Ladybug Picture Book Award Voting
The Ladybug Picture Book Award is designed to promote early literacy
and honor the best in recent children's picture books. A committee of
children's librarians from around the state selects 10 picture book titles
early in the year. Then, during November, New Hampshire children from
preschoolers to those in third grade choose the award winner. The
winning picture book is announced at the end of the year. This year’s list is
available on the library website or vote in the children’s room.
Minecraft IRL
Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build
anything you can imagine. Minecraft IRL brings
some of the fun into real life. We’ll be crafting
swords, playing games, synthesizing elements and
more!

The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid
Now a major motion picture
Short-listed for the Man Booker Prize
New York Times bestseller
“Extreme times call for extreme reactions,
extreme writing. Hamid has done something
extraordinary with this novel.” —Washington Post
At a café table in Lahore, a bearded Pakistani man converses with an
uneasy American stranger. As dusk deepens to night, he begins the
tale that has brought them to this fateful encounter . . .
Changez is living an immigrant’s dream of America. At the top of his
class at Princeton, he is snapped up by an elite valuation firm. He
thrives on the energy of New York, and his budding romance with
elegant, beautiful Erica promises entry into Manhattan society at the
same exalted level once occupied by his own family back in Lahore.
But in the wake of September 11, Changez finds his position in his
adopted city suddenly overturned, and his relationship with Erica
shifting. And Changez’s own identity is in seismic shift as well,
unearthing allegiances more fundamental than money, power, and
maybe even love.

National Novel Writing Month and NH Writers’ Week
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-yourpants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants
begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by
11:59 PM on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a
deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about
writing a novel. Find more details at http://nanowrimo.org/
The 2nd annual Writers' Week (November 8-13) is a time to celebrate
all things regarding writing in New Hampshire. From seminars for
aspiring authors and poets, to readings and events with the state's
accomplished writers, there is plenty for readers and writers alike. Find
more details at http://ow.ly/TAIJZ.
Libraries need Friends
– It’s just that simple. In fact,
across America many public
libraries were established
through the efforts of
community members who
understood the value of
libraries to their communities
and also understood that
libraries needed community
support to survive. Did you
know that a criterion for
securing a Carnegie grant
was a demonstrated
commitment by members of
the community to raise
additional funds and support
for a new library? This
concept hasn’t changed
over the course of the past
150 years.
