2017 Team 6 Homework

Helpful Tip – Plan your
H/W for the week. This
helps reduce stress as
you can see it will get
finished if you stick to
your plan.
1.
TEAM 6 HOMEWORK
WEEK 8 – TERM 1 - 2017
WeeKLY SPeLLiNG WoRDS
Please ensure you learn the ten words you selected for spelling this week. Words should come from your
spelling level list, your draft book or reading books, and topic words may also be included. Please record one
sentence for each word. Each sentence must contain AT LEAST 8 words. Proofread your sentences carefully
and ensure they are neatly recorded in your English books. Spelling is due on Friday morning.
Learning Sentence Types – Once you have completed your usual 10 sentences, you need to practise the two
sentence types Mr Leiataua introduced on Monday (‘Em-Dash’ and ‘Adverb Start’). Please create FIVE
examples of each type and record them in your homework book or in a google doc.
2. ReaDiNG
Independent Reading – please read for 30 minutes each night. Remember to have a chapter book organised as
part of your independent reading programme. To improve your reading fluency and comprehension, one
important tool is to increase your reading mileage (increase the amount of independent reading you do).
3.
WRiTTeN LaNGuaGe – iDioMS
In order to understand a language, you must know what the idioms in that language mean. An idiom is like a
saying. You have to know its ‘hidden’ meaning.
Choose two of the idioms in the box.
‘Rats abandoning a sinking ship’
a) For each one, write an explanation of what they mean.
Read between the lines’
b) Create your own sentence for each one to show that you
‘Read the riot act’
understand how to use each idiom correctly.
‘Real McCoy’
c) Choose one of your two idioms and draw/create a visual
‘Red-carpet treatment’
representation (a picture) of it.
‘Red herring’
4.
MaTHS
Times Tables practise – remember that your target is 80%+ for each of the basic facts speed tests by the
end of the year. Try to spend at least 5 minutes each day working on your areas of weakness.
5. LaNGuaGeS
Please make sure you are revising the vocab you have learned so far and that any homework tasks are
completed ready for your next Languages session.
6. iNQUiRY – ReSeaRCH TaSK
The marking scheme will be out of 20 and it will have to be handed in and presented on Friday of Week 10.
Please work out a timetable for completing this task so you don’t try to cram in the work in at the last minute.
Please also make sure that the project is in your own words and has not been copied from the internet. You
may present the project as you please (on a board, powerpoint, word) as long as you hand in a printed copy for
display.
Inventions Project
Inventions help the world go round by providing new and easier ways to do things. Inventions such as the
telephone, electricity and the Internet have changed the human experience in once-unimaginable ways.
Choose one invention that you think has changed the world.
Part 1
1) Talk about the inventor, how he or she came up with the idea, what happened to them afterwards, were they
famous or did no one really discover how amazing their invention was until after their death? Include a
picture of them.
2) Talk about the invention. What is it? What exactly does it do? Did it take lots of tries to make or was it
perfect first time? Include a picture of the invention. It must be labelled.
3) Talk about how the invention changed the world. What has it made easier? You could also talk about any
other inventions that came about as a result of the original invention. For example the invention of the
wheel originally helped carts move, which eventually contributed to the invention of the automobile.
4) Talk about what the world would be like without it. For example if debit cards had never been invented we’d
have to carry around huge amounts of money all
the time. People might have to hire armed guards
so that they didn’t get robbed! Be imaginative.
Make a comic strip or storyboard showing the
problems the world would face without the
invention. Think outside the box!
5) How did the inventor market his/her idea? Were
there adverts? Did they trademark or patent
the idea? Was this difficult? Try to include an
example of one advert if you can.

Maureen's Story Starter
The school caretaker looked at the remains of his storage shed. “What a mess.” He shook his head. Scientists
were calling it a localised earthquake. There was the heap of rubble in front of him.
Very localised, he thought. Just his shed.
The principal patted his arm. “I’m sorry. The insurance company is calling it an Act of God so they won’t pay out
any money to help us rebuild it.”
“All my tools were in there,” the caretaker sighed. “The school tractor is under there and the mower.... All the
paint and the pool chemicals are in there too....”
There was a slight shifting in the bricks and dirt then a slide of debris cascaded down.
The principal backed away quickly.
The caretaker stared in horror. “Oh no! I forgot I left....”
