning” our bell work. Thanks to both of these talented and generous women. Our grade five and six recorder club had the opportunity to work with Southpointe school students and then perform with the Winnipeg Symphony orchestra. This was a challenging and enriching experience. The students’ very good friend, Mrs. Klassen came to help us prepare, and then, during our break over lunch, she gave us a guided tour of all the back stage ins and outs of the concert hall. It was a great day. Speaking of recorder, our upper elementary students need never use the “bored” word over their spring break. All could be practicing recorder and working toward achieving the next step in recorder belts sometime in April. Our extra- curricular music clubs continue to work toward their Music Monday Celebration on Monday May 1. Parents of club members will receive information on this evening shortly after the break. Happy Spring Break!! Mrs. Sjoberg
