Student Show
February 4 - March 3
Opening reception on February 4, 6 - 8 p.m.
This show illustrates the creativity, skill and
inspiration that unfold in the Minnetonka
Center for the Arts’ studios. Exhibiting in a
professional gallery setting is an important
part of the artistic learning process and each
year this show reminds us of the power,
potential and importance of the visual arts
in our lives. Come see what attracts people
to our studios and keeps them coming back.
It may help you find the perfect class to
begin your journey!

Arden Harrison-Bushnell
February 4 - March 31
Opening reception on February 4,
6 - 8 p.m. coinciding with the Student Show
Henrietta Murphy Room
Arden Harrison Bushnell uses a rich variety
of fabrics, embroidery and beads to create
her intricately detailed hand-stitched fiber
art. Her work has grown in scale from small
panels she created during a period of
physical recovery to the ambitious themed
pieces she creates today.

Note
Dear Friends,
As the winter fast approaches, our days are filled
with class planning and preparations for our
popular Arts of the Holidays Show & Sale. This
issue is packed with classes and workshops to
nurture your creative self during the dark days
of January and February. Peruse the offerings
and register today for as many classes as your
schedule allows. Then mark your calendar for
our very special Arts of the Holidays Private
Preview Party back by popular demand on
Wednesday, November 11. Party guests will have
first crack at the sale, time with the artists and
the chance to enjoy great food and music – all in
the company of good friends. Watch for your
invitation and be sure to reserve your spot! Tickets
are limited and available on first come, first served
basis. If you can’t make the preview, do join us
for the public grand opening on November 12.
Many of you have commented recently about
the quality and variety of the food in the
Art Center Café under the direction of our chef,
Melinda Alves. In a very short time, she has
literally put our café on the map! (Rick Nelson,
Star Tribune food editor, included the Art
Center Café in a July 9 story, “Summer dining
served on the shores of Lake Minnetonka”)
Thank you for the great reception you’ve given
Melinda. I know you value this service, so
please dine often and encourage fellow students,
members and friends to do the same so the Art
Center Café may continue to survive and thrive.
Melinda’s food will not disappoint – I promise!
For more about Chef Melinda and the weekly
menu, visit the Art Center Café webpage at
minnetonkaARTS.org.
Bon appétit!
Shortly, many of you will receive a request for
funding in the form of our Fall Appeal. Please
give this request your careful consideration.
Students, you probably know that your tuition
payment does not cover the cost of delivering
your class. In fact, it only covers about 65 percent,
which means we must raise the balance of
our expenses through requests like these. Our
mission is to keep visual arts classes affordable
and accessible to the broadest possible audience.
If not for grantors like the Minnesota State Arts
Board and The McKnight Foundation, and the
generosity of corporations and individuals like
you, this would not be possible. This fiscal year
alone, we need to raise more than $400,000 to
fill the gap and help us keep up with demand.
Your gift, whatever the amount, will be greatly
appreciated and put to good use. Please consider
making a gift today!
Roxanne L. Heaton

Take advantage of free Wi-Fi when you’re in class. On your laptop, tablet or phone:
• Go to Settings (the gear icon) and turn on Wi-Fi.
• Click on MCFTA-Guest and enter the password (available from your instructor
or the Registrar).
You’ll get better reception with Wi-Fi than cellular data (LTE) service. Plus, using the Art Center’s
Wi-Fi saves money and avoids data fees from your cellular carrier.
ABOUT THE COVERS
The Arts of the Holidays Show & Sale attracts visitors
from all over the region. Thousands of handmade
gifts of art and fine craft find happy homes! Support
the arts and shop local for the holidays this year.
Look for
at the top of your screen, which means Wi-Fi is on. If you see bars or LTE, you’re
using cellular networks for data. When in doubt, go to Settings and turn Wi-Fi on.
The Minnetonka Center for the Arts is pleased to offer this service to enhance your educational
and creative experience. Do not stream music or videos while at the Art Center. Bandwidth
is limited, so please download what you need beforehand.

FUNCTIONAL
EARTHENWARE:
BUILDING A SURFACE
Kristin Pavelka
Skill level: AB, I, AD
Earthenware clay is forgiving, the low-fire
color palette is infinite and the firings are
economical, making this genre of pottery
very creative and easily accessible! Explore
multiple ways to build up interesting
surfaces during each stage of the making
process: wet, leatherhard and bisque.
You will learn a variety of slip decorating
techniques, how terra sigillata can enhance
the surfaces and how to layer glaze to
create depth. In the last class, we discuss
the finished pots, providing good feedback
and ideas. Both wheel-throwers and
handbuilders welcome. While geared to
earthenware, the techniques in this course
will benefit ceramicists working in all firing
ranges and clay varieties.

Watercolor portraits of children are a
lot like children themselves – you can’t
control them 100 percent. It is precisely
that natural, unforced quality that makes
watercolor the perfect medium to capture
their youthful character in transparent
washes and lively brushwork. Working
from photos and sketches, you will learn
to capture a child’s likeness and character
through demonstration, exercises, guided
work time and individualized feedback.
You will explore composition, focal area,
value scheme planning, color scheme
development and portrait painting
techniques. Bring at least three color
photos or laser prints of your youthful
subject and request a materials list from
the Registrar. Bring a lunch for the
half-hour break. Prerequisite: a beginning
watercolor or figure drawing class.

Art Center classes with a business and consulting
career. For the past more than 10 years, he has been
a full-time visual artist with an emphasis in
photography, ceramics and painting.
Traudi Bestler trained at the Weavers Guild of
Minnesota, the Weaving School and Sievers School
of Fiber Arts. She has been a teacher of weaving,
dyeing and fiber arts for more than 20 years. Traudi
has also been a workshop presenter at the annual
Minnesota Weaving Federation and schools and
guilds around the country.

Galleries in International Market Square and
at the Galleria.
Geneviève Chamberland, a native of Québec,
obtained her B.F.A. from the University of
Minnesota with an emphasis in ceramics. Her clay
journey was vastly influenced by a research project

mediums is exciting to Geneviève as she amplifies
materials’ properties to enhance contrasts and
create more complex visual conversations.

and the appeal of architectural lines is a foundation
for her work. Her work has been shown at Grand
Hand Gallery in St. Paul and in Art-a-Whirl in
Minneapolis.

Laurie Lausen is an avid rug hooker whose fiber
journey has taken many paths. She began designing
and hooking rugs in the early 1970s while still
in school and in the 1980s founded L.J. Fibers, a
Minneapolis-based studio, gallery and retail shop

youth series classes, Summer Arts Camp and adults
with disabilities and at-risk youth through
Minnetonka Center for the Arts’ outreach program.

a studio potter/ceramic artist for more than thirty
years, actively teaching ceramics workshops and
demonstrations since 1979. With a B.F.A. from the
University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Jan’s work
grows out of a tradition of functional ceramics and
is informed by the strong sense of form found in the
art of many cultures, both ancient and contemporary.
Using a sixty-hour firing process further enhances
the unique subtleties of Jan’s work, which has been
featured in Clay Times and Ceramics Monthly and
is represented in private and public collections
including the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia;
