BASE Reception Baseline Assessment
Start school on the
right track with BASE
The BASE reception
baseline assessment is
a child-friendly on-entry
assessment which can
help you understand
quickly what each child
knows and can do right at
the start of their school
life.
BASE is completed one-toone with a teacher, teaching
assistant or responsible adult,
offering valuable time with each
child, and providing insight
beyond observation alone.
Milly the Bug guides each child
through a series of questions,
with lively illustrations and a
storybook-style approach.
The assessment takes 20
minutes on average. The
responses are sent directly to
CEM, so there is no data entry.
Measure progress over
the first year: An end-ofyear assessment to measure
2
progress across the reception
year, as well as an observationbased PSED assessment are
available as part of the BASE
Progress and BASE Inspection
Ready options. These
packages offer in-depth and
insightful formative reporting
that allows you to view
information at a pupil, class and
cohort level.
BASE Inspection Ready also
offers interactive reporting
providing contextual information
to school leaders enabling
them to benchmark their
pupils’ attainment and progress
measures in relation to schools
with similar characteristics.
The BASE
assessment covers:
•Literacy
•Numeracy
•Communication
•PSED1
Featuring a lively and engaging
interface, children enjoy
meeting Milly the Bug and
doing activities together. As
the assessment is adaptive,
it is accessible for almost
all children2- beginning with
very easy questions, it gets
progressively more difficult. If
a child is struggling to answer
questions correctly, they are
automatically moved on to the
next appropriate section.
‘The CEM assessments are a useful tool to have in the box and the more
information we have on the pupils the better’
1-PSED is not included with BASEline.
2-BASE may not be accessible for some children, such as those with severe visual impairments – please contact us if you have particular concerns.
David Tait, Headteacher Shincliffe Primary School, Durham

BASE Reception Baseline Assessment
Getting the most out of
your assessment
BASE Progress and BASE
Inspection Ready offer
sophisticated reporting to
help you get the most out
of your reception baseline
assessment.
Interactive reporting
with BASE Inspection
Ready
BASE Inspection Ready offers
two additional reports designed
to support school selfevaluation and improvement.
The School Comparison
Report allows you to
benchmark your school’s
performance against national
averages, as well as schools
with similar characteristics
modelled from a data set.
You can customise these
characteristics as appropriate
for your school, for example
the proportion of children
with English as an Additional
Language (EAL).

BASE Reception Baseline Assessment
The Inspection Ready
Report allows you to view
data for your whole cohort,
looking at the developmental
stage of children, or at progress
made over the reception year in
two separate views.
The School Comparison
Report and the Inspection
Ready Report can be filtered
by individual pupil or class, as
well as by key groups such as
gender or SEN.
‘We’ve never had so much
meaningful information
on our students. Teachers
love it and parents are
amazed!’
Gillian Kelsall, Headteacher, Sonning C of E
Primary School, Berkshire
Inspection ready report
• Gain reliable insight into each child’s development
• Understand pupil attainment in relation to national norms
• Measure progress over the reception year at a pupil, class and cohort level
• Easily present key information to school inspectors and parents or carers
