Vocabulary Lesson 3 – In Character: Words about people
The words below all describe a person’s character. Think about times you have seen a person be, for
example, honorable, shrewd, or frustrated.
1. desperate – To be desperate is to need or want something so much that you are almost
hopeless. (adjective) The desperate man reached out for the lifeboat to keep from drowning.
2. frustrated – To be frustrated is to be discouraged or prevented from reaching a goal. (adjective)
Mom was frustrated in her effort to keep the kitchen floor clean because the baby kept dropping
his food.
3. honorable – An honorable person has high moral standards and deserves respect. (adjective)
Cheating on tests is not honorable behavior.
4. ill-informed – Someone who is ill-informed does not have enough information or has the wrong
information. (adjective) An ill-informed citizen will not know how to vote in an election.
5. odious – An odious person or thing causes or deserves hate. (adjective) The odious ruler put
thousands of people in prison.
6. shrewd – A shrewd person is clever in useful ways. (adjective) A shrewd shopper watches the
newspapers for sales.
7. solemn – To be solemn is to be serious or grave in manner. (adjective) The doctor gave us the
bad news with a solemn voice.
8. well-informed – Someone who is well-informed has accurate information. (adjective) The
school’s Web site keeps parents well-informed about homework.
9. candid – A candid person is open and honest in expressing opinions. (adjective) When dad gave
his candid opinion of my paper, I decided to rewrite it.
10. optimistic – An optimistic person views things in the most hopeful and positive way. (adjective)
Sue thought she had failed the test, but her mother was more optimistic.
For this week’s homework, students will need to create a Frayer model for each of their vocabulary
words. This was directly taught to students today. Here is an example of what each Frayer model should
