The Nittany Lions have not always had winning records, but Penn State is always recognized for its long tradition of lacrosse. The first team was organized by a Swarthmore transfer student Walter S. Farley. Through his efforts, the first game was played against Pennsylvania on May 24, 1913. The debut was successful as the Lions won, 4-3. They finished the season with a 3-3 tie against the Bronx Lacrosse Club. With its start in 1913, lacrosse is one of the oldest continuous sports at Penn State. Twelve coaches have guided the lacrosse program. The only season that Penn State failed to field a team was in 1918, when an influenza epidemic swept the nation. In those 84 seasons, Penn State has compiled a 366-396-8 record. While Penn State initially played as an independent, they became active members of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse League in 1922. In 1926, Penn State became a charter member of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, the current organization governing collegiate lacrosse. Eighty one of these players have won All-America honors 106 times and 52 have played in the North-South All-Star game. Three Penn Staters, Tom Hayes and the late Nick Thiel and Harry Wilson, are enshrined in the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Dick Pencek Although six coaches preceded him, the coach who probably did the most for Penn State lacrosse and the game itself was Nick Thiel continued active leadership in the game of lacrosse as long-time secretarytreasurer of the USILA. Thiel coached such Penn State standouts as George Ritter (the Lions' only first team All-American), and Bart Buser in the early years. During the late 40s, a heyday in Penn State athletics because of the influx of veterans following World War II, John Nolan hit the field for the Nittany Lions. Al Fulton and 1957 national scoring leader Bill Hess were both on Thiel's squads in the early 50s. As was the case with most Lion lacrosse coaches, every year was a rebuilding year because of the novices who played on Penn State's teams. Thiel received the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association "Man-of-the-Year" award in 1945 and 1947 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1966. When appointed in 1962, Dick Pencek was the youngest head coach in the nation. He guided the Lions in 1962, departed for the military, and returned to coach from 1965-77, compiling a record of 70-68-2. Along with his winning record, he built the program into a contender on the national scene, challenging for the NCAA Tournament in 1975 and 1976. Pencek began the recruiting of talented high school players, a practice continued under his successor, Glenn F. Thiel, son of Nick Thiel, former coach. Glenn Thiel led Virginia to the 1972 NCAA title and a share of the 1970 USILA national championship, before returning to his alma mater in 1978. With increased administrative support, Penn State lacrosse is now on the national scene as is reflected in the increase in recruiting grant in aids, and scheduling to include Massachusetts, Georgetown, Virginia, Notre Dame and Ohio State. In the spring of 2000, Penn State began play in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Lacrosse League. Charter members of the ECAC include Georgetown, Massachusetts, Rutgers, Navy, UMBC, Stony Brook and Penn State. Each year, the league champion, determined by regular season head-tohead competition, receives an automatic bid into the N C A A Nick Thiel Tournament. PENN STATE LACROSSE In 2005, the ECAC added new members Hobart College, Loyola College (Md.) and St. Johns University to the league. The Fairfield Stags will join the conference in 2006. In 2005, six Nittany Lions earned ECAC Player of the Week honors and junior Nate Whitaker and graduated senior Matt O’Malley both were named to the ECAC first team all-league list. O’Malley and graduated senior Brian Mabry participated in the 64th Annual North-South All-Star game, which marked the fourth straight year that a Nittany Lion has participated in the game. Last year, Will Jones earned Honorable Mention All-America laurels, head coach Glenn Thiel was named ECAC Coach of the Year and Patrick Heim, Jesse Tarr and Nate Whitaker all earned all-conference laurels. Penn State claimed a share of the ECAC regular season title and earned its second trip to the NCAA Championships in the last three years. FRIENDS OF PENN STATE LACROSSE The Friends of Penn State lacrosse is a group of friends, alumni and family organized to support the Penn State Nittany Lions since 1994. For more information, call the lacrosse office at (814) 863-7476 or e-mail Glenn Thiel at [email protected]. www.GoPSUspor ts.com Many of the players during the early years had never played or seen the game before their arrival on campus. Most were athletes from other sports, students from interclass lacrosse competition or just students who were good athletes who wanted to participate in intercollegiate athletics. Thiel, Penn State's coach from 1935-56. Despite a 22-year record of 87-110, Thiel was regarded as a great teacher and coach. 6 ALL-TIME YEAR-BY-YEAR RESULTS 1913: 1-0-1 Head Coach: Walter Farley Pennsylvania May 24 Bronx Lacrosse Club 4-3 3-3 W T 1914: 2-3 Head Coach: Walter Farley Baltimore City Coll.
