Elementary Schools Keeping You Posted March 2011 READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY March 2, 2011 Grab your hat and read with the Cat — it’s a nationwide celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday! Now in its thirteenth year, the National Education Association’s annual event brings children from around the country into the world of books and sharing their love of reading. Many of our schools will be joining the celebration with special activities. Read Across America Day is a call for every child to be reading in the company of a caring adult on March 2. More information about Read Across America Day may be found at www. nea.org. You and your children can also visit www.seussville.com for a full set of dynamic resources, tips, and interactive games and activities, featuring, of course, the fun-filled themes from Dr. Seuss’ books. Governor Kitzhaber has proposed a $5.56 billion biennial budget for K-12 schools statewide. For the Hillsboro School District, this translates to reducing current budget levels by more than $23 million in the 2011-12 school year. Have a slice of pie, eat a pizza pie, create more Pi puns, and participate in Pi-related activities, all to celebrate that special number π (3.14…) on 3/14. As the symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, π represents a number that continues infinitely without repeating digits and has been calculated, using supercomputers, to more than 1 trillion digits past the decimal. From the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to modern-day mathematicians, no other number has captured humankind’s fascination and attention quite like π. Did you know Pi Day is also the birthday of Albert Einstein, one of history’s most revolutionary physicists? Pi Day has become an international holiday, with special events held around the world. Join in the math fun by visiting the San Francisco Exploratorium’s site at www.exploratium.edu/pi or check with your school for any upcoming activities. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR 2011-12 IS NOW OPEN District elementary schools started accepting registrations on February 22 for children who will be entering kindergarten in the upcoming 2011-12 school year. If you have not already done so, please register your kindergartner at your assigned school of residence as soon as possible. This ensures that you will be notified of back-toschool information and that your child’s classroom orientation and assessment can be scheduled before the first day of school. Do not wait until the end of summer or the first day of school. Even if you are considering a transfer to another school or district, you must first register your child at your school of residence. Transfer applications for kindergartners will be accepted August 1 through August 19, with notifications mailed by August 29.
