Computer Assignment #1
Math 159
Make sure that you use the correct Excel document for this assignment. You will not
receive credit if you use the wrong data.
1. (25 pts) Open your Excel workbook for this assignment and work with the sample of
ages in the first spreadsheet.
a. Use Excel to construct a frequency distribution for the ages, and fill in the results
below. Use the values shown in the spreadsheet for the first lower class limit and the
class width. (Be sure to write the actual classes on this sheet, not just the "bins".)
Age
Frequency
b. Use Excel to create the histogram for the distribution in part (a).
Edit the title of the histogram to have YOUR full name in it (as an example, I would
put "Rob Smedfjeld's Histogram").
Other edits you should be sure to include:
• re-size the graph so that the bars are fully visible
• do not include the legend on the right side
• use an appropriate title for the x-axis
• remove the "More" category
• change the gap width between the bars to 0
• change the labels on the x-axis to be the class midpoints, and adjust the tick
marks so that they are centered below each bar
c. What is the statistical term to describe the shape of this distribution?
(continued on back)
2. (10 pts) The second spreadsheet in your Excel workbook for this assignment shows a
frequency table for a bag of M&M’s.
a. Use Excel to create a Pareto chart for the M&M colors. Edits to include in the graph:
• edit the title of the chart to include your full name
• do not include the legend on the right side
• change the gap width between the bars to be 50%
b. Use Excel to create a pie graph for the M&M colors. Edits to include in the graph:
• edit the title of the chart to include your full name
• do not include the legend on the right side
• include the data labels and the percents in the graph itself
3. (15 pts) The third spreadsheet in your Excel workbook for this assignment describes a
range of numbers to enter.
a. Use the autofill feature in Excel to enter the described numbers in column A. Then
use appropriate functions in Excel to calculate the mean and standard deviation of the
numbers. If not exact, round your answers to the nearest hundredth.
x A = __________
s A = ___________
b. Use a formula and autofill to take 4 times each of the original numbers in column A
and put these in column B. Find the mean and standard deviation of these numbers,
again rounding answers to€the nearest hundredth if €
not exact.
x B = __________
s B = ___________
What is the numerical relationship between x B and x A ?
€
What is the numerical relationship
between s B and€s A ?
€
€
c. Use a formula and autofill to add 50 to each of the original numbers in column A and
put these in column C. Find the mean
€ and€standard deviation of these numbers, again
rounding answers to the nearest hundredth if not exact.
xC = __________
What is the numerical relationship between xC and x A ?
€
What is the numerical relationship
between sC and€s A ?
€

sC = ___________
