Heritage, Identity, And Peace
The Musical Project of David Broza
By Cantor Elizabeth Sacks • [email protected] • ext. 305
T
his January, Temple Emanuel will welcome Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza
as our fundraiser artist. An exceptional artist and performer, Broza brings a wide
variety of musical styles – “a fusion of the three different countries in which he was raised:
Israel, Spain, and England, filling concert halls with famous guitar playing, ranging from
flamenco-flavored rhythmic and percussive techniques, to whirlwind finger picking, to a
signature rock’n’roll sound.”
Broza’s talent has led him to become a household name in Israel and
has earned him the American title, “the Israeli Bruce Springsteen.” But
throughout his career, Broza has strived to do more with his music, to
consider power of cultural connections across communities – particularly
surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Already in 1977, in what
would become one of his most famous anthems, “Yihyeh Tov,” (Things
Will Get Better), Broza movingly wrote “people live under stress/looking
for a reason to breathe/and between hatred and murder/they talk about
peace… we will yet learn to live together/between the groves of olive
trees/children will live without fear/without borders, without bombshelters/on graves grass will grow/for peace and love, one hundred years
of war/but we have not lost hope. And all will be good....”
In 2014, Broza embarked upon a collaborative album entitled East
Jerusalem, West Jerusalem. Recorded in the Palestinian Sabreen Studio in
East Jerusalem, the project included both Israeli and Palestinian artists
and engineers in an attempt to reduce the personal divisions among
people with common passions. In an interview earlier this year, Broza
affirmed that regardless of political perspective (and the perspectives
ranged extensively), he saw that through the process of recording
the album, “you are actually getting over your fear and all kinds of
misconceptions of what is an enemy, and you build friendships and build
trust and somehow make life more livable. And all this is through music
and song.” By taking pride in his own musical heritage, Broza has been
able create conversations with others who similarly take pride in their
own musical tradition.
To honor the spirit of Broza’s musical project, we will use the weekend as an opportunity to explore
Israeli
music and culture, and how we as Temple Emanuel connect to this important aspect of our
for
Jewish identity. Join us on Friday, January 27, at Shabbat worship for Israeli Music Shabbat – an
David Broza
evening dedicated to some of the Israeli music
in Concert
that has shaped, touched, and continues to
inspire our community; and on Saturday evening,
share in the support of our community as we come
together to experience the profound and multi-faceted
music and poetry of Israeli superstar, David Broza.
May the music and the message of this celebrated
artist expand our understanding of our own musical
heritage, inspire us to reach out to our neighbors in
peace, and remind us that music and song can indeed
be a powerful tool for transformation and redemption.

YOUR
A Celebration of Voices at Temple Emanuel
Friday, February 10, 7:30 p.m.
E
ach year on Shabbat Shirah, we celebrate the power of music and song. Shabbat Shirah –
Shabbat of Song – is named because in the Torah portion for this Shabbat, the Israelites
sing when they finally cross through the Red Sea. At this seminal moment in our people’s
history, the Israelites and the Torah choose music and song to express themselves – a song
of freedom, a song of relief, a song of joy, a song of redemption. This year at Temple we will
celebrate the song of our community – the songs of our musical congregation. Join us as we
spend an evening together singing our favorite melodies and highlighting people of all ages
in our community who love to sing. Come with your voices ready – share with us your song.

Goals for the New Year
Adult Programing News
Steve Stark • [email protected] • ext. 303
Sarah Brown •[email protected] • ext. 305
As Jews, we have the opportunity
to make two sets of New Year’s
resolutions. One commitment always
at the top of my list is to take care of
myself; getting in better shape never
seems to leave the list!
Professionally, my goal is to continue an unwavering
dedication to the mission of Temple. This year, I
will work diligently to make our Congregation a
welcoming place where each of you can explore
your Jewish identity and actively participate in our
community.
It is my hope that my work inspires you to create
personal and spiritual goals of your own. It is also my
hope that your sense of accomplishment is realized
at Temple by engaging in worship, lifelong learning,
the celebration of holidays, rites of passage, and social
justice programs. Truly, my goal is that the efforts
of our entire staff, board of directors, and volunteers
allow you to experience a sense of great fulfillment and
personal growth.
At Temple, we offer meaningful learning
opportunities for both adults and children.
We provide social programming through our youth
groups, Hineini Project for young adults, Kavod on
the Road, concerts, and other special events. Temple
is also committed to social action and communitybuilding, making Temple, the Denver community and
the world a better place. All of this helps us to make
Temple Emanuel a warm and welcoming community
by bringing us together.
We always like to see you here! Please read
the weekly e-notes, the bulletin, our website and
other forms of communication, so that you can
actively participate in these opportunities!
Please make sure that we have your current contact
information, so that you can continue to receive our
information. You can check your information by
going to www.emanueldenver.org (About Us and
then MMonTheWeb) where you can access the secure
Membership Database by logging in. Or call Sura
or Kathy in the office to provide us your updated
information.
May we all accomplish the goals and resolutions we
set for ourselves in the new year. Wishing each of you
a happy, healthy, and a prosperous 2017!

