Blake’s Outsiders
Saturday 13th February to Saturday 14th May
Outsider Art comes to Worthing with the combined
talents and ideas of a number of contemporary artists all
celebrating the work of William Blake:
“In his old age, Blake’s revolutionary views made him
an outsider. A republican and an anarchist, he could
hardly feel at home in Tory England.”
William Blake Visionary Anarchist by Peter Marshall
The following artists present works that are their own
visions and interpretations on being an ‘outsider’ at this
time in history. We welcome Christine Binnie, Jennifer
Binnie, Karen Constance ,Damian Le Bas, Delaine Le
Bas, Cathy Lomax, Amanda Cubillio Milligan, Alex Michon,
Jason Williams, Marcus P Ripley, Philip Osborne and James
Coleman.
Please see our website or ask museum staff about the
programme of music, performance and film related events.

Exhibition Live

documented live by Northbrook students.

Landing exhibition space
As part of Worthing WOW 2016 Worthing
Museum will proudly host an exhibition of film
equipment from the early days of film-making
and film screening. In 1896 film was shown
for the first time in Sussex, one of the
earliest screenings taking place on
Worthing pier, and so it is that we
are celebrating 120 years of
film, with events, exhibitions
and workshops taking
place in both Shoreham
and Worthing. Many
thanks to Heritage Lottery
Fund for supporting
Storytelling on Film: 120
years of film in Sussex.

Neolithic Worthing
Saturday 9th April | 10.30am-12.30pm | £10 | Talk
Join our resident archaeologist James for a series of talks on the archaeology and
history of the local area in April 2016. Back by popular demand! The series begins with a return to the nationally
significant flint mines of the Worthing Downs. Excavated using red deer antlers and
by hand, hundreds of mines were sunk into the chalk in the search for valuable flint
to make into beautiful tools. Aurochs, bears and wolves still roamed the wooded
landscape, whilst the inhabitants began to farm the soil for the first time. We will
also look at the investigations undertaken over a 40 year career by the great local
archaeologist John Pull, with the chance to handle dozens of beautiful flint tools
from the area. Refreshments included.
Sussex in the Iron Age
Saturday 23rd April
10.30am-12.30pm | £10 | Talk
The second talk in the series will focus
on the Iron Age in the Worthing area
and Sussex. This was a time when the
great hill forts were constructed and
tribal confederacies began to form
across the land. We will look at the
transition from the age of Bronze into
the age of Iron, the significant cultural
changes over the period, through the
migrations of the Belgae and finishing
with investigating the relationship
between the people in Sussex and the
Roman Empire across the channel.
Wonderful objects from the period will
be available for handling after the talk.
Refreshments included.
Roman Sussex
Saturday 30th April | 10.30am-15.00pm | £25 | Talk
ROMAN DAY! The third talk in the series will focus
on the Roman period in the Worthing area and
Sussex. Our resident archaeologist James
will conduct a talk and object handling
session on the broader archaeological
and historical changes throughout the
period, with particular focus on the villas
and settlements in the local area. After
lunch we have a special talk conducted
by Rob Wallace, Director of the Culver
Project, who will discuss the fantastic
Roman landscape he has revealed north
of Lewes, including a recently discovered
Roman town and the Barcombe villa. Lunch and
refreshments included.
Adult Workshops & Talks
The Wartime Defence of Sussex
Saturday 6th August | 10.30am-12.30pm | £10 | Talk
Join our resident archaeologist and
historian James for an in-depth look at
the defences of Sussex during WWII.
Sussex was on the frontline during the
Battle of Britain – if the RAF had failed
and the Wehrmacht had invaded, the
area would have been of major strategic
importance to both sides. We will look at
the defences themselves - the pillboxes,
anti-tank ditches and heavy guns sited on
the Downs, along with aerial photographs
taken by the Luftwaffe whilst planning
their invasion. Eye-witness accounts from
the period will form a part of the talk,
and there will be a selection of objects to
handle, much of which has been found
on the Downs left over from the military
training exercises of the time.
Refreshments included.
History of Sportwear
Saturday 18th June | 10:30am-12noon
£10 | Talk
In the spirt of this years 2016 Olympics we
are exploring the history of sportswear with
an illustrative talk led by Suzanne Rowland.
Refreshments included.
Duo Brush Ink Pens for all
abilities
Saturday 2nd July | 10:30am-12.30pm
£7.50 plus £2.50 materials | Workshop
Explore sketching with a duo ended brush
ink pen. Learn techniques and sketch
artefacts from the Museum collection.
Fashion of the 1920’s and 1930’s
Saturday 17th September | 10:30am-12noon | £10 | Talk

back at 1920’s to 1930’s fashions. Refreshments included.
