Matisse and Fauvist Style Exploring Colour Theory with Matisse Lesson delivered by Luke Owens This week we will be inspired by the paintings of the artist Henri Matisse. Matisse was a talented artist, painter, and sculptor. Henri Matisse was exploring emotion and colour. He created a style of art that used bright, bold colors and patterns with great energy. His work and those of others who followed his ideas were not liked by the critics. One critic said the paintings looked like "wild beasts" had painted them. The French word for wild beast is fauve. Matisse and those who used colour with wild energy were called Fauvists. Their artwork focused on expressing feelings through color and patterns. Students will explore the Fauvist use of colour, texture and pattern in painting with the simplistic "primitive style" of a face. Students will be introduced to colour theory, finding out about the colour wheel, primary colours, secondary colours, warm colours, cool colours and complimentary colours. We will produce paintings using a limited palette of colours encouraging understanding of colour, colour mixing and brush technique. We will build on recent knowledge from the Andy Warhol lesson that explored proportion in drawing.
