More Skills 11 Type Text in the Outline Pane

The Slides/Outline pane consists of two tabs—the Slides tab and the Outline tab.
䉴
The Outline tab displays only the text on each slide.
䉴
Use the Outline tab if you find it easier to enter presentation text similar to the way that you
would create an outline in a word processor.
To complete this presentation, you will need the following file:
䊏 p01_Outline
You will save your presentation as:
䊏 p01_Outline_Your_Name

Start PowerPoint. Locate and open the file p01_Outline. Save the file in your PowerPoint
Chapter 1 folder as p01_Outline_Your_Name

In the Slides/Outline pane, click the Outline tab to display the presentation outline as
shown in Figure 1.
The Outline tab is wider than the Slides tab, providing additional space to type your
text. The Slide titles display in bold on the same line as the slide icons.

In the Outline tab, on Slide 2, drag to select the third and fourth bullet points—
Probationary period and Evaluations, as shown in Figure 2.
When you select or edit text in the outline, the slide that you are editing displays in the
Slides pane.

On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Increase List Level button

In the Outline tab, click at the end of the last bullet point—Career options. Press J to create a new bullet point at the same list level as Career options, and then press F to create a
second-level bullet point. Type Transfer and promotion
When you type text in the outline or change the list level, the changes display in the
Slides pane.

Press J to create a new bullet point at the same level as Transfer and promotion, and then
on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Decrease List Level button
to format the new bullet at the same list level as Career options.

On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the Decrease List Level button
and notice that a new Slide 3 is created as shown in Figure 3.

When the insertion point is positioned in the highest level bullet point, a new slide is
created when the Decrease List Level button is clicked.

Because the insertion point was positioned in the slide title, pressing J results in a
new slide.

Press F to increase the list level and create a bullet point on Slide 3. Type the following
three bullet points, pressing J after the first two. It is not necessary to press J after the
last bullet point.

On the Insert tab, in the Text group, click the Header & Footer button, and then click the
Notes and Handouts tab. Under Include on page, click the Date and time check box, and
then click Update automatically. Select the Page number check box. Click Footer, and then
in the Footer box, type p01_Outline_Your_Name and click Apply to All.

On the Office menu , point to Print, and then click Print Preview. Click the Print What
arrow, and then click Outline View to display the outline. Click the Close Print Preview
button.

Save the presentation. Print your presentation or submit it electronically as directed by
your instructor.
