Thank you. Dear Parents and Friends I am delighted to inform you that for a third year running, our Young Consumers Team has reached the Welsh Finals in Cardiff. This competition is designed to make young people aware of their rights and responsibilities and gives them essential life skills as they prepare for the world of work. Congratulations must also go to the Key Stage Four Gymnastics team who won the Urdd Welsh National Finals this week, an excellent effort. I would like to wish our Debate Team the very best of luck as they are travelling to Cardiff on the 3rd March to compete in the Welsh Finals of the English Speaking Union Competition. Thank you to all staff for supporting a great range of extra-curricular activities. On Thursday, Careers Wales joined Year 11 in a presentation on the common application process that Flintshire are piloting. This allows pupils to apply online, through the Careers Wales website, to any sixth form or college. If pupils have already submitted their applications they do not need to complete the online version too. It was good to see that so many of our Year 11s have offers already. If there are any pupils who are still unsure about their post-16 options, please contact Mr Shaw (Learning Manager). I also introduced the Year 11 revision programme, I have sent a letter to all Year 11 parents/carers with details of the programme and a list of the documents and information Year 11 pupils have been given. With only eight school weeks left, our Year 11 pupils need to be fully engaged with their studies and the mentoring programme. NEXT NON-UNIFORM DAY – FRIDAY 7 MARCH 2014 Thank you Heads of Houses Argoeds trip to Daresbury Laboratory On February 13th, year 10 pupils studying single sciences were privileged to experience a school trip to one of the four UK Science Technology Facilities Council sites: Daresbury Laboratory. Our day began with an hour long lecture on ‘The Strange Case of the Universe’ from one of the laboratories scientist’s.His aim was to open our minds to the world of science; and educate us of the endless possibilities that science entails in terms of career choice and our future. The talk focused on three theory’s about how the world evolved; the big bang theory; the big bounce theory; and the lecturer’s own theory. We then had an opportunity to ask any questions; whether it be about the talk itself, or more direct questions about him, i.e. How and why he became a scientist. We left the lecture fascinated and truly inspired. We were then introduced to a team from Techniquest, who educated us on the relationship between electricity and magnets. As to investigate this topic further, we dispersed into small groups and completed three experiments. We enjoyed doing the hands-on activities as it helped us understand the theory’s techniquest were explaining to us!After a short lunch break, we had a tour of the LHC exhibit- this was a chance to see a life size cross section of the LHC tunnel together, and the scientist who gave us the lecture earlier talked to us about the latest discoveries and where the LHC will take us next. We were eager to ask many questions and again, he was happy to answer them. The final part of our day included the opportunity to look at astrophysical models, and learn astonishing facts about physics’ huge affect on modern day life; many of us were particularly surprised to learn that wifi was found whilst astrologists were exploring black holes! Regrettably, this was the last stop of our enthralling tour around Daresbury Laboratory. We left with newly-opened minds and broadened knowledge of the sciences, and agreed that another trip to the laboratory would be highly favourable by us all. SPORTS SUCCESSES OF THE TERM! Football Well done to the year 7 football team who have been training hard all term and won their tournament recently.
