the winner of the Scholarship for the
District Voice of Democracy Essay
Contest. Her essay has now advanced

As the new state assessment, State of Texas Assessment of
Academic Readiness (STAAR), process begins, we encourage
parents to follow our website to learn about the assessment,
how the Texas Education Agency requires the STAAR End-ofCourse results to be utilized, and the plan that Early I.S.D. has
developed for the benefit of our students. The FAQ has been
linked to Early I.S.D.’s website to introduce you to the process.
THANK YOU to all of our students for the manner in which you

Who were you on this day in history?
Mrs. Taylor’s 5th grade social studies classes went back
in time to the New England Colony of Massachusetts. Each student got to research and “become” a
New England Puritan man or woman. Students created
projects like old fashioned letters and advertisements
depending on their role in the colony. Then they held
an old fashioned Puritan town meeting with governor
John Winthrop residing. The students portraying leaders had to prepare speeches. If the student was a minister, they had to give a “sermon.” Students had to
follow town meeting procedures; politely asking, “May
I have the floor?” Topics at the town meeting included
these questions: Should
we expel Anne
Hutchinson
from the colony? Should we
allow citizens
to have consent
in the government? Farmers, fishermen,
and shipbuilders reported on their different industries. They even
had a constable who helped keep the peace during the
meeting. The following were town meeting decisions:
Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were expelled
from the colony (in keeping with history). Thomas
Hooker gathered followers and decided to leave Massachusetts Colony and start a new colony called Con-

Letters From Home
On January 4th,
the 5th grade
teachers received
3 letters from a
soldier serving in
Afghanistan. He
was responding
to the letters Ms.
Grimes’ 5th grade
writing classes
had prepared in the fall. Each student wrote a letter
and drew a picture to send to a soldier. Eric Olson responded and even sent a patch from his brigade/ company. We are so honored and thrilled to have received
these letters and we continue to support our troops all
over the world! The three students who were sent a
response were AJ Brightman, Alexis Brightman, and
Pattimae Meeks.

Multiplication Tournament
Tuesdie Richmond’s fourth grade math students at Early Elem.
have been learning and practicing their multiplication
facts through a
game called Multiplication Baseball. This game then develops into a series of mini tournaments in
class that leads to the 4th Grade Multiplication Tournament where only the top 25
compete for medals.
Twenty-five fourth
grade students competed in the 4th
Grade Multiplication
Tournament!

The Early third grade students have been
studying matter in science. Students created a “Crazy Colloid” made up of water
and cornstarch to experiment with to determine if it was a liquid or a
solid when mixed. Students were intrigued
with the different experiments, because
they were able to see that the substance
was a solid but also proved to be a liquid,
too. Pictured are just a few of the students
who participated in the experiment. Left to
right- Kolby Godfrey, Aaron Calloway, Lane
Kellar, Kyler Dreith, and Hailey Sliger.

Great Artistry!!
Earlier in the year, Mrs. Taylor’s 5th grade students learned
about the southwest United States and the
colony of New Spain in social studies. As a
part of the lesson, the 5th grade students at
Early Elementary studied Tejanos and participated in a state-wide coloring contest
honoring Tejano heritage. Alaine Cooney,
from Mrs. Hagood’s homeroom, won first
place! She was awarded an enlarged
poster of her drawing, a certificate, posters, and a $25.00 cash prize award. We
are thrilled that Alaine won such a honor!
