Rare crocs
rescued in zoo
FirstNews ISSUE 357 19 - 25 APRIL 2013
TWO dwarf West African crocodiles are
among the animals saved in a ferocious fire
at a zoo in Scotland.
The fire broke out at around 3.50am in the reptile
house at Five Sisters Zoo. Investigators are looking at
whether the heating system was the cause.
Around 50 firefighters and 11 fire engines were
called to battle the blaze.
The pair of rare crocodiles, who lived next to the
reptile house, survived by submerging themselves
underwater and were later rescued.
It is thought that all creatures in the reptile house
died in the fire, including turtles, lizards, geckos,
snakes and iguanas, as well as one of the zoo’s two
otters and two meerkats. Nine other meerkats were
still missing.
Lesley Coupar, spokeswoman for the zoo, said: “It’s
just the worst tragedy.”
