The Kingdom of Macedonia Conquers Greece
• Philip II, king of Macedonia, sought to build an empire
• He organized a professional army and used new weapons and strategies
• Philip conquered Greece by 338 B.C.
• He was assassinated in 336 B.C., and his 20-year-old son Alexander
became king
Alexander the Great Builds an Empire
• Alexander defeated the Persians in Anatolia then drove
them out of Egypt
• He then attacked the Persian capital Persepolis and
controlled the Persian, Empire by 331 B.C.
• Alexander and his armies reached the Indus River Valley
by 326 B.C.
• Alexander died of a fever in 323 B.C., and his empire was
divided into three parts
The Cultural Effects of Alexander’s Conquests
• Alexander and his armies spread Greek culture, but they also adopted
the cultures of the conquered lands
• The blend of Greek, Persian, Egyptian, and Indian cultures became known
as Hellenistic culture
• Alexandria, Egypt, founded in 332 B.C., served as an important center of
learning for over 400 years
