Keynote Speakers
David P. Hopkins, MD, MPH
Dr. Hopkins is the medical officer for the Community Guide Branch at CDC.
He trained in internal medicine in San Jose, California, and followed that
up with a MPH from UC Berkeley. Dr. Hopkins joined the CDC as an EIS
officer in 1995 and spent two years with the New York State Health
Department here in Albany, working on tuberculosis. He joined the
Community Guide Branch at CDC in 1997, and has remained with the
Guide for the last 20 years. In addition to leading the most recent
systematic review updates on interventions to increase vaccination
coverage, Dr. Hopkins has worked on sets of systematic reviews for the
topics of tobacco prevention and control, asthma, cardiovascular disease
prevention, and diabetes.
Jill B. Roark, MPH
Ms. Roark leads the adolescent immunization communications team for
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where she has focused on
HPV vaccine communications for the past seven years. Jill witnessed the
devastation of HPV disease firsthand, in a college-town Planned
Parenthood while managing the abnormal pap follow-up process, as well
as the colposcopy clinic. Jill regularly presents on HPV infection, disease,
vaccination, and communicating successfully about HPV vaccine. Jill has
worked in public health for 20 years and received her degrees from the
University of Florida.
Karin Szymanski , MEd
Karin is the Marketing Manager for The Arizona Partnership for
Immunization (TAPI), a non-profit statewide coalition focusing on
immunizations across the lifespan.
She joined TAPI in 2010 with a focus on educating child care centers about
the importance of ASIIS, Arizona’s immunization registry and developing a
cocooning project with hospitals and community health centers. Since then,
her position has grown to special projects in the community focusing on
vaccine education. Some of these projects include: a teen focused
meningitis campaign, HPV vaccination, a growth chart including
preconception health and health information through age 6, and outreach for increased health care
worker and adult vaccination. She also oversees TAPI’s website, marketing materials and social
media.
Karin is not new to the world of non-profits and has worked in this sector for almost 20 years. She
holds a B.A. in Sociology from Westminster College and a M.Ed. from Northern Arizona University.
