Urban Farms Trip Brings Insight to Conservation
This summer, TRIO SSS students and staff
had the opportunity to go to Rid-All Green
Partnership’s Urban Farm in the Kinsman
neighborhood of Cleveland. The group toured
the farm and learned about the conservation
and sustainability efforts of the Rid-All program,
which include providing locally grown fruits,
vegetables and fish to city restaurants. In
return, the restaurants send unused and
expired produce back to the farms to be used
as compost. The group then had lunch at
2
Bridgeport Café, just one of the restaurants
that gets its ingredients from the Rid-All Urban
Farm. TRIO SSS students and staff also had
the opportunity to tour Cleveland’s International
Village Community Gardens. Here they learned
about one neighborhood’s efforts to grow
produce and meat products that are freely
distributed to more than 75 local families who
might not have the means to purchase them on
their own.

Financial Aid Updates for the New School Year
It’s time to do your FAFSA for next year. That’s right – the 2017-2018 FAFSA opened on Oct. 1!
How, you ask, can I do my FAFSA so early? Don’t I have to wait until my taxes are done? What good
questions! Here are the answers.
Even though the Federal Financial Aid Application has opened three months earlier than in the past,
you can use your prior tax year information to complete the FAFSA. For the 2017-2018 school year,
you can use your tax information from 2015, the tax return that you filed this past spring – the
one you used for this year’s (2016-2017) FAFSA. Got it? Don’t wait for your 2016 income and tax
information. You can fill out the FAFSA now! It’s called “Early FAFSA.”
Here’s a handy chart:
IF YOU PLAN TO

July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018

October 1, 2016 – June 30, 2018
2015
This change was made because the U.S. Department of Education believes Early FAFSA will make the application process
easier for low- and middle-income students who need federal aid to pay for college. However, be aware that in response, some
colleges are moving up their priority aid deadlines. For example, The University of Akron’s priority FAFSA filing date is moving
up from March 1 to Dec. 1.
Tri-C has not made any decision to move up its priority FAFSA filing date, but the bottom line is that you do not want to wait
to do your FAFSA. As you know, the earlier you get it in, the earlier the financial aid office can process your FAFSA. Early
processing means that if financial aid requires any clarification or further information from you, you can comply in a timely
manner. Also, early processing may help you receive aid that’s given out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Remember: FAFSA Early File – do your FAFSA now!!!

Fall 2016 Updates
Autumn ushers in a host of beautiful oranges, yellows, reds and greens across
the landscape of our communities, and it happens to be my favorite time of year!
Tri-C West is no different; our campus is transitioning from the relaxed summer flow to the hustle and
bustle of autumn. Our campus has taken on the colorful life of the foliage, cool temperatures and the
comfort of settling back into the flow of campus life!
There is something about this time of year that encourages a new spirit, new harvest and the
burgeoning of a new outlook on life as we prepare for a new season – a new season in our academic
and personal lives! As we enjoy all that this new season has to offer, we welcome in a new season of
classes, instructors, group projects, tutoring sessions and more. We also
extend a heartfelt welcome to Mr. Dorsey Faught, the newest addition to the TRIO SSS West
Tutoring Team, specializing in Math and Science.
We have created a host of new workshops this semester to help you remain successful in your
academic pursuits. Be sure to register early in T105 or T106!

TRIO Student Takes the Stage

(Left to Right) Jose Veliz, Audra Jones (English/IT tutor),
Ja’Rod Rogers
Trio student, JOSE VELIZ, performed in the Tri-C
production of To Kill a Mocking Bird, written by Harper
Lee, adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel, and
directed by Bob Ellis.
This classic story is set in 1935, with Scout and her
brother, Jem, being raised by their widowed father,
Atticus, and a strong-willed housekeeper named
Calpurnia. Rising tensions in the community lead Scout
to question the cause. She learns from her father that
the tensions stem from his legal defense of a young
Negro wrongfully accused of a grave crime. This play
6
explores the racial tensions of the early 20th century
South and applauds the strength of those who fight
injustice. (playhousesquare.com)
Jose starred in this classic, demonstrating his
exceptional talent and ability to wow the audience with
each scene. The production was outstanding and welladapted for the stage. Jose and his colleagues did an
excellent job with the acting, singing and performances
both at Tri-C’s Western Campus Theatre and as
they graced the stage of one of the top performing
complexes in the country – Playhouse Square!

College Campus Visits
TRIO students were able to experience three college campus visits this semester. Our first
visit was to Kent State University. We toured Kent State’s beautiful campus, learning about
the school’s history. The Student Union’s lunch options were tried and approved. The perennial
favorite, Cleveland State University, was seen this past October. The day began with lunch at
Chili’s in the CSU food court. Transfer options and membership in CSU’s TRIO program were
discussed. Our final campus
visit was to the HBCU, Central
State University. Students
were introduced to campus life and then split up to
investigate their majors of interest. The tour ended with
lunch and a Marauders football game.
