Advanced Placement Why AP?

Advanced Placement (AP)
courses continue a tradition of academic
excellence at St. Clement’s School by providing
you with the opportunity to learn at a university level.
Advanced Placement is a natural fit with our School’s
enriched academic
curriculum. Our commitment to AP is clear—
philosophy and
St. Clement’s School is the fastest-growing AP school
most extensive
program of any Canadian
independent school. AP courses are
in Canada and offers the
administered by the American College Board and
are taught in over 18,000 schools worldwide.
Why AP?
Broaden Your Horizons
AP courses examine topics in greater depth, providing
you with the opportunity to deepen your thinking, build
your academic skills and foster your love of learning.
Through rigorous study, independent and collaborative
learning, and the exploration of different perspectives, AP
challenges you to broaden your intellectual horizons and
realize your full potential.
Have Flexibility in Your Program
AP programs are tailored to meet your specific academic
needs. You decide on the number of AP courses you want
to take and the areas of AP study you want to pursue. A
full program of arts and sciences can be equally achieved
with AP, ensuring that no door is ever closed to you in your
future studies.
Maintain a Healthy Balance
An AP program carefully designed just for you allows other
areas of interest and co-curricular activities to remain a
part of your school life. With thoughtful course planning,
it is possible to achieve a healthy balance so that your last
years of high school are also filled with friends, interests,
and wonderful memories.
Gain a Competitive Edge
Success in an AP course demonstrates your readiness to
study at a higher level. When you are applying to university,
your AP achievement represents a commitment to academic
excellence and a willingness to take on challenges. For many
students, their AP experience sets them apart during the
competitive university admissions process.
Earn University Credit or Advanced Standing
Once you arrive at university, you find yourself better
prepared and often have more course options available
to you thanks to your AP experience. Success in your AP
exams provides you with advanced standing or academic
credit at participating universities in Canada, the United
States, and overseas. This head start affords you the time
to expand your areas of focus, take more classes at an
advanced level, study abroad, or graduate early.
Achieve International Recognition
The AP program acts as an international yardstick against
which you can measure your educational progress. Admissions
committees at the most competitive universities recognize
the high standard of AP exams and view the AP experience
as a reliable indicator of future success at a post-secondary
level. Universities and colleges worldwide recognize AP in
their admissions process (including 90% of North American
colleges and universities). National university systems in the
UK, France, and Germany recognize the AP program.
Margaret Irwin
St. Clement’s School Class of 2013,
Harvard University Class of 2017
(Pre-Medicine)
The AP program was one of the reasons
I decided to come to SCS. I hope to be a
paediatrician someday, so I took almost
all the AP courses offered in maths and sciences. I also
love languages, so I took AP French and English. These
courses opened my mind, challenged me, and helped me
to feel more prepared for university, as the course material
we covered was similar to the curriculum in my first year.
I’m glad that I had the exposure to this type of course in
the more comfortable environment of high school—and
particularly at a school like SCS where our teachers are so
approachable and helpful.
Vicki Wang
St. Clement’s School Class of 2005,
Oberlin College Class of 2010
(B.A. Hons and BM in Biology,
Piano Performance and Chemistry),
University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine
The AP program at SCS provided me with
a breadth of subjects to choose from, and I started my
post-secondary career with a toolbox of study skills and
approaches to problem solving. The institution I attended
after graduating SCS let me fast track through a handful of
introductory courses as they counted my AP examinations
as credit towards these first-year courses. I feel that the
AP program prepared me for the academic challenge of
university, and allowed me to focus more attention on the
other aspects of the transition from high school, such as
moving away from home and meeting new people.
Rachael Alexandroff

Princeton University PhD Student
(Department of Physics and Astronomy)
One of the wonderful things about AP is
its flexibility. AP does not limit you to a
particular mix of subjects but allows you to
increase the rigor in specific areas of your coursework as
much as desired. I was able to take all my science courses at the AP level, and I think this gave me a significant
advantage when applying to study physics at university. I
know my AP experience helped my transition to university
because the program introduced me to both the analytical
techniques I would need in university classes and also to
some of the explicit material in my first year classes. The
early exposure to rigorous methods of analytical analysis
and the enhancement of critical thinking at the AP level
have benefitted me, and continue to benefit me, tremendously.

AP Capstone
AP Capstone is built on the foundation of a new, two-year high school
course sequence, and is designed to complement and enhance the in-depth
discipline-specific study provided through AP courses. Developed in response
to feedback from higher education, it cultivates curious, independent, and
collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical and evidencebased decisions.
St. Clement’s School was the first girls’ independent school in Canada to
offer the innovative new AP Capstone Program.
A Sample of our AP Achievement in 2015
Success on an AP exam is defined as an exam score of 3 or higher, which
represents the score point that research finds predictive of university success
and university graduation. The mean score for St. Clement’s students
surpassed the mean global score in 100% of the subject exam areas written
by SCS students.
