Major Concepts In Biology
What you SHOULD have learned
from BIO I!!
There are 7 characteristics
that define living things:
• 1.) Living things are composed of Cells
• 2.) Living things are highly organized
• 3.) Living things respond to their environment
through stimuli
• 4.) Living things reproduce
• 5.) Living things grow and develop through
metabolism
• 6.) Living things adapt over time through
evolution
• 7.) Living things use energy for growth and
maintenance
From Genetics:
• The patterns of inheritance are
fundamental to all living things
as seen through Mendelian
Genetics.
From Evolution:
• Charles Darwin’s theory of
Evolution is the current
theory being used to
explain the origin of life
on Earth and the diversity
of life forms.
From Classification:
• Living things are classified and
sorted into groups for our
organizational benefit.
From The Nature of Science:
• The Scientific Method is
applied to solve a problem
through experimentation.
From the Nature of Science:
• Controlled experiments contain a
control sample, which goes
through all of the experimental
steps except that it is not
subjected to the experimental
variable. This is done for
comparison purposes in order to
help validate the experimental
results.
From Ecology:
• All organisms interact with other
organisms that are both similar to
and different from themselves.
Organisms also interact with the
living and non-living factors of the
environments in which they live.
From Evolution:
•Life comes only from
life = BIOGENESIS.
From Cells
• The cell is the basic unit of life
capable of carrying out all of the
functions of living things.
From “Spiderman”:
• With great power (knowledge) comes
great responsibility.
