”Then Jesus began to denounce the towns where he had done so
many of his miracles, because they hadn’t repented of their sins and
turned to God…,28Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are
weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take my
yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and
you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I
give you is light.” — Matthew 11:20, 28-30
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
When Jesus was baptized and sent on his mission, it was to call people to
repentance so that they might participate in the realm of God. It was to call
people to stop what they were doing, take stock, and conform to the will of
God as revealed in his Word. We might imagine the scene of a military
post, everybody doing this and that, until the General arrives. Then everyone stops action, stands at attention, and obeys whatever orders the General gives. And if they had not been behaving appropriately before, they
certainly would be now. Now, I am not saying Jesus is like a military commander, but his impact on the world is intended to have the same effect—
to transform the culture of death into a culture of life.
After denouncing the stubbornness of people who had experienced his life-
giving power but refused to let it change them and lamenting their forfeit of
his salvation, Jesus issued an invitation to those who were still listening, still
hanging on his every word: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me.”
This was an invitation by the Master to new students. The yoke is the relationship of discipleship of a student and Master. The invitation asks for a
decision—will the student leave everything behind and follow the Master?
The yoke is not a relationship that can be fitted in with whatever else the
student might otherwise by doing, such as bowling on Monday, yoga on
Tuesday, golf on Wednesdays, Jesus on Thursdays...The yoke of discipleship is a 24/7 relationship of student and Master—living together, the Master modeling and the student imitating, the Master teaching and the student
learning, the Master speaking and the student listening and putting into
practice. It is an honor to be invited by a master to be a student.
Stewardship sounds easy, but it isn’t
“Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift” (2 Cor. 9:15)!
This is St. Paul’s exclamation upon hearing the Corinthian
Church’s response to the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ and his request for support for the Church in Jerusalem.
The Christians in Corinth heard and received God’s mercy in
Christ, and they responded to St. Paul’s call to support Christians in Jerusalem with
a collection. The Corinthian’s joy filled Jerusalem’s need.
This is the reality of stewardship. Because of God’s generosity in the giving of His
Son to die on the cross for us, we are to be generous with all that we receive from
Him. What do we receive? Everything. All that we are and all that we have is the
Lord’s. He is the creator and the giver. We are His creatures and those who receive
what He gives.
It sounds easy. And it is. But then again it isn’t. Stewardship is easy because it
God’s work. Through what God gives, we give to others. Through what God gives,
we support the work of the church for the life of the world. He gives; we receive.
And like our generous Father in Heaven, we, as His children, use what He gives to
us to love and serve others.
But stewardship is also difficult. That is because it goes against our natural inclination to think that what I have is mine to do what I want with. This is our sinful nature.
It is our selfishness and our greed. How can we who have been given everything—
life, food, clothing, house, home, forgiveness, divine sonship, an eternal inheritance
—be so stingy with what we give to the church, the place where we hear about and
receive all that God gives us and does for us? We are all guilty of this kind of thinking. And the only godly response is to repent and trust in the Gospel.
For if God has given you His own Son, will He not give you all things? Yes. He will.
This is His sure and certain promise. God provides for His people. He provides everything we need for this body and life and for the life that is to come.
The church is a mercy place it’s a place where God’s mercy in the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ, is given and received. For we who believe in
Christ, it means forgiveness, life, and salvation in the face of sin, death, and the
power of the devil. Here in the church we inhale God’s mercy in Word and Sacrament, and exhale this same mercy in love and service to our neighbor. And that is
an enduring, joyful thing to do. Our joy fills our neighbor’s need because His joy
filled ours (Heb. 12:2). Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!
So Jesus invites those who are still listening to be his disciples, his students, his followers. These are the ones who are weary and burdened because they know they cannot save themselves. They are overwhelmed by

life and know that by all standards of human goodness, they do not qualify
for God’s realm. But Jesus invites especially them. And to those who accept his invitation, he makes a promise: “I will give you rest for your souls.”
This rest is not the absence of activity or work, but rather the grace of forgiveness that assures life and salvation in relation to God. Our burden of
guilt and shame, of despair and hopelessness is removed by his living mercy. This is the good news we receive each Sunday in worship so that we
can share it throughout the week. Don’t miss out invite others.
Mission Strategic Process
We are still in the process of interviewing members of the community to discover their perceptions of the needs of
the community. Once we have collected that data, we will look at ll the information from those interviews and the
cottage meetings to discern where the
Holy Spirit may be leading us as a congregation looking to the future. Please
keep our congregation in your prayers.

Our sister in Christ, Nancy
M. Gentzler, entered the
Church Triumphant on Friday, JULY 15, 2016. She
was the wife of the late
Philip E. Gentzler, and mother to Kathy
and Karen.
Brookline Masonry Contractors has begun the work to restore the masonry on the
front of the building. We need to raise $150,000 for this project over and above
our current operating needs. Gifts designated for this project will go into the
Church Renewal Fund; special envelopes for this purpose are in the back of the
church. Regular Envelope gifts for “Mortgage” will go toward this project. In addition, undesignated special gifts coming to the church will be put toward this project.

Our church has embarked on a process to determine directions and priorities for the future. This process,
“Called Forward Together in Christ”,
involves listening to people, discerning
places where there is shared vision,
and determining how that shared vision might shape an action plan. To
find out more and to participate in the
conversation, please go to