here is something special about
spending time with loved ones. In
doing so, we create countless memories.
Those memories sometimes play an
integral role in creating who we want to
be. Other times, later in life, we will find
ourselves somewhere, or we’ll hear something, or we’ll
smell a familiar scent and instantly be brought back to an
earlier moment in life. For me, when we sing “bim bam”
at the beginning of a Shabbat service, I’m immediately
drawn back to the Senior Center in Great Barrington,
MA – a space that my childhood congregation would use
(we had no physical building of our own). I remember
sitting with my parents flanking me on either side during
our monthly family Shabbat Services. Hearing “bim bam”
puts me back in those seats. In those seats I learned what it
meant to pray together as a family. Some of my earliest, and

Here at Temple Emanuel, we understand how
important it is for us to create powerful, prayerful,
spiritual experiences for our families. We are
committed to creating a space for your family to make
long-lasting Jewish memories with one another. On

we invite you to join us for a prayer experience that is
aimed at your entire family. We’ll save you a seat!

Drug Addiction, also called substance use disorder, is a dependence on a legal or illegal drug or medication. Alcohol and nicotine
are legal substances, but are also considered drugs.
On Wednesday, April 5 Temple Emanuel and Temple Sinai will provide a panel presentation to address the issues of addiction that
are plaguing our country and many of our families. The program will be held at Temple Sinai from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Please watch for program information in the Temple Emanuel ENotes.

Join us in a community-wide day of service. There is a project for everyone from making

t is with great pleasure that we announce a
major change in our ECC. Moving forward,
Temple Emanuel’s ECC will be named The Rabbi
Steven Foster Early Learning Center. In 1971,
Rabbi Foster started the ECC here and generations
of families have benefited from his vision. We are
honored to have our school bear his name and legacy.
Our new tagline for the ECC is “Where Discovery Meets
Community.” One of the ways we want to build community is
for our parents. We are creating different opportunities for adults
to come together by developing chavurot for parents in regards
to early childhood development. In January we will host a game
night for adults at Temple Emanuel. Building community is an
integral part of our mission here at Emanuel ECC.
t was a busy fall at Shwayder Camp. After our
2016 summer season we took advantage of our
awesome fall weather and were able to accomplish
so much of our building project.
For the 2017 summer we will have 8 new camper
cabins, SIT cabins, a basketball court with bleacher
seating, a barn, Director's cabin, and an updated dining hall (which
will include an indoor fireplace), with more to come for the 2018
season.
You can help keep the Shwayder Magic alive and become part of
the capital campaign by making a donation to help us reach our goal
of $5 million. To make a donation go to www.shwayder.com/donate/

In February, we will celebrate Tu B’Shevat by investigating trees
and the abundance of gifts they provide as well as looking at the
holiday that has become a tree-planting festival in Israel. Through
our study of trees, we will explore the natural world and reflect
upon the Jewish Lens of Tikkun Olam – Repair and Responsibility
for the World.
Shwayder Goes to the Stock Show!
Join us for Jewish Camp Day at the National Western Stock Show
Thursday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m.

T
he Annual Brotherhood Temple Blood Drive is Sunday, February 26
at 9:00 a.m.! We will be contacting previous donors to see if they can
donate again this year. If you have any questions, you can contact our blood
drive coordinator, Andy Thangasamy at [email protected].
For students attending their freshman or sophomore year of college in the
fall of 2017 the Brotherhood has a scholarship fund to help offset some costs.
This fund can also be used if a student is attending a trade school. You can find more details
on the Brotherhood Web Page at http://www.emanueldenver.org/programs/brotherhood.
We have exciting Brotherhoods Bagels and Lox breakfasts coming up. More information will be coming via
email. These informative and enjoyable events occur on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. We would love to have you join us!
Finally, I am excited about a change in leadership within the Brotherhood. Will Trachman will be stepping
up to be our President in March. I will still remain on the board as the Vice President and we will all be working
together to support the Temple through various programs and activities. Marty Morris will remain Treasurer and
Bruce Baer will replace Will as Secretary.
