Olvar Wood Writers Retreat is de‐
lighted to sponsor the Perilous Adven‐
tures short story competition. As writers ourselves, we understand that the writing life is a perilous adven‐
ture – full of thrills and spills – a jour‐
ney of the mind requiring solitude and courage, as well as talent, dedication and spirited intelligence. We also un‐
derstand that, at times, all writers face hurdles that can seem insurmountable, especially when faced alone. At Olvar Wood, through a range of diverse and flexible services, we provide guidance, support, advice, companionship and comfort for writers struggling to meet the daily challenges of the writing life. Submissions of short stories up to
5000 words are now invited for
the 2009Perilous Adventures
Short Story Competition.
Stories may be in any genre: from
the weird to the wacky, the sassy to
the sublime. Speculative, serious,
criminal or romantic, realist or
reactionary, we look forward to
reading a wide range of stories.
We’re looking for stories that combine a riveting story with clear but eloquent prose. Stories
that surprise us, stories that move us. Stories we wish we’d
written ourselves.
Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of
$10.00, payable by cheque, money order or direct deposit.
You may enter as many times as you wish, as long as each
entry is better than the one before.
Entries close August 28, 2009 (that is, your entry must
be postmarked on or before this date).
Announcement of Results: The competition results
will be posted on the Perilous Adventures website on 11
September. If you wish to receive notification of the results by post, please include a stamped, self-addressed
envelope with your entry.
Publication of winning stories: The winning stories
will be published on the Perilous Adventures website on
16 October.

Prizes
The winning story and up to three shortlisted stories
will be published in the Perilous Adventures Magazine,

Each of the prizewinning writers will receive a free
weekend retreat at Olvar Wood. The retreat includes all
tuition, meals and accommodation and will take place
16-18 October 2009.
