Volume 34 Issue 9 September 2014 www.cosmoindustries.com MACHINEX UPGRADES AT COSMO What is a MRF? It’s an abbreviation for ‘Material Recycling Facility’, and it’s pronounced ‘murf’. Cosmo’s MRF is being upgraded to accept a wide variety of materials for the Multi -Unit Residence Recycling (MURR) program. As you can see from the pictures, there is quite a difference in our facility already. Height is an important element for sorting and storing numerous recyclables. As tin cans, plastic bottles, milk jugs and newspapers move their way from one conveyor belt to another, they are either sorted into a large storage hopper (bin) or moved along to the next sorting station. Eventually each material will make its way toward the baler where wire binds the bales together for shipment. While the guys from Machinex are doing our upgrades, our participants are busy delivering brochures to Multi-Unit properties. Poster and brochure deliveries began in New construction the South East section of the city in mid-September and will continue throughout the city. Brochure delivery was brisk, and lots of fun, when the weather turned warm again. It’s great to see all of the parts of this project coming together. It is also heartening to see the cooperation between neighbouring Multi-Unit sites in freeing up space for a recycling bin. Bin deliveries to residences are scheduled to begin the week of October 6th. Once delivery dates are set, they will be posted on Cosmo’s web site and the city website, saskatoonrecycles.ca. Make sure to look for next month’s MURR update. Congratulations toWendell Wilkie who was the proud winner of last month’s TeleMiracle Roughrider basket! David was known by many over the years, for his great sense of humour, and contagious laughter. Although David was non-verbal, he followed along with conversations and always caught the punch lines. David was a great teacher in instructing each of us to not sweat the small stuff. During his time in Life Skills, David was so easy going and loved to take part in many group activities that included looking at magazines and picture cards, story time, action movies and armchair travel televised programs, baking, snoezelen, and taking on a role in recycling. David always enjoyed quality of life events at work that involved diversity and would be very attentive to learning about the world around him. David would often be captivated by the scenery around him, and one would often see a big photogenic smile. Outside of work David would often look forward to Christmas time, which was around the time of year he would take part in the Secret Santa event with his friends and staff from work. David, during this time, would have a chance to visit and view various plays at the Barn Playhouse, Christmas Concerts at Elim Tabernacle Church, and would be smiling and sharing in the Christmas spirit over a Christmas dinner. David will dearly be missed by many of us who had the opportunity to know this man who had such an infectious laugh. Calendar of Events Cosmo will be closed on Mon. Oct 13th for Thanksgiving Galon Haunted House for Cosmo’s Family & Friends— Thurs. Oct. 30th from 1-4 pm Halloween Dance for participants only— Fri. Oct. 31st EXPLORING THE CANADIAN CULTURE AT COSMO The Language Instruction to Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program has resumed classes and Cosmo will be welcoming students on a weekly basis during the school year. Students are asked to volunteer with an organization where he or she may be exposed to the Canadian culture and have the opportunity to practice their English speaking skills. Students benefit from volunteering with us as they have ample opportunities to interact with participants, staff and other volunteers. Students come to us with different backgrounds, skills and talents that can be shared in groups, one on one, and in a large group setting. Not only are we excited for the students to be part of Cosmo, but we are eager to learn about their cultures and backgrounds. Welcome LINC students! Chantal Gosselin Coordinator of Volunteer Services WELCOMING NURSES IN TRAINING Cosmo has partnered with the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN) program to host ten of their nursing students to complete 40 servicelearning hours. The ten students will be placed throughout the areas of Cosmo to gain perspective and experience of working with adults with intellectual disabilities. Students can benefit from their time spent at Cosmo by learning with our participants and can create memories to last a lifetime. Cosmo will host the students on a weekly basis until the beginning of December. We would like to welcome all ten students and hope we can provide them with a wealth of knowledge to apply in their field of study. Chantal Gosselin Coordinator of Volunteer Services CONTRACTS WINDING DOWN AFTER A GREAT SUMMER On August 27th, the Contracts division had a great turn-out for our Payday Activity. We had a very tasty barbeque lunch that consisted of hamburgers, macaroni salad and watermelon. All of the participants thoroughly enjoyed the feast and many thanks to our wonderful chef, Tracey Janzen, and all the staff who all made the day a great success. The weather was beautiful, so it made everything seem so much more like a great ending to summer. After the barbeque, most of the participants were able to take part in a movie day to top it all off. Heather Reis Contracts Division A NIGHT AT THE RACES! Calvin Gessel, Lyle Brash, Terry Boulding, Tyrone Depeel and staff members Spencer and Sheri, all enjoyed dinner at Smiley’s and a night of thoroughbred racing at Marquis Downs on Saturday August 23. The meal was unanimously voted as awesome and despite it being a chilly evening, everyone had a blast. We warmed up the pre- races with a hot beverage at Tim Horton’s and sat high on the bleachers under the canopy where it was the warmest. Lyle spent two of his own dollars on a bet to win; sadly his horse came in fourth! The guys were happy to be able to pick out a Marquis Downs tee- shirt to commemorate their evening of fun. We had a lot of laughs and it was a tired bunch that made their way home by 10 pm! Thank you to Top of the Rock for making this night possible!
